HyperShot

HyperShot

An impressive first entry onto Steam by this indie developer. I madly respect that he has realized his limitations as a new developer and not tried to bite off more than he can chew.

The controls work really well for this game (mouse to move your ship and WASD or arrow keys to fire 4 directions).

I do think that this game could use some very simple changes to make it way more satisfying and fun to play and I gave those suggestions to the developer in this first impressions video:

This game is super fun. Buy it. You will not be disappointed.

INTRO

I heard about this game from the Indie James YouTube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YdTpHlyw1s

I was immediately hooked to the music and art style, and came over to Steam and bought the game. For ten bucks, this game is an absolute STEAL.

GAMEPLAY

Everything feels smooth and alliterative; many separate systems work together extremely well and the game has been play-tested into oblivion from what I can tell. Whenever something happens that causes you to die, you feel like it’s your fault, and not the game’s fault. I can’t stress enough how important that is in a game that plays like this, and for gameplay that goes as fast as this.

Hectic and great arcade bullet hell fun with stunning graphics (with an own touch). On top of that we are also being served an excellent, pumping, synth-wave soundtrack (a couple of tracks with that distorted, heavy metal, electric guitar that we all love as well) that just reeks of what we want to remember the 80’s were like.

I have no complaints what so ever. I could understand some people wanting a longer campaign mode (yes, it was quite short and I wouldn’t mind more) but I kind of see that whole part of the game as a tutorial or “getting to know the game”. It’s in the arcade style modes that the game really shines. Trying to climb the global leader boards. Trying the characters that all feel and play differently from each other. On top of that, you are also given a good upgrade system, great controls and sound effects that do their job. What I initially thought would be a quick little fun ended up being quite addictive.

My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, ‘If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.’. Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- ‘Don’t ever smoke. Please don’t put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed. At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because this game gave me cancer anyway.

Apparently the blast zone is actually quite large. BlastZone 2 is a short indie side scrolling shooter (ala R-type but I wouldn’t say this game is that similar to R-type) made by solo developer Mat Edzenga. It features a number of different ships with different load outs, 8 stages filled with enemy ships, interesting 3D graphics and a few extra modes to try your hand at once you have beaten the main game. It also has local 2 players, controller support and costs only a few bucks.

A well-calibrated space shooter. Several ships to choose from have distinct characteristics, this adds replay ability. Very enjoyable as casual entertainment. Or, prepare to swear if you wish to make it to the leaderboards.

Very cheap game that’s a lot of fun! I’ve been having a blast playing it and trying to beat my high scores. If you’re looking for a game that’s easy on your wallet, then you should try it out! Fun to compete scores with friends too.

Izanami’s Dream Battle

Izanami’s Dream Battle

First off, I personaly don’t think that this is a game for newcomers, but it’s cheap so why not give it a try.

That being said, Inazami’s Dream Battle is a well made “bullet hell” game with (from what I seen) 4 playable characters (yeah, not 3 as description says). Those have some variety in shot type and bombs but I din’t had time to try them all yet.

Story is ok, I believe there is one or more references to Touhou Project.

The patterns are quite tight, especially on highest difficulty setting and for some might be undodgable without some basic knowledge from playing other Shmups beffore. Good news for new players, there is abudance of (9) bombs - those clear the field of bullets and deal some dammage to enemies (best used when you are cornered / can’t move freely anymore). For more seasoned players, yes you can decrease number of those.

Izanami’s Dream Battle is a cute parody game in the bullet hell genre.

Backstory

Izanami has become bored with sitting around the house and being shut in. She does, however, have a group of friends in Eione, Florine, and Lauressa. Together they decide to show Izanami a magical stone from their homeland. The stone has the power to turn her thoughts into a reality. This enables Izanami to bring excitement to her own Danmaku (bullet hell). Izanami is determined to take over the moon and to make that her reality.

Jet Lancer

Jet Lancer

Contrary to some people’s belief, this game is way more than just “LuFtRaUsErS cLoNe”. Not only because these people are severely brain damaged, but also because aside from them being 2D flight games, they really don’t have THAT much in common.

Sure. You could say that, in a way, Jet Lancer is basically “Anime LUFTRAUSERS”. But some people just don’t give JL the credit it deserves. Especially when they accuse the devs of straight up stealing another game’s code just because It’s the same genre as it.

This is actually a review written at 20 hours playtime, I just let the game idle by accident.

FIRST AND FOREMOST: If you are the kind of user that wants to use the 2 hour window to try the game and refund if you don’t like it, then take a pass on the purchase, at least until you’ve done some of your own research/watching; the early game is the most bland part of the game with easy, unaggressive enemies and not much plot development since it still is laying out what kind of personalities the characters have. It doesn’t pick up until about 7 missions in when you finally have some loadout options to try and a boss to fight, along with more advanced units in missions afterwards.

SWARMRIDERS

SWARMRIDERS

An extremely simple yet difficult twin stick shooter that starts and ends with intensity. You’re an unamed person riding on a flying motorbike firing backwards into an endless swarm of what appears to be pink lit alien spaceships. You don’t seem to have a destination seeing as you never really look forward to see where you’re going and kind of just speed into an endless abyss of black, the only colors being your bike, your bullets, and the swarm’s pink lights. What are they? Who are they? What do they want? Whatever the case may be, it’s all irrelevant as they ALL want you dead. Your goal is to obviously shoot as much of them as you can and avoid running into them. There’s only one game mode which is as you guessed it: Endless mode. But even with just one gamemode, it’s quite the blast.

Awesome and very highly paced game with head banging music to boot.

Looks like an easy game " RIGHT"

Ah don’t be fooled LOL, 1st 2 Ach’s quite easy to nail,

then you need to hit the 120 and 150 sec mark to get the last two :D

I had a bit of a time obtaining the 120s mark and was thrilled when I got it.

Had to stop playing a bit, because the game was driving me crazy in a pleasant way :D

Went back to it in the right mindset and finally cracked the 150s barrier that I so desperately wanted to do :D
