Physics based simulation style sword fighting game taking place in 17th century Poland. Think of a cross between… Bushido Blade, Exanima, & Die by the Sword. Created by one of the main animators for Witcher 3. Really amazing to see an animator translate their ideas about animation into gameplay. I’m sure a lot of animators get frustrated by game design limitations.

This would be a really fun party game if you have a couple controllers! It’s easy to learn, very difficult to master, but it’s very fun and feels authentic through and through.

Blade Symphony

Blade Symphony

Alrighty, its about time edit my review from a long time ago. But first some things I wish to point out.

  • After 900 hours I can be a little biased in favor of this game

  • This is not a game where a person with 1 hour should be reviewing, this game takes much more time to understand and any reviews from these people should be ignored, if you like it or not.

Blade Symphony, released May 7, 2014 by Puny Human Games. This is a game that without a doubt I am addicted too, though idk if that is good or bad, probably bad. From my first day on Blade Symphony spamming with Jian Ryoku, to becoming almost top tier, my journey has been wonderful. I have met tons of people, most of them on my steam friends list and I dont regret anything. Though I feel like im a rare case, for many many players have stopped playing for multiple reasons that ill get too in second.

I have 400 hours aprx. I’ve been with this game for 2 years through thick or thin. This is part review, part history.

tl:dr This isn’t what it used to be. The playerpase is small, but its very tight knit. It’s the kind of community where everyone know’s everyone by name. The gameplay itself is wonky but often fun when you get it right. The learning curve is a brick wall. You’re going to lose a lot when you start. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Almost everyone in master rank would be more than pleased to take you udner their wing, all you have to do is ask.

This game is somewhat of a double-edged sword.

If you have a friend (or enemy) who is in the room with you, this game is great. Otherwise, you probably shouldn’t get it.

The game plays like an elaborate dance; two players fighting for the honour of being consumed by the titular serpent- the Nidhogg. The controls are simple: one button jabs your sword, one button makes you jump. The real beauty is how the mechanics blend together. Swords can be moved up and down to reach a jumping or ducking enemy. Swords at the same height will clash, and can block the opposing player’s attacks. Swords can also be knocked out of a players hand by some particularly crafty swordplay. Jousting with your sword fully raised throws your sword through the air, which is hard to dodge, but leaves you without your best weapon. Thrusting in midair results in a divekick, a techniquie used to relieve the enemy of their weapon (that is, if you don’t impale yourself on their weapon first).

This is a very straightforward party game where you can kill your friends with increasingly large swords and is that not all you want from a game? The survival mode is also pretty nice if you want to play solo.

Until You Fall

Until You Fall

Until you fall is a Roguelite swordfighting game. The basic gameplay is that you advance from room to room killing enemies and receiving powerups as you go. Enemy attacks are telegraphed and avoided by either aligning your weapons to block, or moving your head to dodge. Different weapons have different traits and special abilities, and you can mix and match any two weapons to come up with whatever combos you want to try. Each room and boss you beat awards currency which is used to unlock and upgrade your weapons, so there is progression between each run.

Have you ever played Infinity Blade? If you liked the combat style of Infinity Blade, then you’ll like the combat style of Until You Fall. This is NOT a realistic melee game, but that’s not what it tries to be. Until You Fall is an incredibly fun fantasy arcade-like melee roguelike. Gameplay is simple but very fun and intense (depending on the difficulty of your enemies). The weapon unlocks and upgrades are fun to experiment with, and the melee mechanics are very satisfying. Finally, I really really love the soundtrack - it’s very retro gamey.
