The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

Just finished the game. And, I plan on going back in for New game +. Because, you know… gotta do something til part 3 comes to PC.

First, If you’re new to the series, I recommend playing the first Trails of Cold Steel before this one as this is a continuation and you’d be missing out of great story and character development. Also, your clear data from the first game works with this one if you want to start the second game with a bonus. I actually got into the entire story from playing the Trails in the Sky series, but I don’t think its required to play before this one.

After the Sky games I never thought I’d actually be giving a negative review to one of these games. But after slowly becoming more and more irritated with this one I have to acknowledge that the Cold Steel ones, or at least the two we have, really aren’t as good as their predecessors to the point I’d frankly recommend against buying this one. I enjoyed the first one well enough, but since it leads into this one I wouldn’t get it either.

I won’t say any twists but this does give away the general plot of the game, if the description up top didn’t, so click away if that bothers you. I’ll also be mentioning a twist of the last game, but I assume you played that if you’re reading reviews for the second one.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV

Good conclusion to the Cold Steel arc. The trails franchise is my favorite JRPG franchise, and this game keeps with that. Structurally, the game is sort of like Cold Steel 2, with a lot of wandering around Erebonia with no fixed base for a lot of the game.

By now the series has a lot of characters and plot arcs, that are a bit unwieldy at time, but it works pretty well. My only real grips is the forced character choices at times (normal for this franchise) and that there’s guest characters whose gear you can’t change, even if they were in your party and you gave them better gear previously. I hate seeing characters I gave top builds to just toss that away and be outright mediocre later on when the game gives them fixed gear and orbment setups that just don’t get it done.

If you love continuity in games then this is the game for you. The build up of playable and non-playable characters (love them or hate them), the world, and the story throughout the series was phenomenal and really hooked you up for the next chapter in the series.

Armored Xpress

Armored Xpress

Armored Xpress is a new unique story-driven Match 3 game built with rich RPG elements.

Embark on an extraordinary journey with Armored Xpress Agent 117 and MECH as they set off to deliver a top priority package all while fighting dangerous pirate gangs hired by the villainous “Defiant BOB”,  who by the way has put a bounty on the package. To traverse through Sector 2 a region on the planet Entriga, the Armored Xpress Company felt it necessary to implement a more protective measure. “MECH”  an advanced military grade delivery robot which can be equipped with an array of weapons and items allowing agents to defend against hostile threats. While delivering packages you can choose to help the towns people through various side quests which can unlock special rewards.

In combat Armored Xpress MECH uses energy from supply crates that are matched during play to power its weapons and systems. Weapons are available to fire  at specific power levels with a maximum of 4 levels. You can strategically fire each weapon at will or wait until they are at their maximum level. This strategy allows you to reserve a weapon or unleash all the weapons at once for a truly devastating attack. Each supply crate matched with its corresponding color in groups of 3 fills the matching weapons power gauge. Supply crates matched with more then 3 of the same color generates a special care package crate. When broken these crates drastically boosts the corresponding weapons power gauge. Items and other abilities are powered by MECH’s ability gauge/ABG system which fills over time. Sequential matches in a turn generates a combo which fills the ABG faster allowing you to use abilities sooner.

  • Story-Driven campaign - Help Agent 117 deliver a top priority package through perilous hostile region.

  • Active Time Battle system - Actively battle your opponents without waiting.

  • Fully explorable world - Explore a detailed and engaging 3d world.

  • Full array of weapons and items- Purchase and equip up to 4 weapons onto MECH. Use restorative, supportive and attack items to your advantage. Equip various accessories for passive abilities.

  • Unique Bosses and Enemies - Faceoff against colossal bosses and a host of devious enemies that use different abilities and attack patterns that can be affected by in-game world events.

  • Experience based leveling system- Earn experience points from battles and quests to level up MECH.

  • Quality - Armored Xpress is a premium game with no pesky in-app purchases here or ever.

WARMACHINE: Tactics

WARMACHINE: Tactics

Short version: Don’t believe reviews older than March 2015. The game is better, prettier, and more stable than ever before. It still might not be for everybody, but it’s worth a look.

UPDATE: August 2016 - Updated spell effects, all new UI, somewhat improved AI, and generally very attractive and stable performance. This is how the game should have released, and more updates are on the way. I can recommend it still.

Long version:

I’ve been playing since Early Access, but wanted to wait until the last of the Kickstarter DLC was released before writing a review. In the meantime, I’ve watched a nearly unplayably buggy game get lots of fixes and polish from the developers, and now I feel like it would be fair to give it a balanced review. APRIL 25, 2015

As a Tabletop/War Gamer in general and especially a Warmachine/Hordes player, someone who followed WMD when it first announced a Warmachine game and a backer of the later Kickstarter-Project I truly hate to say that I can’t recommend this game. The developers had enought time to fix some major bugs or design flaws, but they didn’t. Performance issues are still at hand: if your game kept running for a respectable amount of time without a crash, than that just means a crash is a soon-to-be occasion. Not a “possible” occasion, a crash -will- occure. The UI is quite obnoxious, but usable, and keeps looking like a developing kit.

ALTDEUS: Beyond Chronos

ALTDEUS: Beyond Chronos

A warning, this is a Visual Novel, not an Action Game.

For players wishing to learn how to find the different branches, there seems to be, in general 4 Heroine Endings, each with Good and Bad, and after each ending, the start screen will display a silhouette of the “heroine”’s ending you unlocked. The first 2 times you play the game, you will unlock “extras” in the next playthrough, so Ending Meteora will be the first, after that, you will be capable of unlocking the second branch for Endings Noa and Anima, and after any of them, you unlock the ability to open the final branch, to the Coco Ending (Final).

Real player with 36.7 hrs in game

This is the best VR game I’ve played so far this year and the #1 VR VN I’ve played to date by a long shot!

The first ending is around 3 hours in but it’s more like a prelude. The full game has about 15 hours of content to get all the endings and each branch adds huge swaths of story and character development so you really feel compelled to play through them all. There are also a couple music videos built into the story that you can go back and revisit any time which gives you some reason to boot up the game every now and then even after 100% completing it. Music videos in VR are awesome!
