YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY-

Before you purchase this game, you need to keep one thing in mind: this is NOT a remake. Let me go over that again. THIS IS NOT A REMAKE. It’s a reimagining of the original Yume Nikki. Anyone expecting the same exact game as the original, but in 3D, is dreaming themselves. Trust me, you’re just going to end up massively disappointing yourself.

I managed to finish the majority of the game and got the two endings (still hunting down the collectibles). I’m going to throw this out there for you Yume Nikki fans: you’re either going to love it or you’re going to HATE it. I mean, by god, look at the reviews here…

As of Update 2.0, I can wholeheartedly recommend this game.

At release the game had been lacking, and was quite obviously rushed to a release date.

But the team that made it still had seemed genuinely passionate about the game, and seemed to really be fans of the original, and we finally have this update to prove that.

The game is now polished to a very enjoyable and fun degree, giving the player an almost flawless experience beginning to end, and the world feels so much richer now, and more importantly, so much more like Yume Nikki.

Story of a tiny earth, the symbolic ages

Story of a tiny earth, the symbolic ages

I bought this game because it was on sale and the developer seems to be actively adding features. I’ve only played the first 3 levels in single player, but I think that is enough to post this review so other people might take a look. This will go into my quick casual games category.

You move around the map to save species which drop a power when you collect the amount of species determined by the level. There are enemies of different colors. Each color has a specific path or pattern which you need to pay attention to decide how to proceed. I’ve only played 3 levels at this time, so I have no idea how many enemy types there are in the game.

Big Hops

Big Hops

What is Big Hops?

Big Hops is a fresh action-platformer about a friendly frog named Hop, who’s been stolen from home before he’s ready. On your mission to get Hop home for a real goodbye, you’ll explore 8 huge, colorful worlds and meet a charming cast of animal friends. As you go, you’ll find veggies and gadgets to help you explore, solve puzzles, and create chaos.

Hey, Chris here! I’m the director of Big Hops. I hope it’s OK if I get a bit meta here:

With Big Hops, we want to take a big step forward for 3D platformers and not spend much time retreading existing ground. This game is our answer to the question ‘What could 3D platformers be with deeper, freer movement and open ended, systemic item interaction?’

Deep Movement & Emergent Systems

Between familiar 3D platforming, fluid parkour, and fresh tongue mechanics, you have a lot of movement options as Hop! Once you learn the ropes, you’ll be able to get around VERY fast. Get ready to run, jump, climb, wall-run, dive-roll, tongue swing, hookshot, and much more!

On top of deep movement, we’ve also got a deep sandbox. As you explore Hops' many worlds, you’ll find loads of gadgets and veggies each with surprising and useful effects on the world. You’ll still be discovering new ways items can interact, even dozens of hours in.

Tongue-tastic!

It turns out adding a frog to a 3D platformer gives a lot of opportunity for fresh feeling tongue-focused gameplay! Aside from tasting veggies you can also use your tongue to:

  • Grab veggies and gadgets from afar

  • Activate contraptions and solve puzzles

  • Swing around, launch yourself, hookshot up walls, and more

A World of Animals

Across 8 huge, colorful worlds you’ll meet a charming cast of cute animal friends!

Alongside frogs, you’ll also find friendly rabbits, raccoons, gulls, otters, birds, geckos, bats, and more. Featuring adorable character designs by Steven Sugar.

Duped

A really interesting puzzle-platformer game. Strange mechanics. Divide yourself and sacrifice your bodies. Throw your body into spike pits and climb on your own head. I always felt bad for those lost.

Mythic Prelude - Concept Demo

Mythic Prelude - Concept Demo

Lucky me gets to write the first review for Mythic Prelude - Concept Demo. Despite being flagged and published on Steam as a full game instead of a demo (perhaps an error by the developer when publishing), this is definitely just a demo and not a complete game.

Mythic Prelude is a template flip from the godawful GameMaker Studio game construction kit. The developer took a template for a 2D top down Zelda style retro pixel brawler, filled out the detail, slapped a few asset flipped sprites and low effort retro pixel backgrounds on, and then dumped it on Steam. GameMaker Studio is a terrible quality “game” construction kit, so it’s no surprise that games “made” by copying + pasting templates from it are likewise terrible quality, and there’s no exception here. Game construction kits aren’t meant to make professional products, they’re meant to educate and teach people about some aspects of game making, and to make demos to pass around to friends.
