Onee Chanbara ORIGIN

Onee Chanbara ORIGIN

OneeChanbara ORIGIN is a great game. Surprising by OneeChanbara standards. This is probably the best OneeChanbara game to date. I’ll break down this review in sections.

Visuals

This might be subjective, but I very much like the new anime art style. For one, the main character artist is Katsumi Enami, known for her artwork in recent Nihon Falcom games. The new art style, which is far from generic anime, really breathes life into Aya and Saki’s designs. One of the strengths of anime art styles is making emotions more prominent on characters’ faces, and this game is no different. You can really see the sadness in Aya’s eyes and the stubbornness in Saki’s. The world settings are a lot more vibrant as well, as are the blood and gore effects. ORIGIN is a really pretty game and will no doubt age well. Also, a quick shoutout to Aya and Saki’s new Xtatic Form appearances. Their Xtatic Forms from Z2 Chaos looked a bit strange (Saki’s looked especially ugly), but in ORIGIN, they’re fantastic. Although there are slight demonic features, Aya’s form is pretty damn sexy, while Saki is still very cute (must be because they maintained that adorable fringe).

Having played Bikini Samurai Squad and Z2 Chaos, I can say that Origin definitely took aspects of those games and not only incorporated them into the game, but also polished and improved upon those aspects. The art style is definitely something I enjoy. It’s a simple yet dynamic and vibrant style that is appealing to the eye and makes the player feel like they’re in an anime which can be enjoyable to some (like myself). It’s really a matter of taste.

Gameplay wise, I enjoyed the element that they incorporated from Z2 Chaos, for instance, XTatic forms and Xtasy combos. It was quite nostalgic seeing those elements again and it definitely made me want to play Z2 Chaos again. I also very much enjoy the parry system. It reminded me of Saki’s counter from Z2 Chaos but much more refined, polished and improved. It gives me a DMC 4/5 Royal Guard feeling. One thing I experienced however when it comes to parries. I’m not sure if anyone else experienced it, but if you parry as Saki against the Fatmen zombies and do a cool finish either in Xtatic form or when you’re about to turn beserk, the camera goes haywire and you zoom around all over the place. It does go back to normal eventually but it’s a very interesting glitch. You can still attack while zooming but you have to shift the camera constantly.

I really enjoy the atmosphere and the overall detail that was put into the game.It is a really well made game for the price. I love the surreal feel, the topic it covers, and that there are different endings. It is a more relaxed horror game, similar to the Yume Nikki games. It’s psychological. No, you can’t save the game and when you die that’s it. But I enjoy that, it adds to the topic. This game deserves more credit. Thanks to the devs.

The concept was good but it’s frustrating because you can’t save nor run and most achivements require the player to die. Something else that annoyed me was that pressing 0 restarted the entire game and was never said, I found that out by accedentally pressing 0 on the number pad next to the arrow keys.

Bullet Witch

Bullet Witch

For both good and bad, Bullet Witch is a very Japanese game. It’s short (only six tiny stages, two of which will take place on the same exact map), rough, unpolished and doesn’t even look that good even for the seventh gen game (originally, it was an Xbox 360 exclusive). Also, the story is way too basic and way too straightforward. But at the same time, it has everything you like about Japanese titles. It has awesome design (ever wanted to play as a kick-ass witch with the broom-like gun?), it has some impressive cutscenes and moves, etc. Running through the ruined cities, summoning tornado and shooting the huge gun? That’s the stuff!

### “Underrated unique action shooter that might present flawed game designs, but still simply fun”

This review is based on perspective of old gaming standard (Bullet Witch is direct port from 2006 first release). So, you might expect some topics to be very subjective. (PC version 1.0.3)

Presentation & Story

Bullet Witch is a third-person shooter developed by Cavia (the studio behind well-known games such as Nier, Drakenguard, and Ghost in the Shell PS2). The game set on a post-apocalyptic time where you control witch Alicia to hunt down the source of supernatural demons.

GUNGUNGUN

GUNGUNGUN

I think this is a very well-designed game and it is really fun and very challenging. It’s easy to get used to and straightforward to play. Each game takes a few minutes at the most, well, for me anyway. There are a couple of small bugs, but this does not affect any overall gameplay.

It plays as a survival shoot-em up platformer. Your character is a female lead who is running away from bandits after stealing their money. The goal is to kill as many bandits as possible and gain more bounty money so that you can purchase hats from the hat store. I am not sure if there is a whole lot more to this at this time, this is what I have gathered from my time on the game so far.

Real player with 16.7 hrs in game

GUNGUNGUN is self-described as “a frantic bullet filled 2D arcade arena shooter.” Although the core gameplay is fun, the overall scope of game is rather limited. Yet if you are in the mood for frantic fun in a small package, this game might just be what you’re looking for. With a title like “GUNGUNGUN,” be ready for a fusillade of fun as you shoot, dodge and rack up a bounty in this title.

STORY

The Prologue is both a tutorial and the only real story bit you will ever receive in the game. The female protagonist (whom I’ve grown to call GIRLGIRLGIRL) decides to steal from a group of presumed bandits but is caught in the act. The bandits give chase as she scrambles aboard a nearby train to escape her pursuers. This is a just framing device to explain the enemies and level theming.

Remothered Tormented Fathers , out in 2018, managed to shake people’s core through shocking plot, gasps, whilst enveloping the players in dread and grating atmosphere. You can imagine my jaw-dropping (not for the reason you’d think) when after two years of hype, anticipation via effective marketing- that Broken Porcelain was finally released to a shattered state… Are there any parts intact from criticism?

Remothered: Broken Porcelain is a sequel to a decent game, Tormented Fathers, which was borrowing heavily from classics such as Clock Tower and a little bit Resident Evil for its basic concepts, to give us a short but intriguing stealth-horror adventure.

This one…. is just gross. Gross and schizophrenic just like most of the cast involved.

The plot revolves around Jennifer, an orphan brought to a newly opened hotel under the Etna, to work as a cleaner. It doesnt take 10 minutes for the story to fly well above its own expectations, as a person who’s supposed to be trustworthy, randomly spills the beans about every minute detail of the owner’s life story to a random orphan from a reformatory. After the load of infodump is nonchalantly thrown in the player’s face, in a couple minutes everyone goes insane just like in the first title, and its up to Jennifer to find a way to escape the hotel, uncover its mysteries, and possibly get to know who she is.

Yandere School

Yandere School

Short, fairly easy, but not bad.

Yandere School is about a school girl named Akari who is in love with a boy named Makio. You play as Akari, and in certain “nightmares”, Makio and one of the teachers. Akari has to kill her rivals and bury them without getting caught, so she can confess to Makio.

The game has 9 levels. Five chapters and four “nightmares”. The “nightmares” are basically “school at night” levels. In three of them, you have to kill a specific student and the other has you kissing one.

Yandere School is a straightforwardly short but disturbingly fun high school simulator that surprisingly comes with little twists and creative ideas that gives it an identity despite its shortcomings. It follows Akari Furutaka, a seemingly innocent but violent individual, eager to succeed her quest obtaining her first lover at the cost of jeopardizing his relationships with other females attracted to him. It’s a bloody game of cat-and-mouse as she slays and buries whoever dares stand between her mission and impending lover. Players are tasked to evade being caught and follow specific directions to assure Akari doesn’t fail to murder or impress anyone.

Acid Nimbus

Acid Nimbus

This game fucking rules. After playing for some hours and completing every level and most achievements I feel i can safely say this game is both very fun, and that is has so much potential. There is already some space for story, Who are the scientists? Why am I here? and why is the ice level such bullshit? Im not sure if the dev reads the reviews, but if they do they should know that Acid Nimbus has a lot of potential and i am eager to find out what they choose to do with the game in the future :)

Fun and challenging. The concept reminds me of geometry wars, but your ammo is limited (until refilled by yellow puddles) and you can aim using the mouse. The goal is to survive as long as you can, while dodging enemies and their attacks. High score goals unlock new levels and weapons. A good way to kill some time if you’re bored, but no real storyline or concept to wanna keep going. Still, I found the game fairly enjoyable. I love the Pixel Artwork and Music too.

After The Suns

After The Suns

First the risers and now this these two developers have done it again. After the suns is a very interesting game that brings out the truest emotions in the player. The work that was put into the animation was well worth it creating a product that rivals even the most renowned of animation studios. With combat that takes both skill and planning to create a flashy and impactful symphony of action that puts even the most expensive hollywood blockbuster to shame. The amazing special effect work in this game truly makes it like a marvel movie right in your own home!!!

Cave of Illusions

Cave of Illusions

A very interesting and compelling game that drives you towards an unsettling reality hidden within a labyrinth of distorted perspectives.

I found the game to be thoroughly enjoyable; from Lesley’s compulsive need to find the truth, coupled with her resolute and almost remorseful fury, to the wickedly playful nature of the realms' puzzles and games of hide and seek, this game offers a special brand of growing dread akin to a waking nightmare.

The storyline itself calls to mind older, almost Grimm Fairy Tale style fears. The sense of Wicked fair-folk and the rising dread of what it means to be “Missing.” There is a very strong sense of dread and almost inescapability, like you’re a mouse slowly creeping down the throat of a spiraling serpent.

This is a solid indie horror game that is rough around the edges but has enough creativity, love and original ideas put into it to be a cool and memorable experience.

The game’s narrative does a very good job at framing the events in mystery and rational uncertainty, which I feel is often missing from supernatural fiction. This story is a lot about reality and perception of reality and the game doesn’t slack at tackling this thematic point. The protagonist grapples with her understanding of events, past and present and it makes it more intriguing, spooky and satisfying. There is also just enough of grounding in reality, and the emotional layers enrich the substance of the game.

Darkness Assault

Darkness Assault

Part VI: Regret

Darkness Assault found its way to my library because i mistook it for a Resident Evil clone. The store page makes it look like it has fixed camera angles.

What i got was a pretty lackluster third person, 80% 3D Maze, 20% action shooter.

Personal opinion is that this should have been reworked for survival horror:

  • Scarcity of ammo can’t be a big deal, if you can ignore enemies all the way to chapter 4

  • Reduce the ridiculous amount of batteries

Real player with 5.6 hrs in game

  • simple

  • cheap

  • cards

  • ( easy + cool 100% ) achievements

  • cutscenes

  • short

+/- trashy / low budget

+/- (only) top-down camera angle let’s you look arround cornes, but not far to your on

  • no real “horror” in it

  • the “atmosphere” could be called as pure silence - only a scream triggers, when you reach some points, nothing else

  • movement is slow + stamina runs out fast - but otherwise it wouldn’t be a “horror” game, i guess

  • choosing your gun or medi-kits only via inventory possible - should be really fixed imo
