[東方二次] Senran Meisuishu Tactics / 戦乱命萃酒タクティクス

Senran Meisuishu Tactics is a turn-based SRPG where you move the Touhou girls under your control over a playing field and defeat monsters or other hostile Touhous. It’s solid in its gameplay, there is a big character roster and a lot of content with the two campaigns (youkai and human version) that the game includes.

For youkai version, I had to throw in the towel at mission 13. At least for human version, I’m still going strong at mission 18. The latter is more casual and more balanced in its difficulty, I recommend you start on it.

That’s the second Touhou doujin game on Steam (well, third if we count NitorInc, but it isn’t full yet), and, even if this one isn’t as good looking or polished as The Disappearing of Gensokyo, it still plays good, and looks at least servicable.

This game is apparently a pack of two scenarios which were sold separately in Japan before it came on Steam. Kinda explains why this game is relatively expensive, which might seem jarring when you look at the screenshots. But that’s not important. What is important are mechanics. Those are heavily inspired by two powerhouses of Japanese tactical RPGs, Fire Emblem and Super Robot Wars, and work well. There’s the classic Weapon Triangle, and two more for damage modifiers. There are eqippable abilities, enchantable weapons, Supports (or rather, as they are called in the very Engrish manual, “couplings”). And various MP-powered abilities, for some resource management.

Paladin Dream

Paladin Dream

Paladin Dream is a turn based RPG in the style of all the old favorite classics. You play as a Paladin going on a journey to find out the meaning of a dream he has been having repeatedly over the years. He leaves the abbey where he has spent his entire life and heads out to find the reason for his dream.

The game was made with RPG Maker, which I know, can leave you questioning how good it really is. But Paladin Dream is a pleasant surprise. With about five hours of gameplay and original music composed by the creator, Paladin Dream stands out where many RPG Maker games may leave you wonderful what the heck you just spent money on.

The tag for this game absolutely should have contained RPG Maker. Seemed decent on the surface with story and game play.

Not really my cup of tea, seems extremely short and balance is jacked up. I beat the game, and here is a quick summary:

  • decent music, don’t know if it is from rpg maker or they made it

-decent design (art) , don’t know if it is from rpg maker or they made it

Very short game, beat in about 4 hours

-half of that was probably grinding to try to overcome the balance

-level 15 cap

A truly amazing fangame. Now that it has been translated into english, it would be a shame to not give it a try if you like Touhou or turn-based tactics (or both!).

Art is great : character sprites and models are well polished and nice to look at.

Music, as in any Touhou games, official or not, is really important. The team behind this game made great effort to adapt our favorite TH6 : Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil into modern remixes and it really sounds great. I’d definitely get the soundtrack for my personal playlist if I could get my hand on it. It’s that good (for those who played it, I’m talking “Fantastic Danmaku Festival” quality level in terms of music)

I like the remake of EoSD. I never would have thought a bullet hell would come to turn-based combat.

Kings of Israel

Kings of Israel

Great PC adaptation of the board game. Set up works for multiple players only if sharing the same device; play can be split between two players (1 prophet per player) from what I can tell. So far I’ve only played solo. Love the Bible study/trivia option!

EDIT: On the standard play mode, I have now reached level 5 (Saul), which increases the number of prophets involved to three. I personally take about 20-30 minutes per game (unless I lose in the first ten). Based on the settings available for the Custom game option, it looks like there may be as many as four prophets in play at once. In Custom mode, you can also choose which prophets are in play, whereas the standard play-by-ranking mode assigns prophets at random. Definitely recommend playing in Custom or Bible Study mode if you don’t want to affect your level ranking status! Bible Study mode provides both good and bad consequences to your multiple-choice response, making it worth cracking open your Bible (or clicking the online Bible links provided) for the right answer. Highly recommended to you if you like turn-based games, strategy, and fun ways to engage with the Holy Bible!

From a secular perspective, it really depends on what you are looking for in a game. This game is rich in its representation of historical content, if you accept that it is based entirely on the Bible. It makes extensive use of RNG, which I understand is not popular among many gamers, but is a very appropriate way to represent human behavior. Not that it is random per-se, but in life humans will often either surprise you, or at the very least the number of things they might do is so varied that trying to make a specific prediction in a moral-political context is not likely going to be accurate. It really feels appropriate to have so much RNG in this context, but there is a little you can do to maximize your output. In short, this game uses mechanics that are generally not very popular, but in a highly appropriate manner for the subject matter.

Touhou Genso Wanderer -Reloaded-

Touhou Genso Wanderer -Reloaded-

Touhou Genso Wanderer -Reloaded- is, like it’s basic description says, roguelike RPG game the puts the player into various dungeons and gives them the outright scenario to overcome these dungeons and its enemies. This review will contain cover multiple parts of the game, from graphics/interface to the entire story itself and a bit of the DLCs. Spoilers will surely appear but I’ll limit them as much as I can..

I want you to cut the long review and say your general consensus!

Ran with almost no thermal stress on an i7-6500U, HD 520 graphics without ever crashing, so it should run on anything better than a potato.

Like Touhou? Like Shiren the Wanderer or mastered the Mystery Dungeon games? If so, buy this. However, if you don’t know anything about Touhou whatsoever or know how to play Mystery Dungeon games, you may want to skip this. The game does include a tutorial that covers most mechanics and has a very, very thorough bestiary, character guide, trap guide, etc., so it’s just a lot of reading to understand the gameplay and story if you’re new to it.
