Blocks!: Julius Caesar

Blocks!: Julius Caesar

Very fun game, I can’t stop playing it. Always a different outcome, so very replayable. AI is as dumb as a rock, though, so you can grab a beer and expect a win. If you’re playing Pompey the Great, expect to win in the first or second campaign (out of 5), if you’re Caesar it will take the full game. But you’ll win, trust me.

I always enjoy, but it would be a more fulfilling experience if the AI didn’t commit ritual suicide every game. Smarten up the AI and you’ve got a 5-star beer-and-pretzel winner!

Adapting a boardgame to digital format is admittedly an art. Columbia Games' Julius Caesar is a very well-regarded wargame, accessible enough for a beginner to pick up. However, it loses something in this version.

Although the in-game Tutorial hints do provide excellent insight on the mechanisms and rules of the boardgame, the interface is lacking. The 23-page manual provided is basically a rewrite of the original 8-page (!) Columbia Games rules, with some misspellings (“Appolo” on the card shown in the manual), and, critically, without any information on the user interface.

Libertad o Muerte!

Libertad o Muerte!

Libertad o Muerte! is a board game, complete with cards and dice. For me this is novel and pleasurable. Even though most games I play are now computer games, I still have a game room for my board wargames and love the maps, counters and dice.

LoM has all this, but formatted for the computer so I can pbem a true dream. The game designer has taken gamers into many eras and conflicts not typically modeled in wargames. This is so true with the release of LoM. It provides a look into the revolutionary wars of Latin America. I thought I knew a lot about Latin American history, but I learned so much in my beta testing of this unique game system.

I’ve been playing only Bolivar scenario for many hours both sides. I finally learned mechanics and it is great enjoyment. I’ll play grand gampaign and try pbem soon after. Map is similar to Ageod games and card system very nice. I didn’t see any crash or bug. Highly recommend.

Blocks!: Richard III

It’s seems like a worthy and faithful adaptation of a good block game, albeit fairly expensive for what you get by modern standards. Below is some feedback:

1. The sound effects are pretty minimal and could be a little more atmospheric, plus the graphics aren’t the most beautiful. I don’t know whether it’s a lack of resolution or what, but they just look a little harsh. I also think better visual clarity over nobles, heirs, who’s king, and who dies vs who goes back into the pool would greatly help the UI but I’m assuming this will get easier with repeat plays.

All the blocks games appear to of been abandoned with no more word from devs. This after making promises to continue work on each title, and after crowd funding 2 of the titles. Suffice to say I am not the only one who is unhappy with the state of these games (more so because it had a lot of potential) and would say stay far away! Not even worth it on sale as it barely works. Poor ai, bugs, and from what I hear multiplayer is essentially broken.

I’d also add its best to stay away from Avalon Digital until they get their act together. Other than SGS (and possibly the Carrier game I do not own it) their games have releases buggy, with little visibility and a failure to improve at all on the AI which is atrocious.

Freespace 2

Freespace 2

There are no words in the English language (or any other, for that matter), to describe how much I loved Freespace 2. Especially Free Space Open from the modding community of the Hard-Light Project, which is basically the definitive edition of freespace, enhanced to todays graphical standards and featuring hundreds of hours of very high quality user made content they could actually charge money for. Writing, voice acting etc. the modding community did a better job at those than many AAA titles within the industry.

Why I recommend this game

This game is what made me the gamer I am today. I bought it back when it first came out, I bought it on Good Old Games and now I’ve bought it on Steam. Why? I’ll tell you why - I believe it’s the greatest game ever made.

Why this game is awesome and deserves your attention;

  • The original graphics were fantastic back at release in 1999.

  • You won’t be using the original graphics when playing the game.

  • The story was - and still is - amazing. Far better than the usual tripe.

Using your Pii makes you say Whee!!!

Well, not that much enthusiasm, but since this game is no longer in EA, I thought I’d finally review this one. In beta builds, PiiSim was a mess. Aiming was a pain, destroying was a pain, and gauging anything was a pain. Fortunately, fixes have been made to the final product to make it a more enjoyable casual experience where each session lasts about 15-20 minutes at most.

SGS Afrika Korps

SGS Afrika Korps

I came across SGS Afrika Corps via a Youtube “First Look” video which then led me to a couple more in depth videos. After watching those and the Developers own short tutorial videos I was hooked!

Why? Because I think it is a nice blend of complexity and simplicity combined in one game. I like a game like this that offers a variety of interesting scenarios, some short, some longer. That can be played in an evening or longer depending on the scenario. The variety of cards that can come into play adds variety in playing the scenario. There’s a lot of thought one must give in choosing which card or cards to play and when to do so.

A nice old school wargame. You can lead the Axis or Allies troops in the North African front. The game offers the possibility to play the major battles plus a long campaign lasting from the early 1941 to late 1942. The gameplay reminds a classic board-game stile, the counters are informative and beautifully crafted, every turn consists of a number of phases in which you draw and play event cards, place reinforcements, move air wings, troops and resolve battles. The event cards impact the units combat values, boost the troops supply, add extra reinforcements, impact leaders and so on.

Big thank you to my darling daughter who I unwisely made an agreement with over this game. After finding it in the survival section of the store she insisted on buying it for me on the understanding that I would clock up an ungodly number of hours on it and no being asleep in from of my computer allowed. Laughingly I agreed - I mean I like cute junky kiddie games, how bad could it be…?

sigh

I got so bored I actually wrote a guide for it. .

Okay so you have a pony and it walks around in a vaguely cute environment. Unfortunately everything that comes after that feels like someone sketched a vague idea for it out and then forgot to actually implement it. Instead you end up with a weird game which is “watch the loading bars.” Want your pony to work an 8 hour shift? Watch a loading bar for 30 seconds! Want your pony to enjoy a film? Watch that loading bar go! Feel like taking your pony to university and training in a new career? You guessed it! Loading bar! There actually is no content beyond loading bars to basically everything you do, not even tiny animations. I really cannot stress how devoid of content this game is. Even when you have an entire section of items called “Toys” barring two of them (which are also reused as the only two animation in the social interactions with other ponies) all that happens when you play with them is that the icon that represents them appears in a though bubble above your pony for a few seconds.

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

I am nominating Rise of Nations – Extended Edition {RoN-EE} for the 2020 “Labor of Love” award.

RoN-EE is the 2014 update of the “old” RTS from 2003,

when it won several GOTY awards for Big HUGE Games.

Despite its age, RoN has held up well, especially when I am in the mood for a quick Strategic War. A full-scale 1 v 3-or-4 game typically will run 60 minutes {game-time} or less.

Using ** pause /pause **can effectively make RoN-EE a TBS.

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

The game from my childhood and the only strategy that I love to play even now. This is a remastered version of the game from 2003 and one of the most popular strategic games. Extended Edition contains the full contents with the addition of Thrones and Patriots. Rise of Nations offers a lot of nice campaign where our goal is to lead our nation to dominate the world. During the game you have to take care not to be destroyed by other nations but also develop a number of aspects such as economy, science, technology, diplomacy and military power. Each of these aspects will give you the opportunity to develop troops, build new buildings and to develop new opportunities in old buildings, but also move to a new era. With each progression of the game is changing the look and statistics buildings, military units and other things. Each nation has its own unique army as long as the nation still exists. In the game to expand, we have to use wood, stone, food, science, and oil at a later stage of the game, not forgetting that each of these resources can run out of. There is also an advanced diplomacy through which you can contain very beneficial agreement with other nation. In the game you can also play scenarios and multiplayer, but only with friends because no one plays. The game in terms of gameplay has hardly changed, improved graphics and added more resolution size. I like this production and do not regret a single hour spent at the game. Great soundtrack, an old but still nice graphics and a lot of things to do while playing the game. In my opinion this is the best strategy game I’ve ever played, many hours of fun for me. The game I am able to recommend, however, the game also has a bug that irritated me at first because I could not change my resolution because the game was crashing. However, it was manageable change in a text file.

“On the 6th day of the investigation, officials found a diary that belongs to a former, presumably dead employee. We’ve been able to recieve latest entries of the diary and it’s truly shocking! The employee claims that the destruction was caused by a video game. We always knew video games are evil and now it looks like we’re having an actual evidence on our hands. The following text is taken straight from the diary:

“Day 724. Our system is ready to test Sky Battles. We’ve been reported that it might be the game we’re looking for - a Unity game that doesn’t suck. If they’re wrong, the outcome is unpredictable. We’ve been feeding our machine with bad games for far too long. We’d better take a break, but there’s not much time left, we’re doing it for 2 years already…

Tank Universal 2

Tank Universal 2

Excellent, engaging game with a truly disappointing ending. I thought maybe it was still in early access? But it’s supposedly finished. There is no boss fight. You meet the boss, then…no fight. A cutscene with a deus ex machina where the boss, the big bad who was built up as unstoppable over the course of two games, is defeated instantly and effortlessly with no action from the player.

This also makes the blue army’s capture of the Revelation pointless, as it’s never used. It disintegrates on the way to the final level. That is awful story telling. It would’ve been narratively correct to have a boss fight, where you and your blue allies fight to a point of stalemate and seem like you’re going to lose, before the Revelation comes to your aid in your darkest hour, delivering the finishing blow.

When i came across Tank universal 1 when i was only 12 years old or so back when it was a demo on Wild Tanget. my young mind was blown away as to how cool the game was, i never got to finish it back when i was little as i said it was a demo game. and since i had always had trouble convincing my parents about what games i wanted and the fact that they cost money always made them stingy at droping a few bucks for them.

Now i am in my young adult hood in my early 20’s and now that i have a little more financial freedom i bought both this game and its predicessor, and my eyes once again teamed with excitment when i saw these same old games i never got to finish on steam. and after buying both and finishing both i can summerize why i recommend this game.
