I am not fond of platformers in “normal” times. But Otterways made an amazing game that conveys a message all of humanity (men and women) should all learn.

If you can save buying a coffee on your week, you can buy the game, and possibly a few keys to share with whoever you want!

Eliza is an insightful experimental visual novel that revolves around the life of Evelyn Ishino-Aubrey and her interaction with a digital therapy service. Evelyn, returning to the world after a three-year depression fog, doesn’t feel invested in much of anything that she does. She wants to reboot herself, she tries in different ways but she fails. As part of re-entry to society, she takes a job at Skhanda as a proxy for Eliza, a therapy service that’s powered by an artificial intelligence.

For the first two hours this game had me thinking it’d be one of the all-time greats. By the time the credits rolled, it ended up still being great but not without flaws. It’s absolutely worth playing, and I’d recommend it to pretty much everyone as an almost must-play, but the story and its lack of interest in adequately exploring the many big ideas that were presented early on left me just a little bit disappointed.

Those first few hours saw the game flirting with issues such as the gig-economy and the McDonaldization of formerly professional jobs as a means of generating cheaper labour. These topics were cleverly commented upon through the interface and theme of the mental health app - “Eliza”. These game-play sections see the player occupy the role of an unqualified therapist instructed what to say and do by a smartphone application named “Eliza” that’s hailed to be the the latest and greatest form of psychological care. This painted a pretty grim and all too plausible picture of mental health-care as imagined by tech companies and technocrats of today. The problems of crunch and abusive work practices within contemporary corporate culture were also interesting topics to see explored. I especially liked the blatant hypocrisy of these supposed corporate pioneers advocating for these new mental health treatment practices (and a freer market for them to operate under) while treating their staff like crap and (spoilers) literally working them to death under the guise of this martyrdom being for the greater good.

Well then, where to start…

This game is mostly text, but there are gameplay elements, so if you like being invested in a great story, look no further. As one might guess, this takes place in space. The gameplay elements are not very complicated, though some of them are luck based. Average time for a full playthrough is around 10h. You can grab it on sale, but normally the price shouldn’t be very high. The art (the scenes) is quite good, the lore is original and the world (The exploration part) is rather well-made for a 2.5D game. It is not a very difficult game. I really enjoyed it and would recommend you give it a try.

The gameplay consist of planet explorations, puzzle solving, try / roll for luck mechanic tailored into this masterpiece.

If you’re searching for something with deep and emotional story, try this.

The soundtracks are definitely worth the purchase. so if you can, get the game with it.

Basic things you should know:

  • Despite appearances, Rumu is “not a branching narrative ” – none of the dozens of dialogue options you’ll be asked to click through influences the story.

  • The game proceeds through “days,” and you can’t save anywhere mid-day. If you quit out and continue, you go back to the start of the day.

Spoilers ahead. In summary, the game is tedious, too short, (only around 2-5 hours of gameplay) and too predictable.

I’ll give props where props are do. The game did its job in surprising you, in some cases. It was also pretty interesting the first time playing. The graphics aren’t godawful, and the vacuuming parts were pretty satisfying. Now for my complaints.

The storyline was too predictable. There was so much foreshadowing in parts like how Sabrina stuttered a ton when mentioned David and Cecily’s absense. There was obviously something shady Sabrina did.

Firstly, I didn’t realize this was a short promo game (that’s on me, of course, since I usually don’t read the game info before playing games). However, it still was a decent enough promo game. It definitely made me want to know more of the story. The story itself in this promo game was very brief (which is expected). The graphics are decent enough, I suppose. I did expect horror based from the user tags (which are always a hit or miss), but there isn’t any real horror, just a bit of suspense and dark themes (or a hint of a dark theme that involves possible

! incest/pedophilia, rather). So, definitely hope the next game lives up to the hype this game created.

This was a rather short game with beautiful graphics (hello? that flooring?). I didn’t understand any of it when I began. I purposely played this game without even looking at the description because I wanted to see how I’d feel while playing it. I felt extremely weirded out by all the bunnies, and skeptical of the casserole. All in all, it was short and interesting despite it’s simple controls and minimal dialogue. It seriously left me craving more of this story. I feel like the more I learned, the more I needed to know.

This is a game that grows on you… And in you, like a flower daemon.

I have to admit, I had trouble getting into this game at first. I went in expecting a rhythm game, and played it like one. But Memody: Sindrel Song isn’t a rhythm game, and in fact it’s not even really a music game - at least, not exclusively. Yes, the music is there, yes, it’s really hard when you first start out and you’ll fail a lot, yes, the songs are varied and nice to listen to (especially considering the total of 12 unique notes used over 7 songs), and yes, I did spend way too long trying to get 180% on all the songs. But under each song is also a carefully and intricately crafted character. And that’s where Memody: Sindrel Song begins to take on a new shape.

It’s hard to give this game a poor review—not so much because the game is without fault but because of the backstory behind it and the man doing the development. (Just do a little investigation into why this game was made and you’ll get the picture. Do a little more research on Toby himself, and . . . well, his mind isn’t in the best place, he reads reviews, and he doesn’t take negative ones particularly well.) I totally get the idea creating a passion project and releasing it because it’d be a shame not to—I’ve done that myself with creative writing (also about cancer, coincidentally—Google “Taialin oblivion” for that). But that makes reviewing the game by its own merits difficult. If you’re reading this, Toby, I criticize the game, not the person—it takes astounding courage to publish something like this.

Before actually working on a project of this scale, the basic design should be perfect. Feedback from actual players (you guys) is extremely valuable in determining what works and what doesn’t. Releasing a free demo on Steam seems like the best way to get as much feedback as possible in the shortest time.

The demo could be considered a condensed version in terms of gameplay. It includes most of the characters, skills, equipment, items and enemies that are planned for the full game. There’s no plot, however, no quests, no puzzles. The game elements and locations may or may not be part of the full game. That depends on your feedback! :)

Wildsilver is planned to be released in autumn 2022. There may be an early-access version.
