This game isn’t terrible for what it is. It’s just not worth $3. It took me 8 minutes to complete while also messing around a little.

Gone Home

Gone Home

Sometimes I worry when my opinion on an especially beloved piece of work differs from that of the overwhelming majority of game reviewers. I wonder if perhaps I’ve missed something along the way. I think to myself “Did I play this the wrong way?” or “Was I not paying close enough attention?” BioShock Infinite, with its near universally high review scores and fleeting comparisons to Citizen Kane, was a recent example of the difference in opinion I felt with professional game critics. I found Infinite to be uneven, with the emphasis on narrative being overshadowed by the disconnect between it and the gameplay.

Gone Home is a first-person exploration game set in the 90’s in which you play through the eyes of 21 year old Katie. After spending a year overseas she returns to her family home only to discover there is nobody there to greet her. Pinned to the front door she finds a letter written by her younger sister Samantha telling her to not come look for her, but Katie decides otherwise.

Estimated reading time: 2,5 minutes.

Sounds interesting, tell me more.

It’s hard to talk more about the plot without majorly spoiling the important bits of the story, so I’ll focus on the gameplay and presentation instead.

It’s Not About The End

It’s Not About The End

Although the game was very short, I can say that it filled me with peace. Except for a few bugs, I found it quite successful. Of course, you shouldn’t expect too much. It was a game that I finished over and over again by enjoying it in general terms. It could have been nicer if it was longer. It was a gripping game that I wanted it to never end. I also liked the graphics and I can say that the atmosphere of the game is really amazing.

This game has some good visuals. Not the best, but they are pretty decent. You might have to mess with the settings a bit to find that sweet spot or else the game will be laggy or have some sickening motion blur. The story confused me a little bit at times. It has easy achievements if that is your thing. Some of the objects were boring to find mainly because the area is so big and spread out. It’s a nice game to play if you want to take a break from Overwatch, Destiny, DOTA, or any other chaotic game.

qomp

qomp

A short, but great experience! Qomp is a platformer(…?) where you control a ball from Pong, and you’re able to change your y-axis by pressing space or clicking… and that’s it! There’s only button, making the whole game extremely easy to get into.

Don’t let the simplicity of the controls fool you, however - qomp is very innovative, brimming with cool level gimmicks. On one level, you’ll be quickly switching between sets of buttons to open previously-inaccessible paths, with this switch also triggering new traps on the way back. On another, you’ll bounce and stumble through a maze that constructs itself before your very eyes. Or maybe you’ll be under water, having normal jumping physics while dodging a giant fish ready to make you his lunch! For a 3-hour long game, there’s an insane amount of variety, with the perfect balance between exploring those setpieces without overusing them.

Manages a surprising breadth and depth of mechanics despite having only one button. Boss fights feature extremely minimal opponents, but somehow still require a great deal of thought. One point which might put people off is the need to continually press the spacebar or mouse button. I found this to get uncomfortable at certain points, not necessarily due to a volume of clicks at any one point, but simply because a keyboard and mouse do not have motions condusive to spamming over a play session. Honestly, this feels like a game which would be perfect for mobile because of that, but I am very happy it is not a mobile game (at least not yet), since I would never have tried it with ads and whatnot.

Summoner’s Mess

Summoner’s Mess

Worth every cent (and much more) of its price, it’s very entertaining to discover the map and each unsuccessful run makes you go for another one to see how far can you go this time.

It has a really nice art direction, and the sound ambiance goes perfectly with the game. Just buy it, with that price it’s like a gift.

This is a very nice and interesting game, the graphics, the music, the mood… everything fits perfectly.

I really enjoyed playing it and doing all the possible endings. It is cool to be able to easily remember the rooms and little by little knowing all the place like it was my own house.

If you enjoy games where the progression is based on your own knowledge instead of unlockable skills, then give it a try!

The game gives you a proper amount of hours of game time given the fact that is super cheap!

Before I Forget

Before I Forget

Goddamn. It’s been a while since a game made me cry. Before I Forget managed to pull that off. I guess it’s personal on some level. I have lost a dear family member to Alzheimers and I work security in a hospital, so I encounter many patients with dementia.

As a game, it’s not all that much. It’s barely even a walking simulator. As an hour long experience, I totally recommend it for the price point! It carries it self very gracefully and portrays the subject matter in a painfully beautiful way. If you have any interest in the subject matter, there are basically no better ways to spend an hour and five euros than playing this game.

Short, but worthwhile experience.

Sad with moments of joy.

A very deeply touching game for me, having watched several family members over the decades affected by Alzheimers or Dementia, wondering what they were seeing, feeling, remembering, forgetting.

The voice acting was so good.

The narrative was so good.

The way the game threw you from one location and memory to another was a bit jarring and confusing, but that was the point.

The way the rooms became colorized and revealed details was clever and stylish.

Indecision.

Indecision.

Indecision was a neat psychological experience with a few jokes. If you like these games I would recommend not reading this review to keep a fresh mindset. The game is made out of small escape rooms and sometimes there is more than one way to leave. All exits seem to lead to the same linear path unless I am missing some clues. The length is maybe 20-30 minutes. However, I am not convinced that you are done with the game after the first playthrough. I won’t give any spoilers but I have found something different later. We could be dealing with one of those sneaky developers.

What can I say about Indecision other than the fact that I wasn’t too indecisive to buy it?

Maybe the fact that I should have been.

Did you watch the trailer on the store page? If so, you already know almost everything of what this game is about.

Did you watch someone else play it? If so, you’ve already experienced everything this game has to offer.

For such a short and cheap game, I must say it was enjoyable. Most puzzles have straightforward solutions but getting to figure them out (which, for a first time, is usually a surprise all its own) feels… Well, for lack of a better word, rewarding.

Shindig

Shindig

Hey there hoomin!

Tbh, the moment I started creating my character, the game had already got me. Not just because there are many (hair) styles you can choose from, but the developers really made an effort to make variety and diversity one of the integral components of this game. And as you can feel while playing, they were very successful in doing so.

The individual and lovable characters are the main reason for playing this charming game! They come to life through their different personal backgrounds, their relationships between one another and their different ways of speaking (which is evident thanks to the great voice acting). But most of all, these characters are damn funny! Playing this game really made me laugh out loud - a lot. That’s why Shindig is not necessarily a single player game. You can also play it together with your family or friends to enjoy the jokes all together. I did the latter and it was one of the most entertaining nights in months.

Gonna have ourselves a Shindig!!!

Bought this charmingly illustrated and voiced old-school Point and Click adventure for my nine year old daughter, but found myself drawn in to the cartoon world of Shindig too, so spent the next few hours playing it with her and we both thoroughly enjoyed the game.

I know she liked this game as she has been singing the catchy tunes ever since!

A really nice concept (who doesn’t love having a party?) with friendly and memorable characters. Would recommend for young and old gamers alike who are looking for a relaxing evenings gaming.
