Fears to Fathom - Home Alone

Fears to Fathom - Home Alone

Very nice concept for horror game, I don’t usually like games with jump scares because in my opinion, jumpscares are lazy way to make the game scary, I enjoy terrifying and creepy atmosphere, but with this game, the jumpscares are fine, they are not forced like in other horror games as being part of the storyline, you can play the game without experiencing these jump scares and that is what I really like, however if you encounter any of these jumpscares, they are really well made and will spook you the first time encountering them. The atmosphere is really well nailed as well, I also enjoy the VHS tape feeling of the “screen”, this is someones story and this VHS tape feel reminds me of it. I’m terrible at describing things but what I can say very well, I am more than enjoying this game and looking forward of playing through the next and other future episodes!

Here’s The Thing:

You are Miles Tell-all, a 14-year old who decided to make a game about a terrifying encounter while being Home Alone instead of posting on Reddit like a normal adolescent or human being! Starts off normal enough, you get to kick back and relax- you see a neighbor playing “bark louder” with his dog, no alarms there!! But the true fear comes after… HOMEWORK. Can you find the answers and live to share your story… even though you were already doing it~

I really liked this game! The main character is very charming and the game does a good job at helping players understand the context without forcefeeding you obvious exposition. One feature I liked was the ability to easily have many different saves because each choice affects your outcome; in some similar games there is nothing to allow you to see every single possible route and see how each choice affects you but Ad Movere allows you to go back instantly to see all the different paths. I also liked the soundtrack a lot! it did a good job at setting the vibes and of course the artstyle was very unique & lovely. I think you should get it if you would like a charming visual novel with a lovely plot and great QOL features.

Alan Wake

Alan Wake

Alan is a famous writer of psychological horror books who goes with his wife to vacation in Washington, more precisely in a small town called Bright Falls. In this place the protagonist begins to experience episodes of its last book published and about which he does not remember to have it written. However, all the current events in your life are directly and indirectly related to this book. Here could be a lot more said, however they would be spoilers of the game.

Alan Wake’s graphics are very beautiful, well rendered and polished. The detail levels of various objects are quite high. The light and shadow effects are exceptional and the textures are very well crafted. Details such as the reflections of light over the water and the light of the lantern illuminating the setting or even focusing on objects through a glass are excellent. Undoubtedly graphically the game is very well done. The fictitious and mountainous town of Bright Falls with its native forests, abandoned and old mills, empty houses and sheds made of wood and weathered are exceptionally well portrayed. When you are driving a car, a pick up or a jeep very fast pop-ins are present, but do not even bother.

I Super-Sampled The Game at 1.5PD via Oculus Tray Tool And Played On The High Preset. Throughout My Play Through, I Only Dropped Below 90fps While Looking At The Structure Being Built Off In The Distance While Standing Next To The Guy Outside. Other than that, performance wise, the demo ran great. After I began to pick up objects I immediately realized that the game featured dynamic depth of field. And while it’s not perfect, it’s pretty freaking cool! This feature is something we’re expecting to built into the next-gen VR HMD’s but on a physical, more accurate level. In saying that, this software implementation isn’t bad though. After I finish typing this, I’m actually going to go back in there and try to get the three achievements.

This is awesome as for a Free game.

Got myself completely immersed from the first seconds of the gameplay.

The body thing is amazing. I wish it would get some adjustments in the future, but overall this is much better than flying hands.

Locomotion was pretty intuitive and comfortable with my Rift’s touches.

Pressing “B” button allowed me to switch between sitting and standing positions.

I have found the graphics switch on the wall and mid settings worked great for my setup (Geforce 1060). no huge frame drops and pretty good graphics.

“Who put Bella in the Wych Elm?”

~The unknown individual

To be honest, I didn’t really plan to write this review. I mean… what is there to say? It’s the second game in Supermassive’s horror anthology (a series of short spooky stories told in “choose your own adventure” way with some QTE elements) and I already wrote detailed review of Man of Medan (which was the first one), so, like I said, what else is there to say? Surprisingly, it turned out that, even though the core mechanics here is almost identical to what we’ve seen in Man of Medan, the actual storytelling, the structure of the game is pretty different and it does make it to feel… well… different. So… here goes.

“Little Hope” is one of the few cinematic, story driven games that are better played with a friend than alone and this is why I bought it. Unfortunately Supermassive Games let us down once more. We tried it a dozen of times, but just like their previous title the online coop is full of glitches, infinite loading screens and corrupted save files that didn’t let us finish the game. One year later they don’t even bother solving the problems and patching the game. Two years later they haven’t patched “Man of Medan” either. The single player is decent but nothing special. Cool story and atmosphere but definitely a step backward compared to “Man of Medan” as of the gameplay, decisions making and sceneries design. You can try couch coop though.

The very last part of the game was a bit frustrating due to the lack of checkpoints for the last puzzle, which made it unnecessarily hard but other than that I had a fantastic time with the game. I would highly recommend getting this if you’re into exploration/puzzle games with an interesting story.

PROS:

  • Great visuals and level design

  • Good puzzles (with some nice physical puzzles too)

  • Very good audio

  • Intriguing and promising story

  • Great atmosphere

  • Very responsive controls with options for faster movement, snap and smooth and left-handed

OK, here goes:

This is not a bad game, and it really has a lot of good things going for it: interesting story, really great sound effects (spooky as hell in many spots!), and in many places is open-world enough to keep it less than completely linear. That being said, here are the the things I really had trouble with:

  1. IT’S SO FRIGGIN' DARK!! Almost the entire game - with the exception of a couple of cut-scenes - takes place at night and/or in interior spaces with little or no ambient lighting. This works great to achieve a mood - and yes, it’s creepy as hell - but soon become a royal pain in the ass, especially when you’re required to use two hands for things - like tools - where you’re forced to put away your flashlight and fumble around in the complete dark. VERY frustrating at times.

Chronicles of Tal’Dun: The Remainder - Act 2

Chronicles of Tal’Dun: The Remainder - Act 2

If you’ve read my review on Act 1 of this game you know I not only recommend it but love it. It is a truly unique work of art from my perspective. I adore the artwork in this game, the story and the music.

I am only an hour in but like to take my time going slowly through this game.

The character of Ilar is mysterious and compelling as always throughout the game. I enjoy that the game allows the player to choose their own gender and Ilar is also not defined as a gender so it is up to you to determine that for yourself. The game also uses gender-neutral pronouns implemented in a very natural way. Using they/them or xe/xer. I usually don’t mind if a game does determine genders for the player but this was a refreshing take that really, in my opinion, makes the characters more mysterious and wonderful.

Hmmm…yet another indie horror game based on Asian ghost mythology graces Steam. So how does this one compare to other recent efforts I’ve played?

Well, right off the bat, I certainly found it more compelling than White Day…a game that I started sooner, but will clearly be finishing later. (Fear not, a review will eventually surface; as soon as I find the patience to waste more of my precious life hiding from that pesky janitor!) I’d also say it’s much better than Nightfall: Escape, a tad better than Araya, and roughly on a par with The Coma: Cutting Class and the first DreadOut.

I anxiously waited for this game to come out since I saw it on the steam store page a few months ago. The idea of Thai horror themes in a game fascinated me as I have alwaye been a horror nerd and it was a perfect excuse to learn some real things about Thai’s culture regarding supernatural elements.

What I got was a good horror game with a great, chilly atmosphere and a creepy antagonist. As with most horror games these days, you are not provided with any weapons and have to hide from the enemies. Its a repeated formula in most horror games these days which is still appealing and scary. The story is told through notes and pictures scattered around along with some Thai cultural references to the spirits which are hunting you which adds nicely to the game and provokes a sense of interest in the story too. There are some puzzles thrown in the mix which are not as challenging once you know what you are doing and mostly revolve around opening locked doors by finding keys, or finding codes etc. The later parts of the game are more tense in nature as the enemy becomes very unpredictable in their detection and movement patterns forcing you to adjust your playing strategy accordingly. It may be a little frustating near the end game where you have to repeat some tedious sections again because you died at the last minute escaping from the enemy.

DISCLAIMER

The review you are about to read is based on my own experience with the game and my own personal judgment and rating system! No third party has impacted anything said in this review. This review is also 100% spoiler free, so you don’t need to worry about that either.

Gameplay and Movement Controls (17 out of 20)

Everyone pretty sure expected the classic gameplay from the first game. ‘Before the Storm’ is based on the Unity Engine. Deck Nine had to re-do the gameplay aspect for this game. I must admit that I was very used gameplay feeling from the start, not that it’s that much different but still it is. Overal mouse control is pretty weird I have to admit. It feels like the mouse is working flawlessly sometimes and sometimes it just doesn’t register the movement right away. Which is later followed by half a second delay to anything you do with your mouse in terms of camera movement. I’m pretty sure it has to do with the engine itself or the developer set it that way on purpose, but since almost all games that are based on the Unity engine have had the same input delay issue of some sort for me in the past, I doubt it. It is not a game-breaking thing, but sometimes it can just be frustrating while moving the camera around.

Before the Storm is the prequel to the award-winning and highly claimed Life is Strange , one of the best Point & Clicks ever made. Is this complementary release as fulfilling and ground-breaker as the original? For fans, absolutely!

I find it hard to believe someone would be picking up Life is Strange: Before the Storm without first going through the original game. With that said, Before the Storm pretty much follows the steps of Chloe’s friendship with Rachel and their mischievous adventures.
