Sable

Sable

Sable is an incredibly enchanting game. Those who love self-paced exploration in a lovely open-world environment should not miss it. The artwork is striking, the OST by Japanese Breakfast is lovely, and there is just enough story and dialog to thread it all together.

This is a coming of age story. Played from a 3rd person perspective, you guide a young girl as she explores the world to choose a profession. There are collectibles, quests, and a host of landscapes (natural and man made). You travel by glider bike but can get off the bike to climb, run, jump, and glide. Some of the structures have puzzles which generally involve figuring out how to access all areas or collect quest items. The game has a very simple interface which is easy to use and provides a single area to view inventory, quest progress, maps, and settings.

This really is neat little game. I say little, because in the current crop of openworld-games this really did feel little. The scope of the overworld and do’able things and quests, all feels manageable. I didn’t feel like I had to visit a million points on the map, or find 1000 “jembies” for different powerups all the time. Although it’s not completely devoid of this stuff.

I in particular liked how the UI is almost exclusively context based and doesn’t overstay its welcome when it is not needed. It’s just Sable and her world. That seems like a simple mechanic, but I really appreciated the clean screen.

First Light

First Light

First Light is a first-person survival psychological horror game tinted with body horror, set in a remote cabin in the dead of winter. Explore the cabin and its surroundings, examining items and collecting cassettes to piece together events of the story. Told from two perspectives of the past and the present, you need to know both to survive the powerful forces hunting you.

Play as the SAR officer, Eli, sent to rescue a distress call sent three days ago. Live the past events as Ben, while his fiancee Julia searches for her grandfather, whom she hasn’t heard from in weeks. Meanwhile, an ancient creature of famine and gluttony stalks silently in the wind and snow.

The fates of all involved unfold throughout the night, while Eli must prepare to escape at the first touch of dawn.

  • Explore the cabin and its surroundings for clues.

  • Collect cassettes to tell the story from another view.

  • Outwit and outrun the creature hunting you.

  • Survive until the first light of dawn.

First Light is heavily influenced by spooky greentext stories, innawoods happenings, and a lifetime of lore and love of creature features. A big special thanks to Chass and his curated content for the spark that led to the creation of the game. Please check him out if you like stories like this, or to get an idea of what First Light’s roots are.

Forgotten Hope

Forgotten Hope

Forgotten Hope is a fairly short, linear adventure about a girl exploring her memories. A very small team has created a retrospective journey that is worth taking. It is played from a first person perspective as you follow a white wolf. Other than the wolf, you are exploring an ‘empty landscape’ and the narration is in the form of your memories being ‘thought out loud.’

There is a lot of narration and, when it is displayed/spoken, your progress is slowed. Thus, if you are looping back through to pick up missed items, it becomes a bit frustrating. I grew tired of listening and ended up making my second pass through the game in silence.

“It’s Not About Money, It’s About Sending A Message!"

Story driven game set in a beautiful, peaceful world developed by a small group of people, 3 guys to be precise. Story is well-written not boring at all for a game without any combat actions. Gameplay is pretty much basics but it’s not the focus of this game so it’s okay. Soundtrack is really great, very well composed and it really goes along with the game as you progress. Totally worth it. Voice acting was bit out of focus for me, felt like it was forced sometimes, one thing to improve next time.

Lost in Blindness

I don’t see any reasons not to like this game.

I really enjoyed playing Lost in Blindness, this is a great game:

  • The concept is very original: you play as blind character and hence must use your ears instead of your eyes

  • Before playing I was a bit afraid the game would be too hard, but it turned out to be very accessible

  • No bug encountered during my full playthrough and the voice acting is surprisingly pretty good for an indie game

  • I played with earphones without any problem (I did not have a headset)

My final verdict: this is a hidden gem on steam, you should definitely give it a try.

The Last Show of Mr. Chardish

The Last Show of Mr. Chardish

The Last Show of Mr. Chardish is a story with multiple layers and is made up of a central framework with 5 very distinct ‘mini-adventures.’ The sound track is enjoyable and the voice acting well done.

The primary story is played from a first person perspective and is much like a walking simulator, exploring an old theater. You are Ella, an actress returning to your history at the request of Mr. Chardish (a person you worked closely with in your past). You walk through the ruins of the theater, listening to a taped interview with Chardish. You examine items lying about (collectibles) and listen to snippets of remembered conversations. You find several masks in the theater and putting on each submerges you in an adventure based on a play by Chardish. These vary in artistic style and objectives. The mechanics of each are very different, as well. Within each of 5 segments, there are collectibles that contain more recordings of conversations to build out the history of your own past with the man and the theater. The segments have different styles of puzzles with a common theme of using the environment to build your path through a surreal landscape.

Are you looking for an emotional game with an interesting story, incredible soundtracks and decent voice acting while experiencing a game with artistic and sometimes surrealistic visual graphics? Then The Last Show of Mr. Chardish is for you.

Not all games about battle royales/PVP, having impossible challenges during platforming/parkour games, etc. Story oriented games could be called a niche genre, mainly created to adults because of their deep thoughts. These games offer much lower playtime than other games while the asking price is still 15-20$+. Considering a purchase is still a valid option if you like to support quality games with a deep meaning instead of buying the 500th reskin of a boring shooter.

Overall so far this game has been an absolute masterpiece the puzzles are engaging, but not unfair. The sound track is a banger and Walter took me on a feels trip I did not expect. I absolutely love the visuals and am going to purchase the soundtrack to support the creator it’s most definitely worth $3.99. My TWO complaints are one I got 12/21 achievements and did so much in the game and still only had bad end options at the end of my first play through which was a bit disappointing after doing so much and the Arcade game Pink Style it’s absolutely the devil it feels unfair and took the luck of the gods for me to beat it once and I believe I’m going to have beat it again since I was missing 3 chips to get all the endings. The Hit box of the jelly and the mouths of those little evil turd devils IS AWFUL especially when you have to do it with a swiftness that would make The Flash Gawk in wonder at your precision and speed. Literally my least favorite mini game ever I think and the fact that’s the most disdainful memory of the game I have after having to do 3-4 of those shifty block puzzles is a feat, because I hate those two I can deal with that though if I don’t have to feed those ingrateful turd devils.

The Good

–——–

Overall - It is a very charming game. Lots to do, good amount of play time for the money and lots of variety in terms of mini games, quests and areas to discover. Also it is pretty funny in places (I laughed a few times), has many unique characters and lots of little cute pop culture references and quirky aspects - like the changing pictures each day based on time travel movies and passing references to TV shows like The Wire

This game has been so much fun. Very reminiscent of classic RPG’s that we all grew up with. I love the mystery, all the puzzles and police adventures, the story line was great and cute music soundtracks.

The developer has even put it on sale, you really cannot go wrong with this purchase. Also check out the NFT’s available. One of a kind :)
