Downward

Downward

There are some very good things about this game, but the bottom line is that I cannot recommend it to anyone.

The best thing about Downward, and what made me want to play it in the first place, is the explorable world, which opens up to you more and more as you gain certain abilities (the Metroidvania genre). This promise is essentially fulfilled, with plenty of environmental challenges in many carefully crafted levels. It’s wonderful to discover a new area, or to go back to an area you visited a while ago only to find new delights and secrets available to you.

File under: surprisingly great first person open world platforming/exploration game.

There’s been some sort of disaster brought about by the arrival of three planets. Almost everyone’s been wiped out, but this isn’t the type of apocalypse that makes everything look brown. In fact, once you appear out of nowhere, one of the first places you get to is downright paradisiacal.

The land you’ll get to wander around in is divided into large, intricately designed areas, all beautifully rendered and most of them boasting a great eye for verticality. Your next goal is always marked, but you’re free (and encouraged!) to go off-track chasing the thousands of collectibles littered everywhere. You could just chase the objective marker, but then you’d miss out a ton of places and most of the fun the game has to offer.

| Review | If like me you had become increasingly frustrated with the direction Ubisoft had taken with Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones and Warrior Within then Ubisoft Montreal’s 2008 re-imagining should serve as a reminder as to why you fell in love with the series in the first place. Where Warrior Within and The Two Thrones followed a dark and violent path full of frustratingly constricted enemy encounters and a tone gratingly out of sync with The Sands of Time , this reboot reverberates like a breath of fresh air, the kind of gust that makes you forget about the diminishing returns delivered by The Warrior Within and its sequel The Two Thrones

My Personal Thoughts on Prince of Persia 2008 Reboot

Let me begin this review by saying I have mixed feelings with this game and if Steam had an option to give a neutral rating that’s what I would have done here.

Starting with visuals, this game looks beautiful! It could be the most beautiful game in Prince of Persia series up-to date (we’ll see how the Sands of Time Remake stacks up against this one). The art direction is great! The music is good and the calm music got stuck inside my head, great job by Inon Zur (also the composer of Fallout 3 and 4). The gameplay is solid, platforming is fluid and works smoothly. The voice acting is very charming.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands™

Utterly Forgettable

As someone who loves the Sands of Time Trilogy, I absolutely cannot recommend buying this game. Reasons why are below.

Plot: Not much of a plot. The Prince visits his brother (huh, he has a brother?) in Azad and they have boring banter. Something something, the brother unleashes an ancient army, something something, sand monsters, something something,

! brother is taken over by an evil djinn. Honestly, I took a three month hiatus from this game and when I came back wasn’t overly compelled to restart, and I still don’t feel like I missed much of the plot, as forgettable as it was. 1/10

I totally understand the disappointment, without Mechner looks like Ubisoft didn’t find the balance, the golden row.

GOOD -

The Level Design is perfect. This is where this game really shining. It’s very enjoyable finding out all the platform elements. I think maybe a second run even better than the first. I just find it funny how all of the places nearly the same as in PoP SoT, there is a Throne Room, there is a Courtyard, Observatory, Baths, Ruins, Prison, even a Clockwork system, maybe the Library was the only thing what was missing.

SLIGHTLY IMPERFECT BUT WELL-EXECUTED AND TRUE STEALTH GAME

There are three things you need to know about this game.

1. It’s chock full of potty-mouthedness, including from the main character.

2. It is NOT a game you want to play if you like being the alpha badass.

3. It ranks up there with the original Thief games and others (skip down if this is all you care about).

I’ll address these and more in sequence in this review. It’s a long one, but maybe worth the read.

First off, as regards #1 above, if you’re too young, or if you, your parents, or your professed god do not approve of you being exposed to cussing and other adult humor, skip this game, cuz it’s not for prudes. That said, it’s all just words, put-downs, and sarcasm–only a little more advanced than the stuff that your average first-grader might hear daily on the playground or in the back of the school bus. I didn’t see any nudity or erotic content, so you won’t have to worry about that. Nobody was particularly racist, gay-bashing, etc., although masculine status does get insulted in a few spots. There was at least one subtle joke about masturbating–again, nothing that kids don’t know about already. Guards pee, and you can see the stream from any angle, but the source organ is never rendered; in fact, pants never come down, although associated movements do occur. I’d give it a PG-13 if it were a movie.

Caveat: the recommendation is intended for existing fans of the stealth genre. If you’re not familiar with espionage/infiltration gameplay, you’re unlikely to gain an appreciation for it in “Styx.” Though the story is decent, that plot progression is gated behind some maddeningly patience-trying stealth sequences, especially at the end.

Hope you’re looking for a challenge, because “Styx”, like DMX, is gonna give it to ya. Some of this difficulty is deliberate (enemies such as Knights and Elves, difficulty selections such as ‘Goblin’, mission insignias, etc). Sadly, some of it is a consequence of mixed design goals and sloppy controls/interface. What’s more frustrating than getting caught because, instead of dropping off the ledge to slip past a patrol, you instead slid across that same ledge and climbed up onto the next platform? Rather than the clever use of environmental interaction that worked in the same situation earlier, the same commands now send you on a completely unanticipated course, like some kind of slapstick scene in a comedy show. And in full view of the two Knights and elite crossbowman who had nothing better to do than hang out on the same balcony. All. Fucking. Night. The answer my friends is nothing. Nothing is more frustrating than that.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones™

This was a huge favorite of mine back when it was originally released, so in spite of my reservations about haphazard ports, I was happy when this unadulterated version was released on Steam. As far as I could tell, it seems to be a pretty direct copy of the original. The graphics have been touched up a bit, but the gameplay, content, menus, and music all remain the same as they were a decade ago. Steam has this tagged as “partial controller support”, but aside from a few things on the menu, the whole game is controller friendly.

This game is COOL,serious this game is GOOD. It takes the best from Sands of Time and Warrior Whithin and combines it in gamaplay and story. In a sort of meta narrative the game explores the aparent double personality of the Prince, that went from a likable talkative acrobat in SoT to an angry bloodthist warrior in WW, plus it’s a throwback to the mirror/shadow Prince from the very first 1989 game

While Warrior Whithin improved the combat , this game improves the plataforming. The Prince can do some new acrobatic tricks ,like sliding up or down between close walls, rebould on wooden plates that throw him at great distences and use it’s dagger to attach hinself in some specific mechanisms . The beloved wallrunning receives a small new feature too, now Prince can run in curved walls, extending the possibilities of this mechachinic that i consider the best in the series

Escape from Naraka

Escape from Naraka

I think Escape from Naraka is similar to SEUM: Speedrunners from Hell.

But In Escape from Naraka, your overall score will be tallied up from crystals and artifact collected, damage taken throughout the level, and the time it took to complete the level (No level select option)

Gameplay is great, good graphics. My biggest gripe in this game is the Enemy AI . AI is attacking/moving too fast, it FEELS like you’re surrounded and there’s nowhere to run, the only option is to fight, but you cant….kill (mostly) or outrun them (mostly).

It’s a game, jk. Only on the second level so far and the vertical section messes me up a bit since it’s possible to do by going to far in both directions. The screen moves while the character has to survive and get to the end at the cameras pace. only like $3 and it’s good I would recommend it. Reminds me of a mobile game, could probably be ported there but don’t know how.

Best game of the year so far, blows werewolf action game out of the water with this visceral experience that will have you come back and back again.

God bless Steam! I can’t stop praising it for making it possible to make new cool connections and meet people around the world with common interests. These people always remind me about some games, that I had on my mind for a long time and then forgot.

But what is much more important is that games they recommend me always fit my mood in a proper way, just like in a right place in a right time. The same happened to me with A Story About My Uncle. I had a bit harsh weekend, which started with fixing my broken PC on Saturday, then I was forced to do other stuff I really didn’t feel like doing and after all these events I felt like I squeezed lemon, so I really needed something chill, relaxing and just kind, without any violence. So, after a quick conversation with a friend on Steam, I realized, that I bought this game few years ago, I guess and still never touched.

Middle-earth™: Shadow of Mordor™

I just……. can’t really Overappreciate the masterpiece that is Shadow of Mordor- a perfectly balanced blend between visual artwork, story, combat/stealth gameplay- and the whole newly- introduced with the series Nemesis system- Yes, I KNOW it’s glitchy sometimes - but it does Not mean it’s not worthy of any gamer’s attention due to lack of attention to detail from the Devs- since, they got occupied with the sequel….

A great ARPG, with tons of Possible builds for the main character, as well as even more possible boss -encounters…… And YES the Bosses are almost unique to each player - as well as their story with those bosses….

The general consensus regarding this game is absolutely spot on.

That is to say - It’s a fun action game. It looks good. It plays good. Everything about it is decent or at least acceptable enough to give a pass mark to.

But then the games unique selling point, the ‘Nemesis’ system single-handedly raises it from good to great. Worth playing just to experience the total craziness that occurs with that genius game design.
