Farming Simulator 2013 Titanium Edition

Farming Simulator 2013 Titanium Edition

At the time of writing I am in at 1200+ hrs. The extraordinary thing is the title is a bland, no bells and whistles sim.

So what’s the attraction?

Initially, starting with 1 paddock on the stock map and a small amount of equipment provides an impetus to do what farmers do. Plant, reap, sell, expand. But it doesn’t take long to learn the quirks and the cash points so “expansion” and accummulation of wealth becomes kinda pointless soon enough.

The scenery can be special, the fields and textures quite mundane. Equipment modelling is very nice. The AI can be quite stupid at times (but I couldn’t imagine playing this without them) and it’s got a definite farm feel. On it’s own, it might get 300-400 hours to dedicated tycoon-sim fan.

Now that the new Farming Simulator 15 has come out, its high time to write down my personal thoughts of 2013 Titanium.

This is a game sim about running a modern farm. You get 2 maps to start with, Hagenstedt and Westbridge Hills. The game started off with Hagenstedt, but more content and Westbridge Hills was added later in the Titanium upgrade.

So what do you do at your farm?

You grow crops, manage ure animals and do missions to put it simply.

The crops that you can grow are: Wheat, Barley, Canola, Sugar Beets and Potatoes.

Verdant Skies

I don’t know how to put my feelings into words right now. I found this verdant little gem by chance as I browsed YouTube. One immediate bonus I noticed was that it looked like games I love such as Stardew Valley while containing its own unique flair. I’ve adored laid-back little games like this since I was a teenager and got hooked on Harvest Moon: Magical Melody. Beyond the initial premise, one thing reeled me in, making me seriously consider purchasing the game. Rosie. My first reaction was “Wow, a blind mechanical engineer? AWESOME!!!” Finally, a character in a video game of my preferred genre that I can relate to! That’s not because she’s a mechanical engineer, but because she’s blind. Although not completely blind, I do have a moderate visual impairment which can make some games a bit tricky. This ties into the second reason I purchased this game. Everything looked so big and vibrant, easy to do and easy to find. It’s for this reason that I purchased this as my end-of-semester present rather than Kynseed, (though I intend to buy that later). Naturally, I was nervous sinking $20 into a game I’d found on YouTube of all places. However, I am happy to inform whoever is reading this that this game does NOT disappoint!

Really, really wish Steam would allow “Neutral” or “Informational” reviews.

Verdant Skies is a really interesting game that’s actually not that good but I put 30 hours into it anyway for a few reasons. The gameplay is really pretty shitty but it has some wonderful ideas and mechanisms and perhaps most importantly for my typical reader, it’s really committed to making a farm sim that goes above and beyond in terms of race and gender. If those things are important to you this is definitely worth checking out, but if you need high polish and deep gameplay first and foremost it’s probably not for you.

Greetings fellow gamers…

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!

Now that I have your attention, let’s get to the why..

The primary reason I am no longer an advocate of this product is that back around April 25th, update 1.1.5 was released. This update fixed a few bugs, mostly changed some features. But they broke what I consider a intregal part of the game. You could no longer sell bails. Several consumers reported it within hours of the release. About 21 hours ago a representative of IceFlames finally acknowledged this issue and stated “It will be fixed in the next patch or sooner”.

I started off absolutely fucking hating this game. I literally had to do everything, step for step, that a farmer would in real life in order to farm. Yes, sure, the hint is in the game’s name, but still - I wasn’t prepared for just how freaking much it would require from me, probably because I’ve never played a Farming Simulator-type game before.

Playing the Story Mode (the mode this review is based on, there are others) meant ploughing, sowing, fertilising, and irrigating fields, and then waiting, and then harvesting. There’s a lot of driving up and down fields, and to and from various locations around the map to fetch stuff, deliver stuff, buy stuff.
