Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan is a pacifist, pokemon-esque game with visuals inspired by old rubber hose cartoons and/or Cuphead. I would recommend playing with a controller.

The game was very fun and easy to play, the game also offers varying difficulty settings to make it easier if need be. I really enjoyed the battle system and the creature collection. For how few levels there are, there are quite a few creatures to befriend. Each of the creatures have two designs, one black and white and one in colour. I like the edgy look of the black and white designs better personally, but the colour designs look alright. You can level up your creatures only twice, but each creature has a backstory that’s revealed through levelling up, so there is a bit of content in those two level ups.

The adventures of Rainbow Brilly… sorry, I mean Billy, is one that very few people can’t relate to in some way. Whether it be from the semi-nostalgic art style, being a mixture of Paper Mario’s style and a lot of classic 2.5D games, or the various mini-games that count as “actions” for you to find, it’s hard to deny that this Rainbow has a color for everyone, even if it doesn’t seem quite in your spectrum.

For the positives of this game, I’d commend it’s simple, yet still interactive style of puzzles and encounters or “confrontations” as they’re called. Your objective in almost every fight is to color your opposition’s world; and I said opposition instead of opponent because there’s not really that many characters that are outright antagonistic as their point. They’re trouble souls, just like you, and your way of combating their gray outlook on life is to talk to them and use the support of your other friends and /their/ other friends to help them realize that there’s more to life than just one shade.

This is a really fun little game! I think i got it in a bundle, and it has become one of my go-to games when i only have a few mins available to play. The games are quick, animations are cute, easily worth the couple dollars price tag.

Cute, funny version of good old Battleship. The little cakes react to what’s happening on the board, and the various avatars (you can pick yours, the opponent gets a random one when playing against the AI) also have their own reaction. Makes me smile. :)

The background screen is also interactive, stuff happens when you click on it. Overall very playful, friendly style. :)

You can play against an AI with 3 difficulty options, and there’s the option to play against someone on Steam, worldwide, or LAN. I just tested the worldwide one so I can finally post this review, and it was fun. :) (I lost.) There’s a 30 sec timer per turn, that resets when you hit a cake. (I wonder where I can enter my name though, it just said ‘Player’, while the other player had a name shown.)

Nexomon: Extinction

Nexomon: Extinction

This is the best monster catching game I have ever played!

In case you only read the first line I want to stress that point more than any other. I tried to keep this review spoiler free. Just in case this a spoiler warning. I have had SO MUCH FUN playing this game and I want to make sure people wont miss out on this experience. Nexomon is as far from being “Just another Pokemon clone” as you can get. I will include some information for those who are undecided about Nexomon Extinction.

Now there are some similarities to other monster catching games but that is sticking to the genre. You need locations to heal your Nexomon. You need people to battle and strengthen your team. But the Nexomon team have included many unique elements to their game that I feel truly sets it apart from other games.

Nexomon: Extinction is a Pokemon knock-off, but a fairly good one I think that does enough to distinguish itself and make it worth a buy.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay of Nexomon Extinction is very similar to the main-series of Pokemon games. You go around the world battling Nexomon, of which you have a team of up to six on you, each of which has up to four moves. It’s not completely identical though, there are some minor differences. In battle, rather than having PP, moves all have a certain stamina cost which use up some of your Nexomon’s stamina bar. Personally, I prefer this system actually, first it’s a bit more realistic, for what that’s worth. It is also a bit more strategic since there is a drawback to using more powerful moves. They use more stamina, and that will limit the amount of moves total you’ll be able to use. There are fewer types than in Pokemon, also (9), and there are no dual-types. One thing that I quite liked was that you had a choice of 9 starters, one for each type. If anyone’s curious I picked the Noki when I played through the game, though I was torn between it, Mara, and Lume.

Costume Quest 2

Costume Quest 2

Costume Quest 2 is a sequel to the extremely fun and interesting kids' adventure embodied in the original Costume Quest. While the story of Costume Quest 2 is meant to continue on from the first game, and is meant to embody the same style, I would say that this sequel is not quite as strong as the original.

I am an extreme fan for the first game and still really enjoyed this game, but it definitely has some big weaknesses. Note that I played both of the games back-to-back, so certain details stood out even more than they might have for years apart.

I received this game as a gift from my brother who basically trained me to love games like this since I was young. So when I got the gift [set] of Costume Quest 1 & 2 I was excited. I started playing this game pretty shortly after I completed Costume Quest, and the main difference for me was that instead of using a keyboard to play, I used a playstation controller. Any issue from there on out was a transitional one for me. I would have to say though that I did like the controller better than the keyboard - which is one’s own preference. Anyway, a couple changes that I’m sure many reviews have covered is the way that you attack the monsters. Instead of a leveled bar with the specified “go” space, it was like a narrowing target which initially appeared to be impossible to successfully attack with. I am not great at explaining this, so would encourage anyone to see if you can find a youtube video to visually show the differences. The three main adjectives used to measure your success is AMAZING (which is the best), NICE (which is good, but could’ve been better), and WHOOPS, which means that you totally mistimed the hit. Not to mention that throughout the game Corvus will provide different attack strategies and teach you them throughout the game, which I’d honestly prefer to learn right from the start. My only other complaint is the Candy Corn, which other than for defensive purposes was utterly useless. And the constant commentary whenever it was the Candy Corn’s turn was annoying as well. One thing that really irritated me though was that one of the achievements for the game (which is the ONLY one I didn’t get) was that you had to play all battles throughout the entire game with the Candy Corn present. Which, as I noted earlier, would be frustrating when trying to beat a particularly difficult opponent, but also annoying. However, that didn’t mean that I didn’t intend to do it. The problem with that is, on occasion there are a handful (or less) of monsters that kind of pop out of nowhere to battle you, and throughout the game you’re switching costumes to utilize the different in-game talents. I had intended on battling every monster with Candy Corn, but got caught unawares by one of those monsters, which totally messed up my chances of actually getting that achievement. Maybe the next play through I will aim for that.

Entodrive

Entodrive

Entodrive is a Pokemon-like adventure that I’ve grown fond of over my 3+ hours of playing. The one person development team is very active, with weekly updates indicating what was added/changed, as well as what is in store for the next update. As the community is relatively small, any feedback you have will be read and considered as part of future development, it’s a fun experience!

The game is still in an alpha state and is enjoyable as-is. It’s well worth the price if you are prepared going in that there are unfinished aspects to the game, and crashes will happen from time to time. Thankfully the game has a robust save system and is very quick to boot up and resume your progress. I also enjoy the music a lot.

Intro

Japanese Romaji Adventure is an educational game that is teaching you romaji, the Japanese language that is written in alphabet. Set in the 1800s, you are to travel between regions in Japan, trying to explore what the country has to offer. Note that my knowledge of Japanese only comes from watching animes, so this review will be based on that.

Abomi Nation

Abomi Nation

I’m still in the midst of my first run, but I adore the charm this game has. The combat is very enjoyable, and there’s a decent challenge even on the normal difficulty setting. A big selling point is just how customized you can make each run. Difficulty, permadeath, which Abomi join you, all of it can be influenced at the start of a new run, and the game very much encourages you to play it multiple times. No two runs are going to be the same!

The cutesy style of the game greatly contrasts with just how dark this game can get sometimes, though. There’s regular references to death, dying and killing, and your team members actually talk about it when somebody dies. It’s not the most complicated game - if you’ve played any recent Pokemon title, you’ll grasp this game pretty easily - but it’s good fun, and each trek on the island is a brand new adventure. I’m very impressed that this was mostly made by one person! And we’re getting new Abomis every now and then, too, which adds to the fun! I do look forward to what might get added to the game in the future, but for now, I think I’m going to go ahead and hop back in!

A good concept for a game but poor execution. The design aesthetic itself is not a problem, but the naming conventions and designs are… inconsistent and kinda cheesy. The gameplay is slow and the framerate is bad so the game feels like it takes forever while you’re not even accomplishing much. Fights are very matchup dependent which means they snowball based on who is your lead Abomi and the typing chart is unique so you really need to learn it before you attempt the game seriously. The UI is kind of shoddy and requires a lot of button presses and doesn’t allow for mouse/keyboard play which is odd for a game released for PC.
