JUMPGRID

JUMPGRID

I’ve been waiting for JUMPGRID to come out for a couple months only, after seeing a gif on Twitter that instantly hooked me.

The gameplay, the visuals, and later the music, all struck me.

I said to myself : wow, this is going to be a masterpiece. It just clicked, and I immediately showed it to everyone in my social cluster.

Playing it now, I can confirm that JUMPGRID doesn’t disappoint these high standards I had set for it, and even goes further than that.

The gameplay and level design are just amazing. For some levels, I was just dying over and over just because I was in awe, just sitting there in front of such a carefully and meticulously crafted game.

In JUMPGRID, you control a diamond that can move to an adjacent node in the grid as fast as you can press the key. Your movement wraps around so if you’re on the leftmost node when you press left, you’ll travel to the rightmost node. Your goal is to collect the cubes on each node while avoiding obstructions. These obstacles will scroll, swing, collapse, and expand, forcing you to learn and react to the pattern. Each of the levels are short but very challenging.

The twitchy gameplay and quick reloads mixed with the electronic music, and minimalist but flashy visuals lull you into a trance that could have one of two effects depending on your mood. If energetic, it will likely help you grasp the pattern subconciously. If fatigued, it might grind your will down to the point where you’re grumpy and annoyed. This dichotomy is at the heart of my experience with JUMPGRID. I enjoyed this game a lot, sometimes too much. I was so intent on defeating the challenge in front of me, it never even occurred to me that I would benefit from a break. Instead, I would keep retrying a difficult level, vaguely aware of my increasing carelessnes. This, in turn, would frustrate me – ensuring a vicious cycle.

After almost 20 hours of playing this game, I find it in 3 words to describe it.

Marvellous, Exciting, Enjoyable.

Oh, you read that right. Those 3 words summed it up.

[GRAPHIC]

Okay, thing is, this game is really enjoyable. But how it is enjoyable? First the retro vibe and simple graphics are already mesmerizing. I mean, in this age now, how many of us can still enjoy some good old-school style game. This one does, so it’s great!

 • CHECKED!

[MUSIC]

Music wise, absolutely catchy and melodic. Sure, it’s a bit repetitive but old-school games are like that. Plus, it’s not some dull and boring musics but rather, it fits the gameplay very well. Personally, I like it. And importantly, it brings me back to my younger days when I was playing those NES games. So yeah, it’s cool, good and memorable.

first impressions (updated with new info):

 • great pixel art and music.

 • gets you on the edge of your seat in the way a good arcade-type game would.

 • fast-paced, no waiting around to restart your next fall.

 • a very important element (that you can go from one edge of the play area to the other a la Pacman) isn’t taught to you except as a loading screen type tip (which I didn’t see until after I’d learned it by myself), so I figured you couldn’t go to the sides at first. this made some jumps that would otherwise have been easy hat frustratingly appear impossible to avoid. I kinda wish that info were relegated to an info tab or something in the menu, rather than as an obscure tip.

Speed Limit

Speed Limit

Speed Limit is a fun arcade action game, where the perspective of the gameplay and the gameplay style itself changes every 2 levels. It’s framed as what is essentially a non-stop action movie setpiece, where if you die, then the footage is rewound, and you are placed at the last checkpoint. The controls for each gameplay style are very responsive, and the different gameplay styles are all fun to play. I think the Pseudo-3D motorcycle sections are my favorite, because of the sense of speed, and the music during those parts is great. All the pixel art in the game is well done, and very detailed. The death animations and Pseudo-3D effects are of especial note. The sound effects are good, and the music is fast paced and fits the fast gameplay very well. The game is $12CDN, and I think that’s a fair price for what you get. You get the game of course, the artbook which has some really interesting insights and tidbits into the game’s development, as well as the soundtrack. There are quite a few achievements, and some of them are really challenging. It took me roughly 7 hours to 100% the game and get all the achievements. You can tell this game was made with care, and the developers really appreciated the games of the era that the game pays homage to.

Here’s The Thing:

You are Bruce Willis but err, due to budget constraints…!! Hmm. Ahhh, you’re a washed-up action star who- no, that ain’t it either… You’re an untrained passenger on your way to going about your hipster life.

Suddenly, some SWAT team and or Secret Servicemen (because come on…) bust in on you and you’re a patsy of some sort!! So, like any reasonable law-abiding citizen, you come into a fully stocked pistol, and thus begins your unwilling joyride of awesome stunts and equally epic on-screen (and off) deaths~

Super Hexagon

Super Hexagon

Minimalist perfection.

You can only go left, go right, or do nothing at all. That’s all of the options you have.

This game pushes this minimalistic rendition of dodge to the utter maximum.

The game starts out hard and doesn’t get easier, but getting better at the game is incredibly rewarding. Your mistakes are always your own, your high score often just barely out of reach.

The game doesn’t ever let up in terms of ramping difficulty, but also doesn’t get tedious or boring.

You’ll first just have to dodge simple obstacles coming at you, then learn patterns to deal with complex obstacles, while the game just gets faster and faster.

Hey! If you enjoy short and sweet reviews, follow my curator page here! I am an independent Curator providing reviews and insights to the games that need the spotlight! Thank you! :)

Gladium is the project of Eirik Wiklund a one man developer studio and yes, the game reminded me of Domina , a strategy game where you took charge of a Ludus, training and preparing Gladiators in a management approach, where the fights were simulated. Both games enjoy the pixel art style and that’s where the comparison should end.

This is quite a difficult game to review tbh. It is a very unforgiving game, some of the bosses you will fight will kill you many times, the part that some people may dislike the most is it’s grind system to be able to defeat the bosses or even try another go at them (you gain blood points to trade for perks and for another chance at a boss if you fail), meaning that if you lose to a boss you will have to play either normal mode or horde mode to try again, making the game VERY repetitive. You will also earn gold to unlock new equipment, which is necessary to try different strategies as you cannot fight all the bosses in the same manner (at least I advise againts it). Ultimately I’m giving it a thumbs up because I had fun the whole 14 hours I played and I even got a little addicted, the theme helped as I really like gladiator style fighting games, but be warned, if you get frustrated easily this may not be for you.

HyperShot

HyperShot

An impressive first entry onto Steam by this indie developer. I madly respect that he has realized his limitations as a new developer and not tried to bite off more than he can chew.

The controls work really well for this game (mouse to move your ship and WASD or arrow keys to fire 4 directions).

I do think that this game could use some very simple changes to make it way more satisfying and fun to play and I gave those suggestions to the developer in this first impressions video:

Overall a great game, especially for a indie game a congratulate the developers for such a great simple game, and I hope it will get more attention than it currently has.

Good game:

**It’s the first game that I feel like hunting for a position on the leaderboard. If you don’t care about leaderboards it’s still fun to just better your personal record for yourself!

Maps are enjoyable you unlock them with your score and it’s fun to explore them one after the other!

Especially since each map has it’s own track. Each track is different and good to listen to.

Also I love the small town in which you can go explore, talk to people, it creates a small home between the flights…**
