Review:

I’m actually surprised by how fun this game was considering the creator emphasizes how early access it is. The game plays well and it really keeps you on your toes, because restarting from the beginning actually sucks. The enemies have some neat attacks and can pressure you pretty well and seeing your character progress it’s pretty entertaining. Improvements I would suggest is telling the player they can leave the run to use their trait points and continue the same run. I think having the shop upgrades cycle as you buy them would keep the game more balanced and interesting, because if shield upgrade and ranged weapon upgrade are available it’s a no brainer what you’re going to buy. I tried 4 different weapons before realizing the starter weapon is all you need I’m not sure if I got unlucky or what, but the starter weapon was the only one which would auto fire when I held the left click. The game can be abused a little bit as well since you can leave the game and rejoin it to make sure the shop has what you want in it. Overall I had a ton of fun with this game and hopefully I’ll be able to check it out again when it full releases.

“A world of murders” - (2015)

Review is based on the Story Mode.

Game type: Tactical RPG with some roguelike elements (if you play in Hard Mode).

Newbies may consider the game as a hack’n’slash turn based. (trust me: don’t do this mistake, you will be frustated).

1st :issue which could potentialy ruin your experience

I absolutly discourage to play in hard mode (ie : you die once & it’s over) : If the game crashes (and it could) , savegame is potentialy corrupted and you will encounter crashes over crashes at random interval . As a result the game become unplayable (the game saves your progress NOT separatly, so you coudn’t choose a prior save point : that’s pretty stupid). Ohter reason the game is challenging.

To sum up: It looks good but feels wrong. It feels like a casual game and a bad port and something that could be fun.

I hope the devs polish this a lot. The PC release needs to play well on a PC.

Let’s start with some basic things, controls. Though the devs have stated that the pc is their primary platform, they don’t play by longstanding pc conventions. What do you expect ‘esc’ to do in a game for pc? Nothing? Oh, wait, it exits menus, but does not bring up an options menu with load and save and most importantly - quit?! How about “alt-tab'? In full screen, nothing, nada, zilch. That’s not right. In a roguelike, dungeon crawler, rpg, etc, pushing the “i” key should bring you to your inventory. And it should be customisable. These are only a few of the issues. All in all it feels like a bad port made primarily for gamepads or touchscreens. I play with mouse and keyboard and have the option of a touchscreen. Touchscreen is too tedious and not precise enough for the action. Mouse and keyboard are awkward. Moving by mouse click will have you fined your hard earned gold when you accidentally cut down city trees (Protip: some things are worth smashing in town once you have some money to pay for it). Moving by WASD and QEZC for diagonals is much better, with enter for attacking the selected target, though that requires the occasional mouse use to point your character in the right direction. For a game that require precision to survive, the controls don’t always allow it. Then there’s the camera…

Evil Maze

I did not enjoy myself while playing this game. The dark theme was a nice touch compared to the usual bright RPGmaker games but that didn’t carry the game enough for me to enjoy this. You start at level 10? on the bottom of what I can only guess is a 10 floor dungeon. I got to the 3rd (7th) floor before I stopped playing

The combat is a simple swing harder and faster than the enemy before it kills you, that’s kind of the theme with most RPG games but in this game you seem to take damage from out of nowhere, and the enemies have no swing animations. This makes it really hard to know where it is safe to stand and what is damaging you. On top of all this, some enemies are massive damage sponges, I was swinging into a 200 health normal enemy doing 7 damage and not every attack was hitting.

Intro

EvilMaze is a hack and slash RPG Maker game with a heroine with big boobs. The only character potrait that this game has is the heroine and both of her potrait and sprite will change based on her equipments. Most of the equipments will have a lack of clothes. On the other side, there are a lot of hidden “secrets” in this game.

Labyrinth of the Witch

Labyrinth of the Witch

Labyrinth of the Witch is a simple roguelite/dungeon explorer game originally for Android/iOS that was ported to PC. This paid version has all of the characters that you would’ve needed to purchase, and has no microtransactions or other mobile shenanigans.

Positives:

  • Simple and easy to learn. The “Puzzle Dungeons” are a fun and interesting way to learn all of the mechanics of the game.

  • Cute and colourful pixel art

  • Addicting gameplay

Negatives:

  • Repetitive music. What little music is here is decent, but gets repetitive really fast. I ended up muting it after half an hour.

Labyrinth of the Witch is a simplified dungeon crawler like DragonFangZ with a cute art style. It removes the frustrating aspects while keeping the randomness and challenge! 7/10

For an Early Access Game this is pretty wholesome. What i would love to see in the future is :

-More maps/biomes ( the more the merrier, personally i think it would be wise to in the future even implement some kind of endless mode when the game/story/map is fully developed )

-New apostles ( that i see are awaiting to be introduced )

-1 more item slot 1 less bow slot for inventory

-Balances to weapons and especially the upgrade system:

If your run actually reaches Underground B2F you are 100% left with a lot of extra armor and upgrade credit you have nothing to do with, this can be fixed by allowing further upgrades of lower rarity weapons that also increases their rarity and also upgrades of higher rarity weapons

A very enjoyable experience so far. I have managed to reach Stage 3, and have really been enjoying the aggressive feel of the Apostle of Night. As a roguelike and bullet hell it has been scratching both itches. Once you get familiar to enemy patterns things start progressing much faster. Only thing I would like to see is a method to increase the effectiveness of the base bow (If there isn’t a way later). Maybe adding a passive to each Apostle to alter the base bow that needs both Stones and Fragments to upgrade.

Anime RPG puzzle survival + challenging - tedious = Miasma counter reduces your health once you reach 100%. Eat nuts to clear miasma. The game is unforgiving, so you would need several tries per stage

Blackfaun

Blackfaun

This game was reviewed using a code sent by the developer/publisher.

Blackfaun is a roguelike game that was released in early December 2015 being developed by a lesser known team, Wild Guess Software. Roguelike is probably my favourite genre just behind RPG, so I was really looking forward to getting stuck into this game.

The game play is very similar to most top down dungeon crawler games, you have a top down view of your character and you have to navigate each level and reach the defeat the final boss on each stage. You have a regular attack (left click) and a special ability (right click); each of these will change throughout your run due to the best part of this game, the loot pickups. Your main attack will change in style, from single target damage, to AOE damage, to a more trap effect. Whilst your special ability can be all sorts of different attacks too, you really get to pick and choose how you play your character with the items on show in the game thus far. As you kill enemies they will drop a sort of potion, whether it is health or mana. Whilst exploring you will also find experience orbs, these orbs also offer the chance to give you a random increase to one of your stats. I thought this was a nice little addition that really makes exploring one of top aims whilst playing.

Blackfaun is a nicely done roguelike wich plays like a Diablo-game.

You move with WASD and use skills and aim with the mouse (or gamepad, if you so choose.)

You find all sorts of loot, which can be better or worse, depending on your skills that you use. When you level up, you can spend attribute points for damage, life or magic find.

Every stage has a boss you must fight. When you finish the last boss or die during the dungeon, you can start over with better passive skills to begin with. These passive skills are unlocked when you find them as itemdrops or as achievement rewards. They can alter your gameplay a little bit every time you play.

DragonFangZ - The Rose & Dungeon of Time

DragonFangZ - The Rose & Dungeon of Time

A neat mystery dungeon clone (in the style of Shiren the Wanderer) with 2 unique gimmicks:

  1. Fangz: Any enemy you kill might drop a “fang”, sort of the monster’s essence, which you can equip for a unique skill and some passive ability or sacrifice it for some immediate 1x effect.

  2. Bravery: Simply by having your hero fight 1 or more baddies in the open (not adjacent to a wall and thus leaving yourself open to being swarmed), you’ll both charge your fangz (the primary way to do so) or allow certain passive abilities trigger.

Excellent Mystery Dungeon style roguelike game! Very highly recommended!

It takes the classic mechanisms found in games like Shiren the Wanderer (SNES is my only reference), and adds a few very cool layers. I really like how the brave meter encourages more interaction with the environment - its no longer just about finding pinch points, as being in the open makes you much stronger. I also really appreciate the fangs which work like monster souls and allow the player to customise their loadout (after hunting the monsters that provide these fangs). Once you start to stock up your warehouse, this game really shines.

Leyline Knights

Leyline Knights

If you like Roguelikes like Hades, you’d enjoy this. A couple of patches can get it working well cause I did encounter a couple a couple of bugs (in fact I only stopped playing because of one). I didn’t quite understand what are the things you select before you start the “Dungeon Run” but its fun. Managed to fight (and not always defeat) a couple of bosses which from my experience in 1 hour of play were all different so that nice. Also I have no idea how you can get back with your gems, I wanted to buy some permanent buffs but when I died I always lost everthing (not sure if intentional but usually you get to keep a small percentage if you don’t make it till the end)

Real player with 2.3 hrs in game

I’d recommend this game, it’s a nice action roguelike game with a nice replayability value through the possibilty of different builds.

Your goal is to climb the Great Tree to do so you’ll fight enemies through different areas and maps and fight your way against bosses.

You have access to numerous upgrades, items and combining various elements to help you through it and advance to the next level of an area.

You’ll encounter NPCs that will help you and tell you a bit more on the lore.

You can also tailor your playstyle with the purchase of upgrades and such.
