CountryBalls Heroes

CountryBalls Heroes

For this review I’m considering three things:

  1. this is a new game (so bugs are expected)

  2. the developers are indie so they might take longer to patch and update the game

  3. if this game is on your radar you probably enjoy polandball/countryball meme comics.

So, I want to start off with the negatives. Nothing I hate more than reading through a review, getting hyped for the good, just to see some stuff that’s a deal breaker for me. We’ll start off with bugs/design issues:

SAVE GAME BUG

Probably the worst bug in the lot. It basically makes saves a pointless feature. Basically, if you load a save game all/most of the settlements disappear. They disappear from the map, from the quick bar to the right. Essentially destroying your save.

As an old Heroes 3 Fan, CountryBalls Heroes was a must buy for me.

Graphics are nicely drawn, animations are ok and the music is nice too. Nothing spectacular, but not bad either. I like the basic idea of HOMM 3 meets political incorrectness and the game has humor and charme. I got some chuckles here and there.

The gameplay is 100% HOMM 3, but a bit simpler and more shallow. You build your base, ride around the map with your hero, fighting for resources, producing more units until you’re strong enough to attack the opponent.

Lucky me gets to write the first review for Lostria.. I think? I feel like this is not the full, proper game, but a beta test, but this is unclear from the store page exactly what you’re getting into. For that reason, in an exception to my general rule (in fact for the first time in over 5,000 Steam reviews), I’ll invite the developer to correct me if I’m wrong about my observations and opinions about this game, because it does appear to be completely free, which earns developers a large amount of goodwill.

Guardians of Greenheart

Guardians of Greenheart

I am appreciated for the high-difficult enemy that required careful planning to ensure victory with minimum cost. The art is beautiful and the story is straight to the point.

However, over the first hour of my playtime, the grinding has became too much. In the very first battle, you will be pitch against a big bad enemy that can one-shot (in which it did) your character should you had not debuff them. Beating that big bad was hard, but that okay, no problems.

However, when that very same kind of big bad which would reappeared in the next dozens of battles, the game became too much monotone and boring, for by the 3rd battle, you have already mastered what combo should you use.

Pangea

Pangea

Distant future. Research spaceship faces with unknown physical phenomenon in a faraway space.

The outcome is safe - the spaceship manages to overcome the anomaly without visible consequences. Though, on arriving to the Earth, the crew discovers it not the same way, as it should be. It seems, the anomaly represented a point of contact of several parallel layers of reality, where the events were happening a little bit differently. When the spaceship went out of the anomaly, it appeared in another layer of reality, not in the same when it got into the anomaly.

In that reality the Earth was not affected by a meteorite, which killed dinosaurus. Giant reptiles remained the dominant form of life, and mammals were poorly developed. As the result - the intelligent life and signs of civilization appeared much later, and by the current moment the society is on the level of Stone Age.

Primitive tribes and dinosaurs, magic and futuristic technologies are waiting for you.

In the “skirmish” mode you have to find and destroy the other players bases. In the campaign, you must complete the mission task.

For each victory, new unit types will be unlocked.

Pangea is a hybrid of turn-based strategy, tabletop game and roguelike. Heroes' moves across the playing field are determined by dice rolls. Turn-based tactical battles take place in a separate hex based arena.

  • Explore procedurally generated maps full of prizes and dangers

  • Enjoy colorful tabletop game styled graphics

  • Lead 4 unique factions with their own set of units and structures: a warlike primitive tribe, guardians of the forest thickets, terrible monsters and highly developed aliens from a parallel world

  • Influence the playing field - change the landscape, construct buildings and set traps

  • Unlock many bizarre creatures and lead them into battle

  • Uncover the secrets of the Pangea world in a story campaign

Knight Dice

Knight Dice

Is a good tiny game to kill some time :) Difficulty wise, is not really difficult if you are “lucky” with the combos and take your time to see wich is the most convenient dice to roll. Mechanical, is quite simple: You have a number of dices and you have a number of rolls per round. One dice per roll, appart from the main start of the round where all your dices are rolled. There are some curious effects (as poison) but i’m not gonna name them all. Is better to discover for yourself :P But let me say that generally you want to defend the incoming damage with shields or armor dices and put as many damage in the round as you can. You can get combos depending on your starting class and getting some along the way. Some of then are very powerful, like an aura that envenoms your enemy once every round (that’s at least 1 extra damage every round until the enemy is dead :D) You have 3 different colours in your dices. Golden, purple and normal gray. Some combos require colours to be enabled and that side of the dice is probably that have a normal effect (it counts as both at the same time, so 2 birds with 1 dice) For example, if you have a combo that need purple and shield, and you roll a purple shield, you are lucky because you can enable that combo with a single dice !!! Is really addictive but the game is very short. Worth the price tho ! Give it a try :D

Wow, nice original idea! The first few level was easy, after 20+ things are getting trickier. Love that there are so many combos, replayable.

Definitely recommended.

Monster Sanctuary

Monster Sanctuary

This game is totally worth it.

If you enjoy the monster-taming formula from games like Pokemon (and others), but wanted it to be a little more “meaty” in terms of strategy, then look no further!

Why this game is great:

  • 3 v 3 battles. This makes it so team dynamics are important. Instead of each individual monster needing to be a powerhouse of some sort, you can have monsters focusing on a variety of roles, damage / tanking / buffing / debuffing / etc. Playing around with team compositions is really fun.

I would not recommend playing this game with a guide until you’ve finish the majority of the story - I feel that the exploration is part of what makes this a great experience.

I don’t write reviews very often, but I felt that this game deserves some merit that makes it stand out amongst it’s competition.

Initially I thought Monster Sanctuary lacked depth, as the first biome and battles felt slow and didn’t have much to choose from - I think it took about 2 hours to get to a place where I could appreciate the level of quality that this game presents.

Ruin Hunters

Ruin Hunters

Ruin Hunters is a turn-based tactical game where players must lead a party of three heroes. Wander into the deep of the dungeons, defeat enemies, gather treasures, while your party grows in power.

Features:

▪ Turn-based combat (position your heroes, and choose the right skill for attack or defense)

▪ Use the environment (use it for cover, attack, or just simple push the enemy to it)

▪ Level up your heroes (learn new skills, talents)

▪ Momentum points (some skill generates points, some needs points to cast, but when the hero reaches the maximum momentum, he will be able to perform stronger actions with the skills)

Everpixel Tactics

Everpixel Tactics

A fun alpha that I expect to have a good future.

Currently completely lacks any kind of option menu, has a limited UI, and an assortment of minor annoyances and game breaking bugs, with limited gameplay.

Not recommend for people who want a full game or a bug-free experience.

The game is somewhat a cross of Battle Brothers and Final Fantasy Tactics, though with no plot.

The difficulty curve is very high and balance is not great.

Current Bugs:

Game breaks during combat sometimes while stuck on AI units, once while on a player unit.

Magic skill says same words as melee skill, that it increases melee.

have to click random till you get a build you want on your first dude.

needs work, may be good latter.

Shows great promise, as I posted this review a few days ago, and the developer is going to make customizeing of your first guy, because of this review.

seems like if you have a good idea for the game that will clearly make it better, and mention it, they will implement it, thats gold.

Ill mention a bug, sometimes adding people that have the skills needed for a qwest doesnt change percentages, and then they get “Phantom stuck” in the slot makeing it very frustrateing.

Monads II

Monads II

The second work following ‘Monads ’, released in 2019.

About Series

‘The ensemble about loneliness.’

Inspired by classic SRPGs, “Monads” is a trilogy series that adds the charm of the story of colorful characters intertwining with their own views and worries to battle rules represented by tile-based turn-based battles.

This series is basically a ‘Tactics’ game. Among the various characters, You can find the effective combination for each stage environment, and the same character also have different powers depending on which abilities you choose within a certain constraint. In addition, there are various levels of difficulty, from ‘Beginner’ to ‘Legend’, to play games according to your preference. Anyone, ranging from users who want to appreciate the story without burden to strategy game enthusiasts who love special challenges, can play this.

Characteristics

There are three main characteristics that distinguish ‘Monads’ from other games that look similar.

  • First, units “retreat” before they die if enough damage accumulates. a parameter named ‘Will’ decreases depending on events in battle, such as being damaged or friendly units being removed. This will make the unit retreat easily. Of course units can die, if you don’t give a chance to retreat and do a lot of damage. In this case, the vestige remains in the tiles and lowers the will of the surrounding units, regardless of if it is friendly or not. These will require deeper thought as the difficulty increases. And ‘Will’ also affects ‘Morale’, which is a shared resource needed to use Ultimate skills.

  • Secondly, it has the rules of puzzle game in macroscopic view. No random, so same behavior always leads to the same result, and you can revert and try different actions whenever you want. While encouraging new strategic attempts by players, the frustration from mistakes is intended to be minimized.

  • Finally, we completely ruled out meaningless repetition. The fastest way to grow a character and gain new abilities is to just follow the scenario. But players who enjoy new attempts and challenges can retry former stages with all characters. There is no reward for repeating same play, but providing additional skill points from higher difficulty reflects the ‘aesthetics of challenge’, core intention of this work.

Scenario

Player will follow the path of the group divided into three groups.

  • Lucius, a typical hero who lost everything overnight in a conspiracy but tried to fight back and defend justice.

  • Deus, a mysterious sage who was considered the savior in part I, but tries to turn the crisis of being deprived of the means of counterattack and drifting abroad into an opportunity.

  • Noel, the head of the Royal Guards, who is on the side of the empire to make the world one, desperately hopes that this war and sacrifice will be the last tragedy in history.

Unlike the first part, in which each figure was in charge of a chapter, two conflicting characters per each groups are in charge of the narrative. However, it is the same that characters from different backgrounds, thoughts, and intentions influence each other and create a flow of events. We tried to give the expectations and joy of feeling the omniscient point of view of the performances of the characters struggling for the best he thought.
