Beyond Blue

Beyond Blue

This is a really beautiful underwater game, that could have done with some more time in QA-testing. There are bugs, and obvious UI problems/errors that should have been fixed months before release.

Let’s start with the biggest:

After having finished the game, there was a trio of Remora that I hadn’t scanned. but I could not find them on ANY of the maps.. so I start a new game, to see if there was a new game plus mode, where the game would remember what you’d scanned and what you hadn’t. No such luck. you start over from scratch when it comes to both the story and the scanning.

I’ve loved ocean life ever since I was small. I’ve even considered a career in Marine Biology myself.

Having said that, I think this game is beautiful. The graphics are amazing, and so are the creatures themselves. While I wish there was more variety, the different sea animals we got were good choices. The animations are both smooth and realistic, and the models are stunning.

The different area’s you visit throughout the main story campaign are stunning in their own ways as well. From the shallows of the coast and a small atoll filled with wildlife, to the large and mysterious brine pools in the midnight zone near the boiling sea vents.

Submorse

Submorse

All I need now is a telegraph Morse key gaming mouse…

Submorse is a very good game to casually learn Morse code. It’s pretty addictive too once you start doing the time trials. Walking around in the sub is a nice touch for atmosphere. There’s a basketball and goal to mess around with. There is also a radio you can choose various songs on, although I would suggest you turn off the radio (and turn off success audio) before you try to do Morse code. You will find 3 interactive monitors in the sub. The monitor closest to the basketball goal is the one you do Morse code on. You will also see the internet high scores of the Submorse time trials on one of the other monitors in the sub once you’ve completed a time trial. Another monitor will let you adjust the game settings.

TLDR:

If you want to learn morse code, or really just want to challenge yourself and pick up some cool knowledge along the way, then this game is definitely for you. Even people who might not be interested in morse code, will have a great time playing this game. I know I definitely did.

The only thing I personally felt that was missing from this game was more content. Though it certainly didn’t take away from the fun experience I had with the game.

Virtual Arctic Expedition

Virtual Arctic Expedition

An enjoyable and somewhat scary look at the ocean in the Arctic and what lives beneath and what will be living beneath with global climate change. The Blu but with mp, much more interesting and with a awareness of what we are doing to the Earth and it’s other inhabitants.

Highly recommend.

This a 15 minute mostly cinematic virtual reality experience. There are really only two interactions. You have a laser pointer which you can use to point at things (and get some factoids on those objects which are interactive) and you have a camera to take selfies or take low quality photos of objects around, including marine life & vegetation.

Room-scale is required to start the experience. You have to reach the start button. That’s the only time you’ll use your room-scale. I’m not kidding. They actually thought that was a good idea.

Coral Quest

Coral Quest

Very simplistic game that was obviously designed for phones. A 3rd person runner game where you move your fish on a 3x3 grid collecting shiny objects while avoiding obstacles. Cosmetics are unlocked along the way while you also accumulate currency that can be used to purchase additional characters or accessories.

A cups-and-balls game is presented between levels to win additional currency, as well as almost depressing facts about plastic pollution.

There is some variety in the level design with new environments and obstacles, but it does start to feel like a grind pretty quickly. A nice game to play while listening to music or a podcast.

Game is simple but cute. Young children will probably enjoy the game and the ability to change what fish they are.
