Secrets Of Soil

Secrets Of Soil

This almost gets a thumbs-up. However, I have to give it a thumbs-down due to the absurdly sanctimonious narrative.

This is amazing for 80% of the game. It’s like an interactive simulation that a prominent Natural History Museum might have on display. Go into this as sober or as high as you like, and take flight through psychedelic soil, while learning the science behind how it produces almost all of the food we eat. Amazing. It almost pains me to not be able to recommend it.

Why can’t I? The end of the game has such a ridiculously pessimistic view of things like global warming, and plowing the f♥♥♥ing soil, that you’d think the world was guaranteed to end before 2022. Then they throw in ridiculous “don’t get me wrong” moments, such as: “don’t get me wrong, chemicals used to grow crops in infertile areas did save tens of millions of human lives, and entire races of people would have otherwise collectively died slow and painful deaths by mass starvation, BUT!!! Chemicals are still pure evil, because…”

If you want a good alternative to LSD, this is for you :D

But in all seriousness, this game is a really fun way to look at and educate about soil, and the effects agriculture has on it. Very well explained and definitely recommended for everyone who wants to learn more about ways to save our planet.

Nice work.

Operation Deep Magic: Cryptanalysis

Operation Deep Magic: Cryptanalysis

Operation Deep Magic is a detail-oriented, decryption simulator for learning how to break codes. Very good trainer. It’s defintely much easier to follow along the concise steps in this simulator than to study articles and textbooks.

I like:

  • real code breaking experience and practices

  • automatic math explanations for my analytical work

  • puzzles that are super hard and also very easy

  • all puzzles are real-life communication, math, and computer problems

  • real, NSA-approved encryption that is adopted internationally

Let me start off by saying that this is probably one of the most deeply technical games on Steam. The cryptanalysis techniques utilized in this are actual, real-life techniques used in academic cryptography and spy alike.

How do I know this? I’m a cryptographer. :)

By playing this game and learning how these techniques work, you will gain an understanding of how these attacks are performed. If you’re not familiar with the basics of cryptography, this game is likely too difficult for you, but there’s no better time to start than right now,

Beautiful Graphics, Inspiring music, Calming patterns, but exciting when you finally “get” one. This game brings natural graphics to life. I had worse than bad experiences with cheap plastic spirographs “made for kids” as a child, so I am astounded at what it COULD look like with the right tools. I didn’t realize so many awesome shapes come from such simple movements.

This game seems like it could be frustrating, but the music is so nice it distracts from any “mistakes”. But even the mistakes are impressive, so why not keep trying. There is no negative feedback if you don’t get it correct, but you get a nice PING and the completed drawing when you do. The music ebbs and flows in such a way as to sometimes create pregnant pauses as you hold your breath and see if you finally got it. The music is a loop but so long that it does not seem repetitive at all. I could listen to it for hours, but I don’t want to bias my game clock, LOL. I think this game is good for all ages, and a good problem solving experience. I’ve even thought about how I could maybe make some of these moving planks and things to try to draw these patterns on paper perhaps.

By way of introduction, let me say that I’m a college mathematics professor. I played through the game in a few hours, and enjoyed almost every minute of it even though I knew almost immediately how to solve many of the puzzles. If you’ve never done parametric/polar coordinate math, some of the shapes or how to make them will be genuinely surprising.

The game is in my opinion a great way to intuitively learn how compound motions can produce a variety of interesting figures. I enjoyed it so much that I plan to use it in a math class this very semester, along side traditional Mathematica-based computations. An “education mode” or “education edition” would be a very welcome expansion of the game, where completed puzzles could also show you some of the mathematics behind them…but I wouldn’t want that to in any way distract a player who wants to play it as-is.

I’ve really taken to this. A really calming game, with a blend of meditation and mindfulness, all backed up by a gorgeous soundtrack and some really nice visuals. Less a game, and more an experience, but a delightfully relaxing experience.

Synonymy

Synonymy

This is a minimalist mobile ported word puzzle game based on thesaurus synonyms. You are given a word and you must click on 4 different synonyms until you reach the target word.

The game deceptively credits Richard Dawkins as a narrator, which is essentially fraud as the game features no narration, so right there the developers are going to burn in hell for sheer lack of ethics there. Aside from that, this is a shonky minimalist mobile port, with no fullscreen option and next to no real gameplay at all. You could do the same thing just putting your finger on words in a dictionary, and if you think that’s fun, then great, you don’t need to buy this game. Also, if you do have a dictionary lying around at home, it has better graphics than this game.

I like the concept but think the price is… too much for what it is. You literally click on matching synonyms… and thats it. The execution, however, is terrible - obvious synonyms are missing (e.g. none of distort, disfigure, twist, warp or deform are synonyms for gnarl), and sometimes the synonyms don’t make any sense (I think conceal was a synonym for concealment?).

As a Review already mentioned:

https://steamcommunity.com/id/cxzman/recommended/342890/

Quote:

The rules are simple : you’re given a target word (say “Silence”), and given a starting word (say “Crash”), and a cloud of synonyms you can pick from. The goal is to get closer and closer to the target word by picking the right words from the words cloud. The thing is, there’s not only synonyms in the cloud, but also antonyms, sometimes just analog terms (otherwise you wouldn’t get very far)… but not always.

Turn on all the lights

Passionate game for a boring hour or two. Don’t let the first levels' difficulty fool you, it gets really tricky at the end. I believe it has potential for more levels. Overall it is a nice puzzle game: clean visuals, clear mechanics and provoking puzzles. Ps: Foget rules of real world electricity, colored current is fun!

Game is a neat little puzzle game. Unlike the first game that seemed to drop some concepts, this game introduces most of its concepts early on and then develops on them as the game goes on. The last puzzle stomped me for a little bit but by that point it’s like puzzle inception (or puzzleception if you’re nasty), a puzzle inside a puzzle inside a puzzle and so on. Overall I just wished there were more puzzles but I still enjoyed it and thought it was pretty good and well worth the money. Definitely give this one a go.

Mini Words: Polyglot

Mini Words: Polyglot

I love this game. You don’t have to know another language to play. You pick which order you want the languages to give you clues. If one language doesn’t give you a hint then just click a few times to see other languages. You can often tell from the foreign word, especially the more complex words are very similar to English and other languages. Russian never helped me. It’s totally different. You often have to think of synonyms, like the clue is “thema” which is like theme and it’s a seven letter word that starts with S and has a J in it…. subject. Part of it is finding the words, and part of it is making them fit together. The later levels will have four or five words in a letter grid, and it’s like putting together a puzzle to fit the words in… You can use letters more than once, but you can’t cross lines.

Real player with 38.6 hrs in game

This is a really nice game that includes several languages, including English, Russian, German, Portuguese, Spanish and French. This game will help you to learn or familiarize yourself with other languages.

There are 300 different levels to complete to unlock all the achievements. The game takes approximately 7 hours to complete. All the achievements are unlocked by completing all the levels, therefore none of the achievements are missable.
