JPN Burst

If you’re already familiar with Hiragana and Katakana and feel like you still mess up sometimes and want something to practice with. This is a good way to do it. I was feeling rusty on katakana so I grabbed this to do some drills and then went ahead and cleared out the hiragana sets as well. The one annoying thing was that everytime you beat a lesson/test it sends you back to the menu to select between school/home/whatever books you’ve bought instead of just bringing you back to the page you had been before.

A good Japanese learning game/software. I got it for free and I don’t know anything about Japanese language. Within an hour, I gained my basic knowledge about Japanese language and letters. The game is fairly challenging and will actually help you think harder, hence it will actually exercise your brain muscle about the language.

A very simple trivia game that requires not only knowledge of historical events, but to have a sense of their order in the timeline. Whoever plays based on trial and error will eventually make it. But achieving this with a low number of attempts is a good challenge.

Great and useful game! The description says “start playing and get smart” and I can assure you that it works! This game trains your brain and makes you faster with math.

I’m not sure if it’s an easter egg or an undocumented feature, but

! typing 0 will show your score and quit.

The framerate is very stable. It runs flawlessly with a GTX 1070, and in fact, it also runs flawlessly without it.

I really appreciate the “pay once, enjoy forever” spirit. No lootboxes or other type of micro-transactions, no annoying DRM nor third-party account. This is better than most AAA games these days.

font is horrible.

Too fast for most people

But I like the difficulty.

I average 90WPM

I will have to say, about the font choice–it is a bit difficult to read, especially in a time crunch. The R’s and A’s are too similar, as are the O’s and D’s, the K’s and X’s, and U’s and V’s. By the way, there is a typo in the description before the level starts–“disappear” is spelled wrong, as “disapear”. Besides all of this, the game has great potential. The graphics are simple but very well done, and the increasing speed of the words makes for a great challenge.

Greatly recommended if you are learning Python and already know the basic stuff. You inspect code and look for dependencies to figure out the puzzle - just like in real life. Music is relaxing and I like the concept a lot.

If you don’t know any programming language it is pretty hard, though.

Unfortunately, the game doesn’t support the German keyboard layout, so entering special characters like [] () = or : is a bit cumbersome.

This game does not touch upon object-oriented programming, nor does it implement try/except blocks. And that’s perfectly acceptable, since I can only imagine the hassle of trying to add those. But once I found out that things like:

  • string slicing

  • concatenation via multiplication (str * int)

  • the ‘break’ keyword

  • elif

are not supported, my eyebrow finally raised. Then there are the things that are partially implemented (ie. maimed) - tuples and dynamic typing. The Python in here is extremely barebones and so is the interpreter. It provides zero feedback on what went wrong, only that it did. And if you’re not careful and don’t use the Ctrl+C clipboard to store the latest version of your script, a syntax error will wipe all of your progress (by automatically restarting the level).

Exercises can not be skipped. Answers are also not provided to someone at the end of their rope. To someone new to Python they will go through the exercises and eventually reach one they can not answer. Not answering the question will not allow them to move on.

A solution should be something like question is asked and if the student gets it wrong 5 times in a row. The answer should be provided.

Why? Because if you are a total noob which I assume this game was made for “This game assumes absolutely zero prerequisite background.,” you will eventually get stuck no matter how much you paid attention to the lessons.

I am not necessarily a beginner to programming but this is a decent educational “game”. Its more of a interactive textbook but I found it useful. I am trying to get a job as a programmer so I am exploring many different resources. This one definitely makes you think and that is a good thing. I feel there is room for improvement and I would love to see more of these types of “games”. I see a lot of potential in this and I feel it could be expanded much further. One thing people need to understand is that is only a resource for learning Python. When you finish it you will most likely still not really know what you are doing but it will edge you in the right direction and allow you to piece things together easier. Once finished you will most likely be able to design a very simple program but to get to a actual payable level you are going to need more then just this and a ton of practice. I do recommend this for beginner programmers and or anyone who has not tried Python before. I have taken classes in other languages and worked with them for a few years but had never worked with Python so I found it interesting. Overall I think its worth the money. Investing in yourself is never a bad idea especially for this price.

I love this game. You don’t have to know another language to play. You pick which order you want the languages to give you clues. If one language doesn’t give you a hint then just click a few times to see other languages. You can often tell from the foreign word, especially the more complex words are very similar to English and other languages. Russian never helped me. It’s totally different. You often have to think of synonyms, like the clue is “thema” which is like theme and it’s a seven letter word that starts with S and has a J in it…. subject. Part of it is finding the words, and part of it is making them fit together. The later levels will have four or five words in a letter grid, and it’s like putting together a puzzle to fit the words in… You can use letters more than once, but you can’t cross lines.

This is a really nice game that includes several languages, including English, Russian, German, Portuguese, Spanish and French. This game will help you to learn or familiarize yourself with other languages.

There are 300 different levels to complete to unlock all the achievements. The game takes approximately 7 hours to complete. All the achievements are unlocked by completing all the levels, therefore none of the achievements are missable.
