Freedom: How I Escaped

Freedom: How I Escaped

For those who like stealth, maze, and puzzles, this is an early access game with potential.

It has a simple objective, avoid the lights, and run to escape from the place you are.

Nice voxel art and sound.

I had problems controlling the character with a keyboard because my brain thinks I’m playing resident evil 2 when in this kind of camera haha (in re2 when you press up you walk forward). But then I used an xbox controller and it worked perfectly. I wish to suggest an option for the player to change the camera when needed, maybe just cut to another camera angle (like age2 you can “rotate” the map).

A puzzle game with an inspiring theme and very cool Voxel art. Music makes you enter that world and forces you to want to go through all the levels, seeing the challenges that lie you ahead.

Congratulations developers, I want to see more levels soon!

Miasma Caves

Miasma Caves

The gameplay of Miasma Caves is very simple: Explore a cave, find treasure, escape alive to sell said treasure in town, repeat.

The Cons:

  • No Automap (for an exploration game this is a huge drawback)

  • Intermediate cave levels are a bottleneck in difficulty (rocks fall, everybody dies faints)

  • Not much of a story

  • A few minor bugs

The Pros:

  • Over 150 different treasure items of 4 different categories

  • Town can be developed

  • A lot of variety in available tools, which allows for different approaches of exploration.

I have played enough Miasma Caves to recommend it. You play a dragon-lady who spelunks a procedurally-generated cave in search of treasure and you’re a pacifist, so that means that you don’t attack any of the monsters inside. But you still can get hurt (such as from cave-ins, and falls, and the titular miasma), and there’s still a challenge in seeing how far you can go whilst getting out alive! It’s a fun game and I recommend it to anyone, especially those who loved Leila “Woofle” Wilson’s soundtrack in Freedom Planet; some of the greatness in that soundtrack is carried over in this game.

Lemma

Lemma

This game is almost a perfect game of exploration, parkour, stealth, adventure, strategy, and is practically a God-Game, with lots of hours to explore this virtual open world of Lemma. This game will have your hands sweating and your stomach queazy IF you have some fear from heights, but never fear for you cannot die in this world. At times though this doesn’t seem to help when you don’t know how you are going to get to the next plateau, because dying is a way of thriving in this world. You build these walls and platforms of energy ice that will aid you to get to further plateaus that are otherwise inaccessable. You parkour; run, jump, climp, roll, and even build your way, your roads to other levels, other doorways, and other dimensions of Lemma… This game has excellent replay value, because you would never go about doing the same way twice, and you can go and explore at your own pace. BUT CAUTION - laying too many walls of engery ice may impede you from completing a level or even your ending, as the last level had done for me. There is no restart level, so you’ve got one shot to make it right. Save often at the beginning of each level and do not over-ride those saves until you are sure that you have not screwed up. [*Please note that I’ve personally have over 100 hours of gameplay at the end of the game, but am stuck on the last level, because I did just that and it’s impossible to undo (destruction) all your previous construction! And I am going to restart the whole game completely over to get my ending I so deserve. Because knowing is half the battle!!!] Other than that, and a bit of confusion of what or where you are in reference to exactly where you are to go next, with so many countless doors and open world, YOU ARE VIRTUALLY AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE! Be prepared to be sucked into another dimension on the very precipice to soar to the heavens. I highly recommend this game, and again the replay value alone could and should give you an indication of just how enjoyable this game can be. ^5

Three Pros, Three Cons

Cons:

-The only really big flaw in this game - It’s veeerry easy to get lost. You WILL lose track of where to go next several times. There’s a large open world but no system of objectives and little or no guidance whatsoever. I got very frustrated even though I had already beaten the demo.

-The protagonist (you) act like a jerk sometimes. There’s a phone where you receive a bare minimum of guidance for the first couple of levels, with a simple dialogue system with between one and three choices. Typically the choices are either “I need help” or “fuck off, I don’t need your help”.

Edit: It’s become one of my favorite games on Steam! You will really have to think to beat the higher difficulty levels.

It’s a good idea, realize the execution is currently very crude, and English descriptions are laughable. ; - ) almost returned it, but I’m hoping it will continue evolving.

There are some aspects of Tetris (or more accurately Rampart) in the placement phases.

it would be better to have more tiles, as it’s easy to trap yourself with a layout you can’t expand. Edit: You will learn that you can remove the bases and relocate them! Do this wisely for better chance of survival.

If you’re a native English speaker like myself, you might have an issue locating the button to select language. It’s a small hurdle. Apart from that, once you get an idea of what you’re doing in this game, it becomes extremely interesting. You start your little game being able to flip over three tiles, which you can select one of as your turret of choice. It doesn’t end there, and if you think your level one turret will end up just taking space, it won’t. Once you get enough turrets that fit into a crafting recipe, it’ll wipe those tiny little baby turrets out and replace it with a turret with more hair on its chest than Austin Powers'.

Severed Steel

Severed Steel

This is an awesome experience. It’s been a long time since an action game has given me the kind of rush that this one does. The great action-movie mechanics, the incredible soundtrack and the wonderful stylised art all come together to make an experience straight out of kickass action films. If you want to squeeze every last drop out of this game I HIGHLY recommend playing this on Severed Steel difficulty from the start. It’ll frustrate you at first, it’ll take a while to get the hang of it, but when it finally clicks and you start pulling off and chaining together ridiculously cool combat stunts, that’s when the “wow” factor and adrenaline rush kick in hard. Playing on any of the lower difficulties (especially Cold Steel) will drastically dull the experience, and you’ll finish the game in two to three hours with absolutely no challenge and very little thrill. Then for replayability, run the challenges at similar difficulty levels and try to beat your own score. Then there are the modifiers for even more fun. It’s not as easy as it sounds. This is NOT your standard first person shooter. Don’t bother with cover and don’t try to snipe from a distance. Charge in like Doom Guy and kick off some stunts, dodge and weave, and destroy your enemies in a beautiful dance of ninja acrobatics and explosive Gun Fu. Flow like water, and kill them all!

Did you ever wonder what if Max Payne was a woman who lost her arm and she was taking acid instead of painkillers?

Severed Steel is exactly that.

It’s a high-octane movement shooter that rewards the player for perfoming stunts like diving, sliding and wallrunning with invincibility and infinite slow-mo. Don’t expect tactiful gunfighs like in F.E.A.R. where you use slow-mo mostly when you feel overwhelmed, here you throw yourself at your enemies to live. You can’t sidestep individual bullets like in Max Payne or Super Hot, you have rely on stunts to dodge. Healing is done by killing people, so it’s like Doom but without the middle-man.

Very casual arcade-style action game with a light puzzle element. Each level is a sky full of enemies, take as many down as possible with one shot from your laser under time pressure.

Graphics - pixel style, simple but cool. Well-detailed ships. Smooth special effects. Good use of color and design overall.

Sound - amazing. music changes depending on how good your shot is. Memorable sound design overall, will stick with me.

Controls - too simple to critique. Some controller support which works well enough but it probably functions best overall with a mouse. FWIW i cranked my DPI way up because the laser aims very slowly. Not sure if it made a difference. The controls are simple but the overall experience of doing the thing you do (being the death star, basically) is exciting and has good feedback.

Jones On Fire

Jones On Fire

This is the prequel of Hot Tin Roof…is the game fun? No…i will explain why in a pro/ con style and end with my conlusion.

Pro:

N/A

Con:

The upgrades are extremely grindy. In order to have some fighting chance in later levels you need those upgrades. The upgrades cost an arm and a leg and a vital organ like the heart or brain.

The game has 2 currencies. One is regular cats and the other is golden cats. It is very dumb to do that because gold cats are slow to come across and building up to get a single upgrade is very time consuming and adds to the boredem of the game.

You know, I honestly don’t get what all the hate is about for this game. I think it’s a great time waster. For someone who has a lot of free time, and especially during this summer, boredom can hit pretty hard. And for the past few weeks, that’s what’s been happening. It’s games like this and another game I tend to play in short bursts, Pictopix, that really help get me out of those slumps.

And you may not think that boredom is that big of a deal, but for me it is. It leads me to almost what seems like pseudo-depression. A lot of free time and not knowing what to do with that time. It makes me lose motivation for most things, and just overall suckiness. Games like this, simple one off games that really have very little plot, or intense gameplay, just relaxation, which is rare for games these days, are great for fetting out of these moods. I don’t want to hear about story, or tutorials when I’m trying to be entertained, I just want to play, and this game lets me do that. Even the other game this company has made, Hot Tin Roof (which I also own), has a lot of plot and storytelling, which is fine when you’re in the mood for that. But when you’re looking for something to just pass time with, this game is perfect for that.
