HyperRogue

HyperRogue

Here’s finally my review of Hyperrogue, probably my favorite game on Steam! :)

In a nutshell, Hyperrogue can be described as a minimalist tactical roguelike in the hyperbolic plane. So, what does that mean, specifically?

First of all, it’s a minimalist roguelike, and there is no equipment, and no items except for Orbs (basically spells) which are often activated upon pick up. Hyperrogue is turn- and grid-based, and combat rules are simple: Every attack is guaranteed to hit, and is usually deadly - for monsters as well as for the player. As a roguelike, it has permadeath. To avoid accidental player deaths, the game prevents you from performing actions that immediately result in your death, though there’s a hardcore mode for the more confident players.

I’ve played this game for over a hundred hours and I’m still not quite sure what to say about it! It’s certainly a weird one. But it’s a brilliant, good kind of weird that certain types of gamers should really check out.

HyperRogue is a mind-bending game of chess that takes place on a world that’s quite unlike our own. The object of the game is to collect as much treasure as possible without getting one-hit killed and succumbing to permadeath (as the ‘Rogue’ in the title might suggest) but… navigating the world is a challenge unlike any you’ve ever met before. You know how, in real life, things appear smaller as they get farther away? Like how the horizon only looks like it’s a few feet long to your eyes, when in reality it spans miles? As it turns out, on a hyperbolic plane, this effect is compounded: the horizon is much, much longer than it would be in real life. Two paths that appear near to one another will take you in completely opposite directions. The world is structured in such a way that is impossible for your poor spatial senses to intuitively understand, so scrolling something off the screen will mean that it’s probably lost forever unless you’re keeping close track of landmarks.

Sayonara Golden Days

Sayonara Golden Days

A short if not somewhat relatable story of a group of friends slowly growing apart due to life and the project they left behind. It has a bit of a puzzle that doesn’t take too long to figure out.

All of the story is told through dialogue before each level or little snippets.

Only real gripe I have is the rather extremely slow pace of the character (annoying but understandable to fit the first game feel) and that the game crashed on me during credits roll. It was a nice game, but since it deleted my save file I don’t want to restart just to see if the last achievement is at the end.

Short, worthwhile, a good experience. I’m glad I got to play the game, and I enjoyed learning about the characters. I had some problems with menus and freezing, but this didn’t drastically impact my experience.

Chess Destroyer

Chess Destroyer

What a great and innovative way to play chess. I like the ways you destroy other pieces it looks really great combined with the amazing sound effects it makes when you crush enemies and next wave comes into play. If you are a fan of chess or have just played it for fun then i really recommend this game. I also think it is a great way to think differently and also practice some strategy in the real game.

Cool idea but the game is stacked against you. even in random “Easy” mode you can not keep it going for long as the goals become unobtainable

HexLab

HexLab

So… what exactly is Hexlab?

Well, it’s a bit of an odd game with an odd premise. Drone controlled hexagons squishing other hexagons? I can’t say I’ve heard of that before. But odd doesn’t necessarily mean bad.

Pros:

-Very laid back and relaxed (personally found it good for unfrying my brain after a couple hours of Factorio)

-Multiple unit types and drone commanders, which allows for lots of different strategies

-Rewards intelligent gameplay

-A lot like chess, easy to learn

Cons:

-Campaign is only 19 levels (I finished it in under an hour)

HexLab is similar to chess or checkers in the Sci-Fi setting, where the difference in the heights of the playing field is used.

An unusual project with its deep atmosphere. The game has some kind of its own attractive magic. Music and graphics are chosen perfectly, ideally emphasizing unhurried meditative gameplay.

Game mechanics is unusual, I have not yet met such games. I like that the developer is trying to come up with something new, unique and original.

The game is difficult, requiring thinking over each turn. On the playing field are hexes of the opponent and the player, which he buys before the match.

CONET|コネット

CONET|コネット

“Conet” is an extremely simple one-on-one strategy game of dots and boxes.

Black is the first player and white is the second player.

Clicking the square dots will connect them with lines to any other adjacent square dots that have already been clicked, scoring you one point for each line formed.

Both players take in turns clicking the square dots until they have all been clicked, and the player with the most points wins!

The special “lonely points” rule also means that any square dots that have not been connected to any others are worth three points each.

It’s 2 mb ram! ULTRA LOW PC! it rolls at 60 fps very good gameplay! Me pc is good for games! But this one make me very happy! You should play this! I can use my controller! (: Good Gameplay of gunblocks!

Nice little puzzle game. I really like the mix between worms-scorched earth type shooting, and tetris and i guess a platformer? Nah, it’s not a platformer, by any means. But still :)

Anyway, i also appreciate a lot that this game has so much dialogue, some fun characters and a seemingly intriguing storyline.

Good job, will play more when it’s ready, i think

Death Drives A Bus

Death Drives A Bus

Very charming game! I knew from the get-go I’d like this game.

So death' side job as a bus driver comes in handy when his horse falls ill. So drive around, pick the dead up and drop them off to heaven or heck.

The puzzles become, in my opinion, quickly challenging, but not frustrating. It helps a lot with the simple interface and quick rest.

Also, the i.d.’s of the dead people, doesn’t do anything but it’s such a great detail to add in.

At the moment of writing (sept22,20),

the achievements on Linux (mint) do not work, but an in-game save keeps track of your progress.

It is quite fitting that the road to hell heck is littered with traffic jams. Death Drives A Bus is a great little package. Most stages seem to have multiple possible solutions but that doesn’t stop them from being quite perplexing from time to time. If you’re a fan of puzzle games you really can’t go wrong with this title for the price it’s being offered at.
