Summer in Mara

Summer in Mara

Being up front the game has a lot of issues. It won’t teach you basic mechanics and it is very easy to get frustrated with quests due to a lack of information. There are some side quests that you are given that you cannot complete because you don’t have access to certain items yet. However the game never mentions that you will later get access to those certain things if you progress the main quest which has led to me looking everywhere for certain things only to learn that I have to progress the main story to gain access to them. While this isn’t outright a bad thing, I personally think it is poor game design to tell your players to get a certain item, while they don’t have access to that item yet.

Wild Season

Wild Season

Played the game enough to get to the end of the first episode, the devs have their priorities way out of order, coupled with the fact that they clearly bit off more than they could chew, and you have Wild Season. The game we’ve all been waiting for. I found myself waking up, watering plants, then going to sleep until the next day, rinse and repeat. There’s really nothing else to it than that, sure you can go mining (the levels on the mine repeat themselves occasionally, including all the crap you left on the floor) but you cant use the ores to make anything like in HM games, you just sell them for next to nothing, better off spending money farming. Animals are broken, you can buy a chicken, and yes it will eventually lay eggs after it’s happy, but you can’t incubate the eggs, they disappear the next day, so if you want multiple chickens you have to keep buying more, which is against the point to begin with, you would never see your money back from that.

| Disclaimer: A key was provided for me to beta test the game and write an honest review |

[/olist]

I would like to apologize for my previous review, to those who aren’t satisfied with it and to those who doesn’t agree to what I wrote. After spending more time with this game, and figuring out a few stuffs, including how the save system works I’ve decided to revise my review, and hopefully this will correct my previous mistakes.

  • Plot – The story starts slow, it does take time before you see how it unfolds. The first part is quite too long for an introduction, you’ll be reading many dialogue lines before you could get your hands on the game and start playing. You can see notification on the right that you have completed a quest, but there is no actual UI that shows what your quest was or what your current one is. But there is a journal that shows your progress instead. So far as I’ve noticed, there is an event or happening at least once each day. So other than taking care of your farm, you’ll have something to look forward to the next day.

Honestly I felt the game went for quantity over quality with the concepts and characters. I’d pay 4.99 on this, but I regret spending 9.99. The initial game “Our Personal Space” was very adorable and I thought about the game well after I stopped playing, which is why I caved and bought this. It’s obvious a lot of effort and care was put into this game, but i think if it would of taken longer and the team gave more time to the development, it would of been a much more well rounded, in-depth game.

Overview

Full disclosure: I am married to one of this game’s developers! That said, here is my honest review.

I feel that this game fills a really excellent niche that I haven’t seen much elsewhere. It delivers a mix of visual novel, simulation, and choose-your-own-adventure elements, and provides a fun what-if romp filled with parenting decisions, space colonization struggles, farm management tradeoffs. I’ll go over some of the main elements below.

Overall

We’ll start with the overview, then get into the details further on down.

Flower Shop: Summer In Fairbrook

I have to be fair about this game. So I try to play it simple. It is a dating sim or visual novel, whatever term you prefer. It isn’t exactly bad - but it also isn’t quite good either.

The story in short, you and your girlfriend break up at the start of a three month semester break. Your father is upset about you being a slothful , negligent and superficial way of life (what also was the reason your girlfriend was using to coerce you). So he puts you into his car and drives you to your uncle, who is a rural farmer. You have to cope with this, and your uncle … you might fight against those things and befriend other girls, or you see that your dad, uncle and girlfriend might be right and develop some reason.

My rating: 3 / 10

This game has cute anime graphics, not so bad narrations for a visual novel (but also lack of voice acting), additional bonus in a form of “economic” mini game, and 5 different endings. But that’s unfortunately all that’s good there.

First issue is that the game is very short - you just need a few hours to finish with all the possible endings and all achievements to collect (which are only 5) - after that the game loses any replayability value.

Secondary, the whole relations system that is used for different endings is a little “unnatural”. There are two relationship counters: personal relations (changing based on your dialog choces, and your “characteristics” in areas connected with specific female characters you meet, you raise by just spending time with any specific person. You can max-up all the personal relations quickly, but to get to any relationship ending you need to balance some strange “interconnections” between characters, that depend on some simple numeric thresholds to be reached for the “pair” of characters, after which the ending starts and you cannot stop nor change it in any way (besides loading earlier saves - my advice: save at least once every game week!)

As a fan of Visual Novels, I for one, was ecstatic when I got the chance to play this particular VN. It’s one I’ve sort of been lusting after for a couple of years now, so you can bet that as soon as I got the opporitunity to play the full thing, I took it.

This VN is sort of like a typical stat-building YN; you might have to try to guess who which stat is for, but if you spend enough time with each of the guys, you’ll be able to tell based on their personalities. And not only that, you need to help Susana, the owner of the flower shop that you’re helping out, with the flowers. Every morning you tend to them, and it’s up to you, the player, to decide which strategy to use.

Much like Summer in Fairbrook, I bought this game on sale, and yet still find it difficult to recommend to anyone, other than those firmly commited to the genre.

And much like it’s predecessor, Winter in Fairbrook leaves much to be desired.

To say the game is bad would be like saying a small piece of chocolate cake is bad (assuming that you enjoy chocolate cake). It’s still cake, it’s still good, but it is grossly unsatisfying.

The writing leaves much to be desired. Very much like Steve in the previous game, Natalie is a vapid, ignorant, immature, petulant, and lazy girl, who is instructed by her parents to find a job over the holidays, in the hopes of teaching her some discipline (They had already cancelled her cellphone due to bad grades, and are now threatening to take her new car away). Luckily, her room-mate just happens to be Clara from the previous game, and she sets Natalie up with Susana to work in the flower shop.
