This is an Exploration/indie/Visual Novel/Oral History game about a teenager growing up in Belgium during WWII.

This is a personal story. The devs grandmother is who is telling it and voices herself. You see the farm she was raised on.

  • Story

  • Graphics

  • Unique Puzzles via your phone and keywords

  • Voiced by the woman who lived through it

After finishing this I had to sit and just think about it for a while; it is a powerful story.

How many family histories are left behind that future generations will never know?

Where to start?

I do not write many recommendations (almost never), but this game deserves one.

Please ignore all and any negative rating, because this is a game in it’s early days.

ABOUT THE GAME:

This game is one of a kind. As a gamer that focus on RPG genre I would say this is an untold gem.

The creator of the game created a wonderful world, with an exciting story line, interesting characters, and what most amazing are the real world and life choices you have to make.

Unlike other games which focus on loot, leveling up, etc.. THIS game focus on the spirituality and morality of one’s very soul. You are faced with choices that sometimes leave you breathless as there is no good choice. Other times, you will make a choice and the way things unfold will surprise you in disbelief.

TL;DR - Clunky UI and Easily manipulated dialog/combat check system. Too many statistics that have no discernible impact on game-play. Good story telling and choices actually matter.

So far I’ve played this game a bit, I’ve gotten through the content for the first act relatively quickly. Take your time with the choices you make and think carefully about them as they WILL affect the rest of your play-through. Some choices completely change what story elements you see and will entirely remove various story branches. You character does not have plot armor, you can and will die if you make stupid choices.

Wars and Warriors: Joan of Arc

Wars and Warriors: Joan of Arc

Very old but catchy and interesting game. For the first time, I’ve played this game when I was a child, and it gave to me tons of hours of fun. Now I can remind to myself of these epic and positive moments.

What’s the game like?

I can compare it with Dynasty Warriors with an actual story set in medieval times, with an inventory system and RTS elements. In simple words, it’s like an RPG (but more or less linear) where you can select the character (not only Joan of Arc is available). The game has eight stages, and each stage has it’s own huge battleground – an entire map where you can feel yourself free to explore every corner. It’ll take about 2-3 hours to finish it. There are even some sub-quests you can get from civilians. However, the main feature of the game is fighting and castle sieges. Command all your troops via RTS mode to besiege the castle or stronghold and switch your control to Joan of Arc to fight personally. Tons of enemies will try to separate your body from your head. You can lead your battle however you want: upgrade your main characters stats and lead an entire army to victory or fight alone 1vsDozens of bastards.

Jeanne d’Arc/Joan of Arc is a medieval action-RPG set during the 100 years war. You can switch to a RTS camera, but if you don’t like it, you only have to use this once to man a trebuchet and command it to attack a fortress. The main focus of the game is combat. You will speak with French citizens and do side missions, but for the most part, you will fight against the English and their allies. I quite like the combat and its many combo attacks, but some newcomers might get overwhelmed by the amount of enemies. Levelling up, increasing your stats and improving your gear and weapons is addicting and you will get very strong at the end of the game when one hero can potentially take out enemy castles on their own if you do it right. Joan of Arc is all about making good tactical decisions and be smart about it. Otherwise you make it harder for yourself. I recommend this game to players who are interested in a medieval setting with lots of fighting.

its ok.

I’m not saying its unplayable!

The story isn’t bad, and i did enjoy it a few times, but its mostly just walk around, press this, read that, listen to this audio. you don’t actually get to make decisions or explore properly, visually its nice, but there is so little of actual interest to look at, the house itself was disapointingly small, with only two chairs, a small table, a bed, a weird thing on a wall, and a few stone pillars. it doesn’t feel like a proper museum or historical exhibit.

I really liked this game. For me it was pretty much Job Simulator because:

  • I work in history, preservation & archives (the game even mentioned one of my old jobs, Library of Congress)

  • I’m Black

  • I live in Maryland, visited Virginia lots (obv. not now, not trying to die of modern plague)

Hence why this game was basically Job Simulator for me. From the decor to the scanner/computer set-up to the gift shop to the micro-aggressive White employees (I couldn’t help but to go, “wow, did they just pull these emails direct from the jobs I have been on?") to the douchebaggery of the estate when there are Black American patrons trying to simply trace their family trees, not write exposes, because the estate goes “Oh noes! Our reputation!” - everything is pretty dead on accurate for me. It’s also wild hearing places in Maryland & Virginia and going, “I know where that is and, wow, these documents look just like the ones I scan and transcribe daily.”

Dirty Wars: September 11

Dirty Wars: September 11

Chile, September 11, 1973

The Military Coup of Pinochet’s army overthrows President Salvador Allende’s democratically elected government, marking the beginning of 17 years of horror and genocide. Exile, censorship, torture and the forced disappearance of people who oppose the new regime are performed on a daily basis.

Maximiliano and Abigaíl, a young couple who decide to stay in Chile, join the resistance against the dictatorship, sacrificing everything to enter a life of secrecy in which they must face multiple challenges.

Dirty Wars is a video game that combines stealth mechanics, puzzles and interactive dialogues in a closed and immersive world with defined objectives.

You play as Maximiliano and Abigail, who must overcome difficult objectives in order to opose the regime, in a time where only one side had all the weapons and the use of information and counter-intelligence are much more valuable.

There are no inventory systems or acquired skills, in the resistance the only weapon to survive is your intelligence and your ability to understand the security rules that will keep you going in the fight against the dictatorship, an unequal fight that will take years.

The compartmentalization is the iron law of resistance. No member can know personal information about an other, or anything that the dictatorship can use. Anyone could be captured, tortured and forced to give out information at any time.

In moments of great tension and danger, armed confrontation is not an option. Use the elements of the environment to hide and avoid being heard by the repressive forces.

Dirty Wars is a Chilean video game for the world. Introducing a completely Chilean and Latin American story that shows part of the culture, art, music and aesthetics from this corner of the world.

Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds

Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds

I’ve been a VN enthusiast for awhile now and this game and its sequel caught my eye in a recent sale. I was thinking, “Hmm, I want some romance, this looks good.” I did indeed get some flashes of romance, though relatively subtle and subdued, in the lengthy and complex story. But I was soon completely caught in the world and the time and the turmoil it was set in. Immediately arrested by the setting and conflicts, though they were in another country centuries ago on the other side of the world, I started researching them on the side as I made my way through the story. I found the real historical bones of it very easy to pick out from the flights of fancy that make it a historical fantasy. To be honest, I’d rather have less apparent romance in a story where the setting, conflicts, all the characters and their relationships with each other are so fleshed out as this one, because it makes the romance more poignant and believable when you do get a glimmer or foreshadowing of it. I hear the second part of the game, Edo Blossoms, has the actual romance parts of the stories, and it feels like it will be so much more rewarding after the work to weave the friendship in Kyoto Winds.

Note: Keep in mind that Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is only the first half of the game/plot. Kyoto Winds ends where the individual character routes in other Hakuoki versions would usually begin.

Played Character Route Order: Chikage ◈ Sanosuke ◈ Hijikata ◈ Iba ◈ Souji ◈ Ryouma ◈ Yamazaki ◈ Saito ◈ Shinpachi ◈ Heisuke ◈ Sanan ◈ Souma

You can see this review as the first part of a summarized review of Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds and Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms, because basically everything I wrote here can be easily applied on both games. You can read about my personal thoughts, and final conclusion in my review for Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms, if you are interested.

Lady in Mystery

Lady in Mystery

I enjoyed Lady in Mystery very much. I’m sad it’s over.

This is Yuri. You play a few characters in this VN. At first I was confused about who is who because the narration changes between them. I hadn’t realized that until I noticed that at the bottom right corner, the initials of the character’s name you are about to play as, shows up. Suddenly everything made sense. lol

The main character is Heesoo/Seol-Young and she is the one you play as most of the time. She is a woman pretending to be a man due to her tragic past. She lives and works with her servant Woosung and they pretend to be brothers. While working as private detectives they help people and also investigate the whereabouts of the person that

! killed Heesoo’s family and ruined their lives.

After Black Closet (and it’s since 2016!), it was such a long time to find the next proper yuri game that suit my taste. I do enjoy those lighted-heart, heart-warming, gentle, simple plot yuri game like OshiRabu, Perfect Gold or Those without voice, but I WANT something more serious. And this is it! I’m glad Lady in Mystery got localization! Especially since it was such an old game (it was out in Korean since 2012). Oh how I wish LiM have voice acting while playing, it would be AMAZING. Mata Hari

Mata Hari

Really enjoyed this adventure game!! It’s different than the average point-and-click adventure game in that the decisions made by the player will change how the story unfolds. Which, in turn, affects your scoring at games end. You play as Mata Hari and are recruited as a spy. As story progresses, you end up becoming a double agent. As with point-and-click adventure games, it is somewhat linear. However … the key is to strategize. You’re a spy. Stop and think. Even though some characters may suggest you go to one country, try going a different route via a different country first. There are side ‘missions’ that are at play while completing primary missions at hand. With my first playthrough, I pretty much did what I thought I was ‘supposed’ to do per the character interactions to get what I needed to further the story. My score was pretty sad at games end and I didn’t understand why. On my second playthrough, I took more time, chose different routes than suggested by characters, tried to avoid interaction with certain characters until necessary, and was delightfully surprised that I could do much more than I thought. Any adventure gamer will really enjoy this game!!!!

I’ve played the game twice by now (once for myself, once for recording) and am almost kind of surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I don’t usually play games all the way to the end if I’m not recording them (I hate boss fights and give up pretty fast if I don’t get a puzzle), but this is one of the few games which I have actually played until the end on my own.

I love the story, Mata Hari’s character, the characters she meets and the environments. Sadly cannot say much for the audio since I do not pay as much attention to that as I should. There is a lot of travelling back and forth between scenes/places however, as others have pointed out. I personally have no problem with all the travelling back and forth throughout the game, though the mini-game for it (if you choose/have to play it) does become difficult quite fast. I also enjoyed the dancing mini-game, though that one might not be the easiest or smoothest in terms of game play.
