Watch Your Helmet

Watch Your Helmet

You still could not even imagine how difficult it is to control a spacesuit with a jet engine in space. Thanks to this game, you will realize how interesting and exciting it is, especially if you need to escape from moving asteroids, dodge moving planets, collect fuel and minerals, and complete a rescue mission.

Test and then improve your spatial awareness and rocket management skills in zero gravity at 45 levels full of minerals, dangerous asteroids, planets and abandoned cats in space that need rescue.

Black Hole Simulator

Black Hole Simulator

The simulation was a bit more complex than I anticipated, of course it would probably have some details but I wasn’t really expecting to see general relativity showing up at the left of the accretion disk this gorgeously. After waiting for a minute or two without feeding the gates of hell, the event horizon got empty blank and the radio noise obviously stopped. All that just to start glowing back again very faintly="" a couple seconds later.

So, the simulation could have a simple on-screen log event (it could be optional), it would even help if someone is using the application to explain how a black hole works. I know people can just go to Youtube but why, if there is a beautiful simulation spinning for you at will? /very

Note: The developer, PanGuoJun was kind enough to supply this review copy to the Sturgeons Law Curator group.

Black Hole Simulator is an early access 3D rendered black hole simulator, just like it says on the box. You’re presented with a reasonable facsimile of a black hole, which you can spin around to get different views. You can increase or decrease the size of the thing, alter the gravity model between Newtonian and Relativistic, and you can have it absorb a star and watch what happens. You can also choose between a number of different backgrounds to see how the gravitational lensing makes things look. At this stage of development, that’s all there is to it. To say this is rudimentary bare bones is a massive (geddit!?) understatement.

BLACKBODY THEORY OF MOTION

BLACKBODY THEORY OF MOTION

This game is still in early stages, but it is addictive and genuinely scary.

There are some much-needed improvements, including

  • Better controls for up/down, a function to reset to the “normal” plane where most asteroids are located,

  • View distance that doesn’t look unnatural (now the objects just spawn out of blackness),

  • Saves,

  • Goals, achievements,

  • Softer sounds, current ones are way too harsh.

Really enjoyed this with kids. The 3D printer is pretty cool, also the “wooble” planet behind you in the base scene when choosing planets. It’s all nice, like job-simulator-in-space. Can’t wait for the future content. Needs more stuff to do.

VITATIO 3

VITATIO 3

Vitatio 3 is inexpensive fun for all ages. The game is challenging in the beginning because you need to build up funds in order to upgrade maneuverability and add a cannon, but that is part of all the charm of this sideways scroller. Playing the game reminds me of when Han Solo has to maneuver in an asteroid field and C3PO says “Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1!”

This game is next to impossible to play in the beginning, it needs huge efforts to improve balance and playability before moving forward.

Right now, it’s a torture.

The Chaser’s Voyage

The Chaser’s Voyage

You have only one hundred days. One hundred days to pay off your debt to a dreaded pirate lord. Luckily, you have friends, and one of those friends has a spaceship… and an idea: transport people from planet to planet! Seems simple, but this part of the galaxy is riddled with endless dangers. Paying back your debt will be one thing, surviving this voyage will be another.

You are the Captain:

  • Take-off on your rogue-like adventure with a fully-voice acted crew of eccentric and diverse characters.

  • Take command of the Chaser and pilot it through treacherous terrain, while escaping from deadly space pirates and relentless bounty hunters!

  • Manage power between the Chaser’s weapons, shields, engines, and auxiliary systems.

Pay Back Your Debt:

  • Earn money by transporting clients across the sector.

  • Survive multiple encounters as you travel to your client’s destination.

  • Each encounter is randomly generated based on how many days you’ve survived, who your client is, and which territory you’re in.

  • Make enough money in 100 days to avoid the wrath of a notorious pirate lord!

Fly Through a Small Part of a Larger Galaxy:

  • Uncover tons of lore by unlocking entries in your crew journal. (Release TBD)

  • Explore your crew’s backstory and learn about the galaxy through their eyes.(Release TBD)

First off the bat - I have never played anything like this before; controlling a space game with typing commands. Disclaimer: I only use Steam for the new Red Alert: Remastered, but I learned of this game on FB.

You’ll have to like the following to enjoy the game: 1 bit graphics and typing.

You’ll die a lot at first, but you will find a method to the madness and learn to use commands and when to use what weapons. I usually take out everything in a level and then raid the planet.

A bizarre smash up of star trek bridge crew and typing of the dead.

You need to carefully manage you ammo and prioritize between maneauvering attacking and defending, each action requiring a lengthy string to be typed perfectly.

Very original concept great for booting up when you just feel like playing for a short session

Minor good part :

  • The idea space ship management is kinda ok, you can be pirate, you can be trader, you can be transporter, you can be smuggler with kinda good gameart.

  • The random generated appearance of the crew is good… but need more base model, I found like total 8, 4 for human m&f…or maybe more…

Minor bad part :

  • Sometimes missing UI sound fx.

  • Crew sometimes gone missing.

  • Crew sometimes idle too much.

Bad part :

  • Boring at traveling, you almost do nothing here and the thing make it worst is the traveling time is long enough to make me think “jir, what the hell am I buying this game for?…” (you know a few seconds different is too long for game with nothing to do).

SimTower meets Privateer

Interesting combination of game elements in a manner that shouldn’t work, but somehow does. Interesting range of ships (but needs to be bigger and include more classes), the commodity model is reasonable (albeit rather basic), very similar to the Privateer model of base types, except that this game allows for bases to be multiple ‘types’.

Crew recruitment and requirements can be counter-intuitive and frustrating, especially with limited options at each base and the need to build up a large crew over time. I would have thought that having a crew that eats different things would lead to better harmony as they’re not all competing for the same subset of the food supply (but that’s me I guess).
