Rat Prison

Rat Prison

I got this game from a pack of keys, it is very bad. There is no goal is this game. You do the tasks and then you wait for 5 minutes until the day passes. The controls are super annoying, having to use the mouse, WASD and arrows. So in short: Do not buy this, I could honestly make a better game in 2 days.

Rat Prison is a 2D retro pixel side scrolling adventure game with an unusual premise and an unusual interface. You’re a guard in a dungeon and you have to juggle keeping the lights on, checking on the prisoners, and not being killed by rats.

It’s certainly an interesting premise for the game but the implementation is lacking. You have to use the mouse to play (well, just the mouse wheel, no other functions of the mouse do anything in the game, which is a bizarre and unfun decision), and the keyboard to move left and right. If that sounds like an awkward interface, well, it is.

Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles

Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles

To describe this game, it is a tribute to survival horror games of old and plays similar to them, so just a bit of warning as to what you’re getting into. Having grown up with these types of games, I enjoyed the experience and would recommend this to others. As of my writing this, only the first episode has been released, so the review will cover that.

First, we need to talk about the camera. We have fixed camera angles that will move from one location to the next as you reach the edge of the screen, somewhat obscuring the room by giving you limited view, similar to older Resident Evil games before they went over-the-shoulder action. However, with the exception of only a couple rooms, the angles are very well placed to give you information about the room while not completely hiding an enemy within it. If you look around upon entering a room, there will be clues as to what lies in wait for you, so be aware that if you are the type of person who just rushes into everything, you may get worked over.

Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles is a pretty direct sequel to Outbreak: New Nightmare, which is a primarily multiplayer based game. Lydia - a character from said game - is the only playable character in Chronicles. Unlike the jump from Outbreak to Outbreak: New Nightmare, Chronicles is on the same general engine and plays out pretty much the same. So, if you enjoyed New Nightmare, chances are you’ll definitely enjoy this game, as it’s essentially a single player version of the multiplayer title.

What’s better than one shit game for 20$? 4 shit games for 20$! But let’s dig a little deeper and of course spoilers ahead.

First of all the dev advertises this game as a second person view of a horror game and as a “New kind of fear!” but I don’t fully believe the dev understands what second person is. When you play a game you usually have 1st and 3rd viewpoints where you either play as the character in 1st person or you play as someone who is viewing the character (Usually over their shoulder) in 3rd person view. A 2nd person game would be a game where the game is narrated to you and instead of playing a game you would be setting up situations where the game would then tell you the player what happens. Think of a choose your own adventure book or, better yet, an instruction manual where the writer is telling you what happens and what you need to do. A more confusing way to explain it would be saying you are viewing your character from someone else’s 1st person perspective. Anyways I digress, this is just a 3rd person game so let’s continue.

Hiking Simulator 2018

Hiking Simulator 2018

Kind of pretty in spaces. You can play either seeing your character or with a first person view. At it’s dark heart this is a hiking sim filled with mountains to climb, trees to see, and cute little bunnies. Aw. Too bad the bears hate you. So do the wolves and boars. Most of the animals are dangerous, but it’s more that type of game.

I didn’t like that at first, but amazingly you can outrun charging bears and wolves. Ditto the boars, though those suckers will chase you. I hit the statue that shall hereafter be called Freyr’s temple and got chased.
