Savage Lands

Savage Lands

OK, I love this game and my first few weeks of owning it I could not play anything else. It has its own unique storyline and lore, The AI can be very challenging at first but you learn how to fight each type of mob you face as you progress to tougher mobs further inland on the island. You are shipwrecked on an old ancient island filled with ghost towns (not ghost) undead, mystical creatures and even Dragons. You hunt for food, deer, goats bear etc. and besides meat you need to farm skins and other things used for crafting.

This is an EARLY ACCESS Review and I’ll change it after the game is finished. This is what I think of the game as it sits.

Pros

  • The game runs great on my system. Around 60fps on max settings (Specs on my Profile )* There’s a decent amount to do. A few different types of wildlife to kill and several different baddies as well as a dragon (Though I’m not sure you can kill the dragon yet, never tried)* The game in my opinion is beautiful.

This is a nice simplistic adventure and survival game. I enjoyed it very much. It is rough or simple, but I like it very much. Actually I have played the two sequels, too. I hope for more in the future!

Quite good crafting adventure. Lots of crafting materials to gather and plenty of secrets to find. The game doesn’t look like much from the screenshots but it’s pretty good. Fighting mechanics could have been a bit better but it’s not bad. It is not a farming sim like stardew valley. It’s a crafting RPG. You pretty much get all the crafting materials instantly .. just lying around and respawning quickly. You kill enemies by swinging your sword. You can craft better weapons and armor as you get deeper into the game. Does not have hunger or similar mechanics for survival so the game allows you to take your time exploring. Looks like a mobile game ported to PC but keyboard or even controller should work ok with something like Joy2Key. Not bad for it’s price. I’m looking forward to the other games in this series that the developers have lined up for 2021.

Alchemist’s Awakening

Alchemist’s Awakening

As of May 4th 2016, my recommendation is buy on sale.

If you are a fan of supporting early access, indie games and open world sandbox keep an eye on Alchemist Awakening as it looks very promising with a unique spin on the inventory, crafting and ability to give life to your builds. Other than that at this stage it’s pretty standard for an open world sandbox…explore, gather then get creative.

Experience

To start my journey I opted for single player to get my bearings. Having a cougar pet immediately was awesome. But then I had no idea what to do so started destroying things ːDː. It’s a bit trial and error without a tutorial but there is a short series of Quests that give the basic concepts of how you can use the alchemy screen and tool ‘Make Useful’ to turn resources into useful products as well as gather elements from them. The rest is basically exploration, gather, and build with no story to discover. I read that this is something to be added in the future so that’s another thing to look forward to.

Pros:

[olist]

  • Huge environments filled with randomized interactable objects.* Lots of materials and elements to mix and play around with.* Remarkably nice visuals that make exploring and building a fun experience.* PvP Multiplayer with the ability to protect your buildings from other player’s attacks.* World consistency for all players.* No levels or unlocks whatsoever, everything is there from the start.* Ability to create your own customized character.

Muspell

Muspell

This is indeed early access. Only buy if it’s half price or you want to play through a very rudimentary Minecraft clone.

In just 20-30 minutes (using a controller):

  1. Can’t invert the Y-axis view - that makes it almost impossible for me to play.

  2. You can’t tell what anything is, there are no tooltips for things in your inventory and no indication of what you’re looking at.

  3. Basically I figured out how to dig up the ground but that was the only thing I could figure out how to do other than wander around (looking up when I meant to look down :) ).

Congratulations to the dev team for this amazing game. I cant wait to play it much more!

The game has a very cute design and theme to it. While my initial recommendation remains unchanged, I would like to see some more polish. I am happy and thankful the dev was so quick to respond to a review for their game and look forward to seeing what future changes brings for this game.

I will likely wait for quite a bit more to be added before I give it another shot.

–- Response to Dev

Being a developer my self I of course mean no harm in my criticism. And that is the point of the review process, if the items above were addressed I’d be happy to remove them from my critique. Tho I no longer have the game to test my self, I’ll likely wait until some more updates come out before I give it another shot and update my review with anything I find at that time.

Survival RPG 2: The Temple Ruins

Not very different from the first game in the series - ‘Lost Treasure’. Has some more crafting materials and more grind though. I liked it as much as the first game. The controls are ported over from the mobile version of the game so it pretty much feels like you are playing this game on the mobile. But as a fan of crafting and exploration RPGs, I don’t really mind that.

Citadel: Forged with Fire

Citadel: Forged with Fire

Ok, so at the 4k mark I guess I can make a constructive thing again, two parts, first what we have and second, what we could have.

So here’s the short and sweet on why I don’t recommend the game: how they advertise vs actual product that’s the issue. With that out of the way here goes what we have:

A grind fest, with infinite resources. Sounds a bit contradictory doesn’t it? Well if you’re the most powerful clan on a server you will have infinite resources as long as you bother picking it up, that’s upsetting the balance quite a bit in general since unless you have the 24h-no life attitude you will not in anyway manage to compete or even just survive. They will have the gear, the resources and all the tasty goodies to smack you at any time and you can suck it up, or quit. Which mean people quit. The best way to fix this would obviously be to make the world bigger so people could migrate away and come back, instead of migrating to new games.

This game had HUGE amounts of promise and was extremely fun in the beggining. So much fun that I actualy made 3 level 60 characters and keeps for all three of them. Its EA and there are bugs. The blue isle team was diligently working on them for a while and then things turned sour.

There are roughly 3 reasons people want to play this game.

1- The building of bases and fortresses.

2- The flying

3- The pets and dragons you can tame and ride.

Reasons 1 and 2 were completely amazing untill one of their Dev team whom I will call Eggbert, decided to completely change the dynamics of gameplay to totaly ruin the fun that they had once generated for every one. Apparently Eggbert thought that flying slower than walking speed would be fun for every one, but before that the speed was exileratingly fast. Good job Eggbert, you have singlehandedly ruined Flying.

Alek - The Lost Kingdom

Alek - The Lost Kingdom

Updated opinion from edit is at the bottom.

Great Concept, I have played 11 hours in and I still want to play. However, the game just crashes now and it’s because of a bugged out Hunter. He doesn’t hunt unless you interact and close the menu, if you make him quit the game crashes. I lost 10 minutes of progress which turned out to be a lot of stuff being done in that time span. It’s fustrating to have an incompetent NPC that carries a heavy liability to cause crashes.

I sent a couple of the crashes not sure if the Dev received them. With this problem I am held back from progression in the game. It won’t matter if I do another save because the bug can just happen again.

Here I am back for another game review!

Today I’m covering elements of Alek - The Lost Kingdom.

This is a charming little adventurer simulator that centers around Alek (the PC). In this game you build up and manage village settlements, ward off attacks, and help develop a land. Now mind this game IS only in Early Access at the time of this review. That being said it has a lot to offer. Now I know some of you are going to look at my play time and say “But Relmara! That’s hardly enough for a fair review!” The only reason I haven’t logged more time in this game is because of a nasty bug that kept me from loading an old game and starting a new one. Here is where I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. Dev. Blackmeyers has been VERY hands on with us early access player when regarding bugs. I know that working out such issues is laboriously hard. I have never had a dev. respond so expediently to an issue. It’s very heartening to know that we have someone so invested in their player base working to helm the game.

Astral Terra

Astral Terra

As of May 22nd 2016, I would recommend on sale or bundle.

Unless you are a true sandbox & survival fan that finds joy in all.

As the store page says, it is alpha and if I had the chance to experience it before i owned it, I would probably wait at least 6 months. The developers are very active and always listening and pushing small updates with fixes and improvements. I think another 6 months would be a huge difference.

At first…

When I first saw this game, it reminded me very much of Landmark and when I created my first character and saw the Drow, I immediately went back to memories of EverQuest. After selecting my race I was sad there was not any other options, but I read that character customization is planned.

Review

Here we have astral terra, an early access game that is far from finished. The bad news is that there are bugs waiting around many a corner in its current state. The good news is that there is the foundation of an enjoyable game here. Things will only get better as the game is updated, but it is only fair to consider this when deciding whether to jump into the game today, as opposed to waiting for a few more updates.

To start with, the worlds look very nice. when you begin a game, you choose a ‘seed’ by entering a number. each number will take you to a different world. They have everything covered from desert to snowy mountains. I haven’t felt the need to adventure too far in an individual world, but they feel large in scale.
