Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!!

Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!!

This game is quick to dismiss for its price tag and its initial presentation of anime-heavy content but it’s actually fun to pick up as a fighting game and let’s be honest we could all use some extra cuteness brighten a bad day.

-PROS-

Mechanics are what you will enjoy here because everyone is capable of dashing/canceling very easily. It’s not as “on-point” demanding like in Guilty Gear or others that require (Roman) canceling to be done only with certain moves with very specific frames of attack.

Pretty great fighter, although it will take some time to get used to it. If you can put aside the theme (take my word for it, it’s tolerable in game), you are in for a treat.

There are three main reasons the game sticks out as a 2D fighter:

  • Homing button

You can use it to jet yourself towards the opponent, delay your attack, fly around projectiles, extend your combo, dodge attacks. No other fighter allows you to be this mobile in the air. It’s something that you will keep finding ways to exploit, it’s pretty great.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

If you want to get into fighting games, BBTAG is a good game to start with, combos aren’t too hard and not too many system mechanics to remember. As my first real fighting game experience I’ll vouch for this aspect until I die.

The fact most characters are viable and useful and of course from the 4(soon to be 5) franchises who bring all their personalities and simplified play styles make for a very addicting, energized and fast paced fighter.

My favourite aspect is the fact that if you work on a team enough, you can make any team work.

BBxTagBattle is one of the best Anime Fighters for Fighting Game Newcomers

Overall, if you aren’t put off by the anime-aesthetic and you aren’t looking for the “hardcore experience” of Guilty Gear or og Blazblue, but you still want a game that is highly competitive and challenging, then this is one of the best games to pick up.

The biggest downside is the subpar PC port that Arcsys refuses to fix. The biggest upside is the very entartaining gameplay.

cons:

  • Doesn’t have thousands of players like DBFZ, MK11, T7 or SFV

GUILTY GEAR Xrd -SIGN-

After a Dozen Years comes now the next new Installment of Guilty Gear.

Developed with the Unreal Engine 3, the Game features now real 3D Chars (No HD Sprites) alongside some few Cinematics during Play which gives the Feel of Immersive 3D. The Game itself is still played in 2D (Arenas are tough 3D Maps with Impression giving 2D).

You can choose over 16 Characters (some New alongside some Old Ones) each with his own Challenge Course for learning BnB Combos. The Story Mode is now a Movie (estimated 4 hours) without some Interaction, so you can sit back and press only the Text Screens away during Talking between Characters.

+Fantastic art direction/art style

+Rockin OST

+There is an English dub for those who want it. Overall quality is hit or miss; there are issues with delivery, voice clip editing, audio balancing, etc. I find it worthy enough to be a positive

+Very solid gameplay

~The input buffer is slightly finicky; this is my opinion, and it’s listed here as an observation, and not a review point

-This game was played entirely on a keyboard, and using the button configuration menu was a hassle

-The menus use their own fixed button configuration for navigation, and you can’t change it

SC2VN - The eSports Visual Novel

I’m going to try really hard to write an unbiased review here as I know the writer for this novel personally, but everything I write here will be an honest representation of my thoughts on the game. But first, some minor background to the expectations I had.

I’ve been playing visual novel games for several years. In a similar comparison, I’ve also played JRPGs for years. On that note, there exists a well-known engine called RPGmaker that has slowly built itself a notorious reputation in the world of game development. What I mean to say is: most RPGmaker games are middling (which is the nice way of putting it).

First of all - I usually do not write reviews but I believe this game deserves every bit of attention as it may inspire Devs to come up with a sequel in near future (at least I hope).

Let me put it this way: I pretty much hate VN and I really enjoyed this one. I also don’t like eSports in general and this game made me interested in competitive Starcraft. It is truly remarkable how this simple game kept me both invested in story and relaxed at the same time. The idea was there for quite some time but until now I didn’t see someone take it and make into a story of a game. Shame as this one proves that eSports make fantastic topic for “social story”.

Aim: Warmup

Aim: Warmup

If there was more care and attention then I may have been swayed by this but the fact you are going up against Aim Lab which is free and have so little to compare against it, you have dug your own grave. Target layouts are too similar, only the option of having a pistol and having just one area or setting to try is hugely disappointing.

But hey, if I ever go pro in CS then I’ll give you a thanks in my speech.

Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! XTEND

Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! XTEND

Warning: The netcode is delay based and current population of regulars is maybe 10 people max (including myself) who are pretty chill but kinda insular, who also happen to have solid connections with each other (mostly). The patch notes for Xtend are available, but the Mizuumi section for Xtend is largely barren. The game is also apparently tied to your monitor refresh and needs to be capped through external methods. The training is lackluster and does not not natively have a input display.

Turn back now if these factors are a turn off, or just plain inconvenient - which is entirely reasonable.

This has probably been my favorite surprise-release of 2017, at least in the fighting game genre, since I had no idea this game existed, let alone was going to be released.

Now, despite the fact that I am a big fan of games like Nitro+, UNIEL, Aquapazza, Melty, etc, I never really got into AH3LM. The main reason was likely because, at the time I picked it up on Steam, barely anyone played, and those who did would body someone like me before I could even confirm anything. The other problem was, while I could get my friends interested enough to try out BlazBlue, or UNIEL, or even Nitro+, for some reason, no one would give AH3LM a try for some reason. So, since I was limited to continual training for the off chance of an online match, or single player modes, I had pretty much dropped the game, except for the occasional itch for something different.

CHAOS CODE -NEW SIGN OF CATASTROPHE-

CHAOS CODE -NEW SIGN OF CATASTROPHE-

This is honestly one of my favorite fighting games. If there’s any game I’d say it’s similar to, probably KOF or other SNK games, but it has a lot that makes it different obviously. It has great system and character balance with no one mechanic seeming overwhelming, and each character has their fair share of pros and cons that they have to work around with all of them still being on an even playing field, and especially with the extra selectable moves, this game properly avoids falling into the problem of some match ups feeling WAY too one sided, with every character having a good amount of variety to their move set without everyone being too similar. Fun character designs with cthulhu magical girls, muscly grappler chefs, edgelords and of course, my big boy Ray. There’s so much freedom to every character with combos and tech, especially with the extra selectable specials and supers. I spend many hours in training mode trying to find new tech. Matches can vary a lot in how they play out based on what hits you land, so there’s room for you to end a match in two combos (or even one in rare situations), but other matches will carry on much longer if you don’t get your harder to land combo starters and counter hits or manage your resources towards big damage, and some characters often rely on meter to help them in neutral play and set ups. I really like that there’s room for those kind of big combos to happen while also having it be very nuanced in how it’s approached so that you don’t just do the same stuff each match. Neutral plays just as big a role as learning big combos. Some characters can annihilate you through solid neutral alone if you can’t adapt, so you gotta be strong on multiple fronts. There’s many strong offensive and defensive mechanics with neither being overwhelming. No comeback mechanics or combo breakers (I personally hate that stuff). Meter is handled super well in terms of how much importance it holds and how each character interacts with it in their own way. Adds a nice bit of weight to resource management while still not being the only thing that determines who wins. I’m just kinda gushing, but god I love this game. A bit of a smaller player base, but we’re still here and we’re growing over time. Especially on discord. If you want to play this game, join Tenryo’s discord server and there’s plenty of people there to answer your questions and play you in matches, including myself. So yeah. Big glowing recommendation for this game.

Depends on 3rd party software to run. This would qualify it for no reccomendation already but when the game is working, it’s mediocre at best. The translation was just ripped from the Hong Kong localization (so expect engrish text wherever humanly applicable) The online is a wasteland at this point, so don’t bother if you’re in it for that. The singleplayer is pretty mediocre, and the arcade / story mode is brought down not only by the aformentioned engrish, but also some embarrassing endings. You see that 5th picture in the gallary? Imagine that but for every female character, being explained away by something very along the lines of “oh, well I guess the battle is over now, ho hum what should I do now? Disrobing sounds like a good idea–”. I’ll add that even for a japanese fighting games, most of the female character designs are pretty shameless in their obvious intent (my personal favorite is either the essential equivelent of the daughter of c’thulu having a permanant wedgie or the cyborg ninja having her nipples protrude through metal armor). The customization options are kind of cool on the surface, but you have to unlock colors, and you’re only allowed a certain number of them. You’re better off referring to Blazblue Central Fiction’s modding community if you have a hard on for that sort of thing. The customization for the fights are a pretty okay idea, but the execution is underwhelming, and not as well balanced as one would hope. As for character balance, it’s not the absolute worst, but if there were to be an online scene, you’d probably come to expect the three characters with easy to access “technically not touch of deaths, but may as well be since they also corner carry and end with hard knockdown into 50/50”. It’s alright with friends, but frankly there are just other fighting games which do what this game does but cheaper and / or better.
