Heileen 3: New Horizons

Heileen 3: New Horizons

This game is definitely filled with pros and cons. While I did think it was an improvement from the first two games, there’s definitely some issues to be taken with it.

This game has a simulation aspect blended into the visual novel experience. Each day, Heileen has to choose certain activities to do in order to increase stats for skills and advance skills. While I definitely don’t have a problem with simulation aspects being put into visual novels, I must say this game’s sim system is quite tedious. It took me several hours and several playthroughs just to get all of the achievements, because the simulation portion of the game takes far too long. Those who don’t have a lot of patience would definitely dismiss the game quickly. Meanwhile, I almost developed carpal tunnel syndrome from clicking so rapidly and frequently. The basic concept for the activities and stat development isn’t terrible though. That idea is fun, but I definitely wish they hadn’t made it so tedious.

“Heileen 3: New Horizons” is final chapter in Heileen saga of visual novels by Winter Wolves. In short, it’s telling the story of a young girl accompanying her rich uncle (who is pursuing the business in the New World) and eventually getting involved with pirates. It features all you can expect from a visual novel and it features elements of dating and raising sim. The game is running on Ren’Py engine and is not voiced (considering the number of characters, I actually see it as a sensible choice from the developer).

This game? Sigh. It reminds me of one of those hidden object or straight puzzle games like House of Davinci that has no real story but a whole bunch of rooms and little gears and keys you have to find to move to the next room. I wish I had known or I wouldn’t have bought it. We spend the first chapter trying to get out of a room and then searching for bandages and disinfectant. After successfully completing that, we are now playing as an annoying little girl who whines about everything. “I can’t read,” she screams when we click on a piece of paper. “There’s no pictures,” she squeals when we click on books. Yet, somehow she is able to collect “sleepy” powder and know exactly what it is. I kept searching for something to kill her off before I reminded myself this wasn’t that kind of game. She wanders around commenting on how she doesn’t like anything she sees. After viewing a drawing of a ship, she says tearfully, “I don’t like this picture at all. It’s scary.” It’s a pencil drawing of a ship and this girl is afraid of it? Then she brattily comments that her mommy is prettier than a painting on the wall. She has an annoying habit of overenuciating certain words. So instead of saying picture, she will say, “PICT-TURE.” It’s extremely irritating. She is just the WORST. I don’t much care for playing games as a child in general, but this really took the cake.

Great point and click adventure.

I completed the adventure as it should be completed, with no hints or peeks at walkthroughs. It took me about 18 hours, so those people who claim to have finished this in 6 hours can only have used walkthroughs.

There are 10 chapters and each chapter progresses the story very nicely.

What I loved about this title was the dialogue, which was funny and made perfect sense. The voices of the many characters were all really well done and very much added to the atmosphere. Some of the characters are particularly brilliant, such as the debonnaire but daft Briscoe, the fabulous Buck who reminded me of so many people I’ve met in SE Asia (the developers really nailed that character), Sonia is the most hilarious and cagey dock side ‘worker’ ever, and of course the lead character, Morgaine, is a superb act. There are many more great and wacky characters that will be encountered that really do a great job.

Before you can play fluently this game you first have to install and run ‘dxwnd’ on your computer. For more instructions you can check the topics here on steam. Then the game runs perfectly. I only don’t understand why Steam itself doesn’t tell you just in the gamedescription what you have to do to play this game on modern computers. If you are bothered about the fact your gamingtime on Steam doesn’t count anymore: First run the game with ‘dxwnd’ and after that close the game immediately. When you run the game again with Steam after this, your gamingtime is working too again on Steam…

Alistair Beckett King is a delight to the senses and an artist of experiences. Excellent comedy styles of wit, word play and niche novelty soaks through into the games humor and cleverness. Excellent point and click, good difficulty level without feeling lead by the nose or frustrated with clues. I love the characters which you get a feel from first interaction - concise and memorable. I loved Nelly Cootalot The Fowl Fleet so much I got it on PC and Android - so when I heard this was coming to Steam it was immediately on my wishlist and thoroughly requested.

Short Answer:

A short but sweet labor of love that hearkens back to the pirate-themed point & click puzzle games of the past. Not too easy but not too hard, with just enough of that “point & click” logic to make puzzles interesting but not impossible to solve. The campy voice acting adds a good bit of charm to the equally campy British humor, though not every joke is guaranteed to land (fair warning, not all are age-appropriate despite its kid-friendly look). Only takes a few hours to beat, but the price tag is low enough to justify the short experience–and revenue is donated to a bird conservation charity to help sweeten the deal.

I like the freedom to just do what ever you like in the game as far as pirating/trading/missions. And the open world aspect and the way you can capture ships to upgrade/sell or add to your own fleet.

Uncharted Tides: Port Royal

Uncharted Tides: Port Royal

I played Uncharted Tides: Port Royal on Windows. An enjoyable game with differing types of HOP’s and a reasonable storyline. The minigames were good at a decent difficulty level. I have played many many HOPA’s and though this isn’t up with Lost Lands, (understandably as that is a huge tale over many episodes,) it’s good in its own right. On first playthrough I missed one Achievement, Sea Shanty, (which i’m still at a loss as to how I missed it),

I didn’t use a walkthrough though there are ones available,

I got this game as part of a bundle. Decent hidden object puzzles. Most of the puzzles were intuitive and whenever it is not you can use hints which are infinite (casual difficulty).

The hints recharge fairly quickly and I never felt completely stuck with the puzzles.

Talking about the story, I found it to be… okayy. I didn’t like the game’s music in most places. It could have been a more piratey theme.

Characters don’t have any depth. For example, Jane’s father / Ben and all other characters are completely useless because they don’t help us in anyway. They merely command us to do something because they are unable to do it. But at the end Ben gets thanked which was odd.

Mutiny!!

Mutiny!!

* A free key of the main game was given to me. Even so, that didn’t affect my opinion of the final product. I’ve bought the DLCs with my own money.

Mutiny!! is a very peculiar visual novel; it’s a mix of fantasy, adventure, puzzles and… porn. This game actually surprised me, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it so much. First of all, please keep in mind that this VN only has yuri (girl x girl) routes. And some of the girls are futanari (female looking hermaphrodite characters - yeah, there are snakes in those bushes lol). If you can’t stand those things maybe it’s better to go look for another game to play. But honestly, if you’re feeling like playing something unusual… You could give Mutiny!! a chance.

I had passing interest in this game when I first saw it on the store front, more pulled in by visions of sexy monster girls and pirate shenanigans than anything, but upon starting to play this game… Dayum. I was not expecting the sheer amount of joy I got out of, and continue to get out of this game.

Between the fun of the main character being someone who wears her love of things lewd on her sleeve, while having a damn good wit to pair with the flirts, and the sheer amount of just good feels playing and seeing characters develope, this game was worth every penny.

Set in early 17th century, just before the Pirate Golden Age, The Spanish Privateer places you in the shoes of Isabel Carlota de Castilla (but you can just call her Carlota). Captain Rico is a privateer, a pirate with a letter of marque allowing him to attack and capture the enemies of Spain. Carlota soon falls in love with the sea, and challenges herself to become a valuable member of the ship.

Amidst sword fights, balls, and drunken nights at the tavern, Carlota learns more about her fellow crew members and the world outside Spain. Visits to the archipelago of Azores, cities in the Caribbean and Veracruz, New Spain, teach Carlota about the effects of colonization and make her question her contribution and power aboard the Spanish ship.

No matter which route you travel down, Carlota must overcome her male crew members' prejudices, earning their respect with her hard work, determination, and intelligence.

Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet

I’ve LP’d the previous installment , Kickstarted the sequel, and was rather looking forward to this. Let’s break down my impressions, from least important to the most:

Graphics: I kinda miss the original hand-drawn look. It had a unique charm to it that the smoother and less unique 3d models lack.

Voicework: Quite good all around. Except from some British TV guy – apparently everyone were so excited to have him on that they forgot to check whether his voice fits the character.

As I have been following the game’s author’s main work for a while, (which I would highly recommend to most people on the planet) I finally brought myself to buying the game during a sale. The drawing style is simple, but atmospheric, the voice-acting is mostly superb and the few birds one gets to see up close are truly adorable. The highlight of the game definitely are the song-bits, which are completely insane and oddly catchy. Bought it during a sale and thought it was quite sweet. Especially for a game both written and animated by someone who, as far as I understand, only dabbles in game-development.
