Amidst The Darkness

Amidst The Darkness

Amidst The Darkness is a truly terrifying first-person survival horror game developed and published by Loneminded.

Dragged, bloodied and bruised into old dilapidated worker halls, Amidst The Darkness follows the story of a sadistic entity - known informally as The Being. Trawl your way through old abandoned halls and sewers in a bid to find an escape.

No matter where you go, or the route that you take, The Being will unpredictably follow your every move. Creeping closer step-by-step, inch-by-inch until it is within reaching distance. The crows scarpering from their nest nearby, or that unmistakable slow-moving silhouette in the distance - it beckons upon thee.

Features

  • Immersive First-Person Horror: Navigate through chilling, immersive environments

  • Truly Unsettling Story: Experience and uncover the story of old workers and The Being.

  • Unpredictable Enemies: Each playthrough will play differently with help from the unpredictability of AI.

  • Full Gamepad Support: Prefer sitting back and enjoying the experience? Now you can - Amidst The Darkness has full controller support.

As far as the story and visuals go, I enjoyed this experimental game, but the platforming was a bit clunky. For the most part, it’s a puzzle-platformer with a psychological twist. The narrative is told from the perspective of a girl that is having relationship problems with her boyfriend. After each platforming section, you get to play a stealth mini-game where you are trying to isolate your boyfriend from the crowd by creating distractions. I suspect that game has 2 endings depending on your actions, I am pretty sure I got the bad one. Even though I kinda knew where the story was going, it still got me, and I am considering replaying it just to see if I can get a better outcome. It takes around 2-3 hours to finish if you don’t skip any puzzles, although you do have that option if you keep getting stuck. Aside from that, the game has nice achievement support, assuming that you want to replay the game with no hits and so on. Overall, the game is very creative, but that creativity occasionally comes at the cost of intuitive gameplay.

9 Æsoteric games, the result of many experimental worlds brought to conclusion at last.

Each of these belong in a common oniric universe, where you’re confronted with a diverse array of A.R.G. consoles, each having a uniquely different game in its system but sharing a common dark origin.

EGREGORE / ZYX

tmOD / Vlast

Oneiroi / tmPaint

Apex Byte Reeling / Wrecc

Noahs Ark Demake

The experiences contained within this collection are calling. It is a mystery if they even grew to exist as a published format, cursed as they are, belonging somewhere between the discarded and the dreamt. Some originally forgotten demos, others accidents of evil destiny and spiteful development, even the consoles in which they belong are not a thing of public knowledge…

Until now.

Okay wow. First of all, I do like the narrative, and it’s very thought-provoking, but I have to give a content warning, which is very strange because I never felt that way about the game. The game is super heavy on animal sadism, even though it’s more of a mirror for people - I am sure the devs don’t hate the flying squirrels. It’s very into the suicide themes, and it’s not subtle at all. You have to willingly harm characters and watch them suffer, so it can be a little uncomfortable. That said, having some experience with these issues, I don’t think the game misrepresents the problem at all, it’s all very close to the heart. Even better, the game also has some genuinely funny moments, which made me feel very bad for laughing, my god, that alligator dream.

I spent a good while trying to think of a way to review this game, but the only words that keep coming back to my head is that ‘it’s an experience’.

Nonetheless, I appreciate any game where you can be a mantis. Even if you have to get a little choppy-choppy on some squirrels.

I’d love to have the opportunity to hear from the games developers on the thought process behind many of the game-play decisions.
