I am writing this review due to receiving a free guide. I’ve played lots of RPGMaker games and several Aldorea games. Aldorea games are enjoyable but they usually stick to their game mechanics with each game which i personally don’t like. To explain: The biggest peeve i have with Aldorea games is that they hide way too much stuff; areas, rooms, gear, items, money. This leads to 2 problems. With such a large amount of hidden things they force you to buy the guide to be able to get a complete game experience with their games forcing more money out of customers. The other thing this leads to is searching every nook and cranny which quickly becomes boring and tedious. Not to mention a huge amount of unnecessary wear on a controller. Another thing they tend to do is have random encounters which becomes frustrating because it ruins your ability to explore. While exploring you are frequently thrown into battles and when its over your left with remembering what you were doing and what you have already done. They do this mostly with their earlier games. The last thing they tend to do is allow missing during combat. What makes the combat enjoyable is being able to implement strategies but it screws off your carefully planned strategy when your big killer blow that would drop them misses and since they are still alive they swiftly proceed to kick you in the nards and now you are taking damage and what not when you had a solid plan - this to me takes out most of the strategy for the player and is frustrating and annoying. Even after all that they are still enjoyable games for the money. I mean, how can you not have fun. I have been playing video games since pong, com64, asteroids, i was there. All that time, my first and last love has always been old school turn-based rpg games and I really love RPGMaker games. These kind of games have it all- Exploring and dungeon crawling, character and party development, cool equipment, skills, and spells to create a party to your style, quests, adventure, and you even get a story and often enjoyable music. I believe that the only reason that you wouldn’t have a good time is that for whatever reason you decide you don’t want to because even though during play there are some things I don’t like I always have a great time. Don’t poo-poo on old school RPG games and RPGMaker games, they are always fun and if you don’t like them, I think it’s more on you than the games. I really hope that Aldorea and all the other RPGMaker game developers continue to keep pumping out games forever. Even though they can improve they still put out very enjoyable games. I appreciate all the hard work that they put into what they do. I have talked to the developers and they put their hearts and souls into these games, earning a living doing what they love. My hats off to all involved. These games are inexpensive and a great value for the gaming hours to price ratio. Love it!!!

Asguaard is like paradise for everyone who loves to explore!

The story is very nice. Asguaard is a land of dwarves and fairies. A wonderful place, but now in danger because the Pandora Box has been opened and seven plagues are about to destroy the land. Only a human can save the world and the dwarves manage to summon even two of them, Glen and Rayanne. Accompanied by the faithful dwarf Grom and a little unicorn they set off to find what’s necessary to prevent the worst from happening.

If I should choose one word to describe Asguaard, it would be HUGE. Huge world maps and huge dungeons with many many secrets to discover. There are countless Hidden Locations (on the world maps) and Magical Rooms (in dungeons or villages …) to be found and if you explore thoroughly you’ll be well rewarded.

Valiant: Resurrection

Valiant: Resurrection

This is a nice game which I have just accomplished. I have beaten Rhuagh and brought Mira back to life.

The game is full of quests and side quests and the story line is nice. The only drawbacks is that when we beat all beasts and enemies in the games (the general ones) they show up again if we leave the place and reenter. This should not happen in my opinion. I also think the game could be much shorter than it is. Maybe it was too long for me because I decided to go for and accomplish almost all side quests.

Valiant: Resurrection is the story of a man who falls in love and right before he and his bride are to be married she falls ill and dies. You then journey across the world to save her.

You will meet many different characters and that will constantly ask you for favors. Some small tasks and some requiring a little more time. This is a good way to find gear that can help you out throughout the game. You can also buy better gear in each area you visit.

Like all RPGMaker games there isn’t much more to the graphics than the old school 2D look. It doesn’t take away from the game though. Story was decent and interesting at least. Only issue I really saw was spelling and grammar would get bad in some conversations. The worst of it was at the end of the game. This also doesn’t really take away from the game but it is something I have to point out and probably should have been checked over better.

Knights of the Chalice

Knights of the Chalice

While I recommend this game, it’s with the caveat that you understand that this is not a ‘Zone Clear’ game. Unless you use the tools put into your hands AND get lucky, spend excess time traveling the areas and picking up XP if you want a good bit of cushioning between your characters and the power level of the bullshit that will be placed in your path.

The orc fort, as has been mentioned elsewhere, has a fucking dragon halfway through the area. Even though there is a contingent opportunity that you can pick up some dragon-slaying arrows, they are not guaranteed to kill the damn thing and your level will be too low to fight it head on if you have followed the story path.

A work of Art

For the longest time I refused to buy this game. It looks just like Ultima 6 but that was a game from 1990.. It also plays very much like the game but with tweeks and rules from the beloved 3.5DnD. With that being said, I don’t think this game will sell well. 20$ is an outrageous sum.. It needs to be 10$. Only die hard fans of 3.5 would throw their money at this at first glance. I understand that some developers are artists, and this is worthy of being art. If the developer can afford to do this, then I guess that’s fine. However, they are missing their chance to expose their art to thousands of people who enjoy the old school. I don’t think they realize that there are hundreds of similar games that are either free or for half the price. So when people see that price tag they will pass it up as I did. As I said, I refused to buy this and probably would never have. In contrast, when I heard that some of the quests were based on classic DnD modules that I enjoyed, I forked out the cash.

Super Crystal Hunter

Not a bad little puzzle/action game. I love the mini games, but wish there was a way to pick which you played as they are unlocked, instead of random each time.

Not sure if I am sold on the difficulty being longer levels with higher point threshold, but it’s an impressive feat nonetheless for an RPG Maker game to look like this AND have such variety.

The Good:

  • Short download time

The Bad:

  • Unskippable text / cutscenes

  • Horrible hitboxes, both for catching gems and in mini games

  • No explanation of gem values to let you score better

  • Some characters don’t have portraits when you interact with them. It just says “NPC” instead

Not worth it even on sale.

HOLMGANG: Memories of the Forgotten

HOLMGANG: Memories of the Forgotten

Every legend has a dark side. Twenty-two years before Dragon King’s reign, an empire emerged. An empire whose single aim was the annihilation of life. Relive the tragic days of the Shadow War.

After the death of king Haziel of Draken, his son, Hazulem, proclaimed himself emperor of Dracorum. Through the invocation of the First Hierarchy demons, he imposed its reign of terror all over the planet. Experience the story of a group of ill-starred heroes that decided to make a stand and change the course of history forever.

Fight like Kandar, the barbarian, Tatsu, the ronin, and Valentia, the Amazon woman, and defeat the dark secrets of Emperor Hazulem. Reclaim your honor and take your place within the legends.

Holmgang is a hack n’ slash at its core, and each character will have their unique combat style and executions. Besides, you’ll be able to craft your own combos in the combo editor and evolve each character’s skill tree, to make the experience truly unique and personal. During the game, you’ll face different enemies with different behaviors, weapons and weaknesses, so your gear and combo configuration will decide if you’re victorious!

In Holmgang, you’ll explore the world of Dracorum by land and sea, finding friends and foes along the way. Some of them will give you quests or sell you unique items, but others will try to deceive you. Choose your path wisely, because there’s not only one, and some of them have intricate environmental puzzles that could lead you to a certain death. Besides, each main character will be able to access secret areas, with rare loot. This adds a high replayability factor, like any good old “metroidvania”.

Remember, there’s no one right way to play the game… so experience them all!

The visual art style of Holmgang is defined by a balance between soft watercolor surfaces with stylish ink touches on borders and details. An artistic mix that tries to reproduce hand-made paintings. While created in 3D, Holmgang uses several techniques that sets it apart from other games.

The music is another strong pillar, and has an orchestral epic style. There’s a theme for each character, defining the emotions of the heroes and changing with the action of the game. Beautiful melodies with great orchestrations, epic drums and multiple emotions is what you will hear in Holmgang’s soundtrack.

Season of War (Alpha)

Season of War (The story of the past) — a complete reinterpretation of the classic Adventure.

Expressive presentation of the epic plot of Season of War, unusual and colourful action, music and pleasant graphics in the game will allow you to spend time with pleasure.

The plot of the game!

live together with Antonizar the history of his formation and Glory. Together with your colleagues, having passed through severe trials, create a Hammer guild, save Engelm, uncover the plot of Morhrok!

RPG-arcade action game!

The Season of War combat system has no analogues. This is a proprietary development of the SinorCreate team!

It is represented by a combination of conventional shooting, typical for arcade games, using the abilities and individual techniques of the heroes, which is typical for an RPG. Juicy and bright effects and a well-thought-out balance of forces complement the energy of the fights! Each character is played absolutely differently. And the pace of the battle will only add emotions to the fight!

An expressive game world!

In the Season of War locations, you can feel a piece of the soul of each of the development team! There are no identical locations in the game. As the story progresses, the world changes from dim to brighter.

Epic Bosses!

At the end of the chapters of the game, you meet with Bosses. Each of them is unique. Everyone has their own story and motives.

Gilbert:

For the greedy Gilbert, only money and power are important. He is ruthless, cunning and swift. But Rastor is also not a miss. His techniques are powerful. But only the skill of the player can decide the outcome of the battle.

Islock:

Stop the naive and arrogant Islok. Save the magician from the consequences of rash actions. Fight him in his illusory world.

We are not standing still!

The game is not ready yet. But we have already released 13 updates, five of them are global.

We have reworked the Gameplay, Graphics and partially the Plot!

Adventure Time: Finn and Jake’s Epic Quest

Adventure Time: Finn and Jake’s Epic Quest

What time is it? It’s review time. I’ll get right down to it: this game sucks. At first you think it’s going to be fun playing an exploration game in the vein of Adventure Time, but it’s anything but fun. The “look for stuff and backtrack” design of gameplay is just tiresome by the 2nd world map, and by the 3rd, you just want it to be over and done with. The first Toe Jam & Earl game for the Sega Genesis had a similar feel and look, but was loads more fun.

Not very challenging since you can easily avoid most enemies. Also disappointing that you can only level up to level 15, and as a result, you don’t feel very powerful when defeating enemies.

This is a long review so if you just want a brief summary of why I recommend this game skip to Results and read from there.

NGD Studios does a great job bringing Adventure Time to the video game world with this epic hack ‘n slash adventure. Adventure Time: Finn and Jake’s Epic Quest is a fantastic game that mixes the great elements from RPGs with the awesome level schemes of ToeJam & Earl.

Story:

Adventure Time: Finn and Jake’s Epic Quest takes you out of the Land of Ooo and throws you into a new world that splits Ooo into floating islands. You play as Finn and Jake as they find themselves in a video game, which they use to explain all the weird elements. BMO has gone missing and it’s up to you to bring him back, but where is he? As you progress through the game you receive clues that help you find your lost comrade. In order to solve the mystery you must find artifacts scattered throughout the worlds, and eventually you will find the key.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Epic Battle Fantasy 4 (EBF4 for short) is the fourth installment of popular jRPG-esque series

that originated as web browser games. The series is basically a parody of famous Japanese RPG games (mostly Final Fantasy). If you want some more preview on the older games, I suggest you read my review on previous game, EBF3 (which is also on Steam), if you haven’t already.

But to keep things short, I’ll just give you a small preludium:

the series started as free browser games that were made for fun and played to kill some free time, and even EBF4 itself can be played via your browser, but there’s also an expanded, paid version (AKA the one I’m reviewing now), and it’s not exactly cheap, 11,99 USD. Some professional games cost as much, and thus, the game will be judged like one.

Well first let me tell you that I have followed the series on Kongregate while it had only released Epic Battle Fantasy 1 and to be honest the first and second game wasn’t that great but then the third instalment came to the series and it changed everything becouse it had absolutely everything an JRPG could offer for a flash game.

I played Epic Battle Fantasy 3 about 5 to 10 times and when beating the game it gets a bit repetative so I usually came back for it every other month or so. Even when I had played it 9 times it was still as fun as it was the first time I started the game. But years passed and one day in 2013 just before I was about to turn off my computer I just wanted to check my Kongregate and there it was, Epic Battle Fantasy 4.
