Greak: Memories of Azur
|
Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.
|
Is this game a masterpiece? Yes, in the end I think so, but it does have some irritating design choices as well - this is no run-of-the-mill platformer!
The game takes place in the lands of Azur, which is mostly overrun by an Urlag invasion. It is a single player platformer, but you will control three siblings with unique abilities during the game: Greak, Adara and Raydel. While playing only one of them, gameplay consists of jumping, climbing brushes, swinging on vines, diving, killing (respawning) mobs with your sword, fireballs or crossbow, collecting items, and talking with the few remaining inhabitants of the land. You can double jump and dodge roll, and you learn new fighting abilities, like an upwards thrust or a smash attack. Adara can glide through the air with her dress and reach places Greak cannot, she can also hold her breath far longer than her brother. The third sibling joins them later in the game and is very strong… but can’t swim. As long as you only play Greak, the game is nothing special, but as soon as you have found Adara you have to alternate control between them.

The Fall of Balance
The Fall of Balance is a VR, fantasy game focused on Colossal boss fights, each with various mechanics, like climbing, character Skills, and others. Although it can be easily compared to Shadow of the Colossus in VR, many gameplay elements make it unique. You will have to trick the giant Guardians in order to climb them and search for their vital spots.
The game is mainly centered around boss fights, but Easter Eggs will be a huge part of the game too, hopefully creating a great and strong community for The Fall of Balance.

Troll and I™
Before this game, I had nothing. My family threw me out on the cold, summer streets of Chicago. All I had was $5 in Walmart gift cards (yes, multiple) and my desktop PC in hand. Although this game cost more than $5 and this is not Walmart, I somehow managed to acquire a copy. That’s when my life changed for better or for worse. When you’ve hit the lowest point, there is nowhere to go, but up. Troll & I was my, “up”. This game is an emotional journey from start to finish. The relationship between the player and the troll is reminiscent of the brilliant character development and relationship displayed in Michael Bay’s Transformers™ franchise between Optimus Prime and whoever the hell Shia LaBeouf played. Never before has a form of media touched my heart like this game has. Thanks to this game, I cleaned up my act, my family took me back and my wife forgave me for whatever I did. I’m still not really sure, she gets pretty irrational when she’s angry, I’m not gonna lie. If you were hesitant to buy this game, because of the low reviews, do it anyway. For your $30, more or less depending on the seasonal sales, you will gain a deeper understand of yourself, those you care about and trolls. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you may or may not experience minor gastrointestinal discomfort. Troll & I is truly the perfect video game. If you’re a fan of Super Mario 64, Dark Souls and/or Jimmy Neutron Attack of the Twonkies for GameCube (I haven’t, played the other versions, but I really enjoyed that one. I also hear the version on GameBoy Advance was pretty good.) you will love Troll & I. 5/5 Stars. HIGHLY recommend!

Troll and I has a bit of a reception for being a notoriously bad game, and while it is indeed a game, I don’t believe it deserves the low reputation it has; far from it. The game tells the tale of a forlorn teenager named Otto, like the bus driver in The Simpsons, and a monstrous looking eponymous troll as they work together to return back to their families. You fight, solve puzzles and collect secrets through beautiful Scandinavia while the villain Nico and his men hunt the troll down. It isn’t just man that threatens you, it’s also the diverse nature hazards and the hostile mountain goblins that use a variety of weapons to hurt both you and Troll.

The first thing I noticed when starting the game was the pixel art. The hardcore pixel art. The closest good game with a similar visual style that I remembered was Songbringer. You have to like that style, or you won’t like the game. I liked it.
You play a Lord of an impoverished fishing village who decides to lead his people into a brighter future in a far away land. He doesn’t get very far. A terrible thunderstorm and a giant whale sink the ship, the villagers drown or get caught by the natives, and Lord Faraday is rescued by an old man and brought to a small island where he meets a bunch of desperate castaways. Here the adventure starts and the old man transports Faraday to different islands to explore and search for three magical keys to open a door that leads back home.

FULL REVIEW
So I’ve finished the main part of the game which took around 6 - 7 hours according to my steam playtime, definitely didn’t feel like that (which is a good thing). I’ve still got a few more achievements to go, which should give me an hour or so more of the game.
Story:
I’m gonna be honest here, After the initial intro and such I wasn’t really paying attention on what was happening in the story. It’s fully subtitled and I missed a few, so I was kinda out of luck on knowing what was fully going on.

Ravva and the Cyclops Curse
I’m pretty surprised by the potential with this game. It’s pretty short, say an hour for a run if you take your time? But it’s got a bit of replayability to it if you’re going for the achievements or a high score. Once you’ve learnt the game (And you’re going to have to because it’s a pretty tough game until you learn patterns and timings.) the way you play is quite different.
Your first time, you’ll be best served taking your time to scan for secrets with the yellow eye shot and nabbing powerups and spare lives while you progress through the levels. The time limit is generous to the point where it’s rare you’ll hit double digits even combing each level for hidden things so there is no rush except for the sake of points.
! Speaking of which you’ll need 500,000+ of them by the end of the last level if you want to be able to find the secret ending.

Played the game through on Normal Mode on stream and beat it. Here’s my thoughts.
First off, props for the pre-game menu. Being able to set your screen size, VSynch and controls from the start help. I recommend VSynch btw for this game. The game is well-designed: graphics are as expected, gameplay is smooth and responsive, and the game captures well in OBS (for those of you looking to make content for the game).
The tutorial is actual kind of fun, it gives you the information you need without dragging out the time. The acutal game has the appropriate amount of difficulty curve, you won’t feel overwhelmed at the amount of enemies or the timing of the traps. A high amount of secets will let scroungers have their fun, but the game is also perfectly paced for the speedrunner.
