Shadow Blade: Reload

Shadow Blade: Reload

Shadow Blade: Reload is everything I wanted from a speed-running ninja game. When speaking to friends about games of this genre, Shadow Blade is a go-to to mention, even among more critically acclaimed titles like Mark of the Ninja. I’m not saying you’ll get the same polish or intuitive game-play as in Mark of the Ninja, but you certainly will have a blast playing through this title.

Keep it mind, this game was a failed project for its developers. Only 160 reviews, god only knows how many sales, the developers are indie and a small team, and the game frequently goes on sale for 99 cents. I’m not reviewing this game with the same standards as I would a 60$ game with a huge team, because that’s not what this is.

Gone from the days of gaming are the distilled shots of adrenaline and the twitch based action from titles such as Shinobi or Strider that pressed us to try again and again. Now replaced with fluff and filler, the complex tutorials and drawn-out narratives that take the place of what could be great gameplay. Shadow Blade follows in the spirit of the aforementioned hacknslash titles with it’s to-the-point levels and their memorable designs.

Shadow Blade: Reload is a speed runner’s paradise, through and through.

10 Second Ninja

10 Second Ninja

Let me just say that this game is.. so funny!

And for less than 2€/$.. I would recommend it all the times!

Basically, it works as a normal action game - and it’s all quite easy to explain, while it’s.. very hard to master the whole game!

Every single level of this game is based in a rectangle-shaped world, with all the four walls closed. You will play as a small ninja - I STRONGLY advise to use a controller - and you’ll be able to use the four traditional keys: A is used to jump (I’m referring to a XBOX controller, but anyways you’ll be able to remap and see everything in-game), X is used to swing your sword, B to throw a shuriken (you’ll have 3 shurikens only for each level) and Y.. no, I was joking. The Y key isn’t used at all.

10 Second Ninja is caught in a strange position for me. At first glance (as well as when you play it) the concept seems more geared to be a mobile game than a PC game. However, the pacing is more fitting of a PC/console game. Completing each level in 10 seconds or less is not hard at all, even if you aren’t used to fast paced games. With practice, avoiding spikes and falling objects becomes easy. The real challenge is getting 3 stars on every level, which can take some time.

If you are considering buying it, ask yourself this: “Am I going to try to 100% it?” If the answer is no, you aren’t going to get much out of the game. Playing through each level only once won’t take much time, and is especially not worth $9.99 in that regard. If you are a completionist (or are for just this game), definitely pick up the game, but still at a discounted price. I only heard about it and bought it because I crafted a 90% off coupon for it (s***, it was 99 cents!). At that price, it was definitely worth it.

(Don’t Fear) The Templar

It took playing the recent Quake remaster, but now I get it.

It’s good. Nay, ace. No doubt about it. If it wasn’t up against the stiff competition that is the years upon years of high quality ‘boomer’ shooters, this would be a completely unqualified early access recommendation.

Ultrakill, Ion Fury, Post Void, Project Warlock 1 + II, Amid Evil, DUSK, HROT, Maximum Action, GTTOD, Prodeus, Cultic, etc - be they full games, early access, or just demos, the retro, ‘boomer’ shooter genre really is booming. I also cannot wait for the likes of Into the Pit, Fortune’s Run, and Forgive Me Father. In fact, there are so many that even when I say that I’d place this firmly mid-list it’s not even that damning.

TLDR; If you like retro shooter gameplay, and would like to have fun, buy it now!

I will just start listing what comes to mind, that makes me love this game, then write some experiences from my first 8 hours of playing on the hardest difficulty so far. Smooth movement with air controll using the mouse, running feels similar to classic doom (taking a short time to reach full speed), satisfying meaty gun sounds and very good feedback with lots of gore, build variety that actually changes gameplay, bullet time, stylish awesome visuals, amazing soundtrack, atmosphere, very good enemy and level design, exploration with rewarding secrets to find, weapon swapping combos combined with positioning during combat.

Boomerang X

Boomerang X

Boomerang X is an insanely fast paced fling and zing game.

I see a lot of people leaving reviews saying that they are upset with the fact the base game takes only 2 hours to beat.

What they always fail to mention is that those 2 hours are packed to the brim with just about all the content you need. The arguably short playtime required means the game will never feel dull and every 10 minutes or so you will be introduce with a new environment, possibly new ability, and more knowledge on how to beat the next level. It’s addicting to go through the motions of progressing in this game which is why I think it’s so appealing to speedrunning.

$20 for such a short game is fairly steep (1-3 hours with New Game+), so I can only recommend this game to anyone interested in speed running and gyro. I’d honestly put this game at $5 - $10 max regardless of it being a speed run game. The only reason I paid the full $20 was because of Flick Stick.

An issue I’ve seen brought up is that Flux (slow motion) is too strong. You can use it every time you throw the boomerang. This feels like it was balanced for New Game+ as enemy density basically forces you to constantly use it. Since there is a super meter in the game (Comet Mode), I think there is an obvious solution. Make it so taking out enemies not only fills Comet Mode but using Flux will also drain it. Since the game was made for speed running though, I don’t think any changes will be made to Flux.

Will you enjoy this game challenging puzzles? Yes!

Will you also want to rage quit at least a dozen time? YES!

After 20 hours, I have all the achievements except one (“Wooooooooooooooah - Livin' on a prayer”), the hardest one requiring X rank for all marathons and all 300 stars. I always tell myself, after completing one marathon, that I’ll stop there, but no, after a few hours or a day, I want to go back. So I’ll keep on trying for that last achievement, but I think it’s time to review this game.

10 Second Ninja X is a puzzle platformer, where you are a Ninja in a forest and you get caught by an air ship pirate and he wants to put to the test and make you suffer, with levels which you need to destroy robots in 10 seconds.

What 10 Second Ninja X did right, is the music part. Some tracks are suprisingly good. Most of the sounds effects all right, can be annyoing if you listen it long term, but not too bad.

Story of the game is… simple. You get caught and you make your way and in the end after a realization, characters change and the story ends. I don’t want to spoil too much of it, because it has a lesson, but it’s not that big twist and the background of the whole thing is really foggy. I know this is a simple game and the characters are little bit are like parodies, but it just felt weird to see the reasons of some characters. Not bad story, but not the thing you want to play this game only.

Musashi vs Cthulhu

Highly addictive game with a simple concept where timing is crucial for high scores. I’m not very good 285 is my highest score thus far but I can’t stop playing. I love the art style there’s a lot going on fog, torches, hanging bodies, great attention to detail. It’s a pity i die when I stare at the scenery. The audio is well done also music and ambient sounds really add a lot to the atmosphere. I’m having a great time with it and I can’t wait for more content. Good job devs Recommend

i have to say, that of all the games i have played that share this very same concept, and that been on a mobile gaming platform, playing this game in particular with a controller rather then tapping on a screen took me like 30 minutes to get use to it, but in no time at all natural progression finally kicked in and i was tapping away like a semi pro, and the funny thing about a game like this is, that it is so simple in design and game play but can be real challenging also, and is the reason why you find yourself going again and again until you get that high kill rank score and then once you get a high score your always challenging yourself to beat it, plus having an online ranking board to compete against other players makes the game even more worth while to play, and this game compared to all the others like it has that real unique spin on it where your not just tapping left and right all the time in certain tap sequences, you have to tap up, down, left, and then Y, B, A that is with the controller though, and i really like this method of control and that’s what makes this game more enjoyable to play is the unique control style plus when you get to the monsters with the extra marked points on their bodies then that’s when it gets more intense, so yeah i really like this game and i have been a fan of this type of game since playing them on mobile devices, but i have to say overall this by far has to be my most favourite one of all, so in closing i will say, that this is a simple game with a unique style of control and and challenging game play, and offers even more potential then then other games that are like it, and i can’t wait to see the story mode added and different Backgrounds, costumes and weapon skins for Musashi and last but not least i would be so happy if you add an extra playable Female Character that also somehow fits into the story mode to make her more relevant in addition to been added to the game, when it becomes available

Black & White Bushido

Black & White Bushido

This is a game about speed, stealth, and lighting. The lighting seems to change at random times.

You play on either the light team or the dark team. If you stand still while in your element (a light team member in the light, a dark team member in the shadow) you disappear from sight, and can hold a button to stay hidden and move slowly. But if you dash (your typical movement speed), your outline becomes a bit easier to see. I’ve found it’s easier to distinguish a moving dark team member in shadow than it was to detect a moving light team member in light, which unbalances it a bit, but it’s not too bad, and I’m sure its something the devs can easily fix.

Short version:

Worth buying at 75% off, if you have friends to play it with. Not worth full price. Don’t expect to find people to play with online.

Long:

Black & White Bushido is a game heavily based on stealth. You can play either Light (white ninjas) or Shadow (black ninja). There are four character models, though (ironically for a game so heavily based on the popular idea of ninjas), none of them are in stereotypical ninja garb. You then choose to play online or offline.

Offline, you can play either against bots or (presumably, since I’ve never tried it) couch two player. The stage is small, so there’s no need for split screen. Online, you can try to find a match, but the matchmaking is extremely barebones. I play with my fiancee, and the only way we can find each other’s matches is by coordinating over the phone. There is no indication of who else is playing, even once you’re in the match. You don’t see screen names, just “Player 1.” Also, as many other reviews have noted, there is virtually no community for this game. If you want to play against a human, bring a friend.
