The Seven Years War (1756-1763)

The Seven Years War (1756-1763)

yes this game is like total war but there are some crucial differences,

-of course one man cannot provide the same graphics as creative assembly but this is already the only negativ difference, allthough it should be mentioned that the graphics are amazing for a one man project

-this game is a rts: no round-based movement exploits like in total war, so army movement on the campaign map is also part of stretegic gameplay as it should be, no helplessly watching armies taking your undefended cities

I am going to be as honest as possible here. I am an old grognard who loves games varying in compexity from Gary Grigsby, through the Scourge of War series to Total War and some of the great mods that have been made. The point is if there is a new grand stategy game that comes out I will buy it. No refunds, I will gradually work hard to understand the game and if it isn’t quite a diamond in the rough to start with I’ll be patient and revisit from time to time.

There is a huge amount of promise in this game. The mechanics make sense and I do love the passion that has gone into making this game. I will say straight away that it gets a recommend from me simply because of the ambition and effort of the one man who put it together.

Sigma Theory: Global Cold War

Sigma Theory: Global Cold War

Sigma Theory is a good niche product that was incorrectly exposed to the public. Yes indeed, it is a turn-based strategy game about spies, but it is far from Phantom Doctrine or any other action-packed tactical title. Jeez, in the very old “Spy vs Spy” game was much more direct action! Sigma Theory is text-based. It is a board game by the set of rules and overall dynamics. Think of Battlestar Galactica, think of Monopoly. In the realm of video games, think of The Witcher Adventure Game or maybe Plague Inc: Evolved , in a way.

This game is a dream come true for me. I’ve always been a fan of the spy genre (video games, tabletop games, tv shows, movies, board games, card games), I think Sid Meyers Cover Action is one of the best espionage games ever made; with Invisible Inc and Phantom Doctrine coming in at close second; totally different games but they mange to make you feel like you’re a real intelligence officer on the job. Now there is a new spy game in town and I have to say this game is the type of spy game I’ve been looking for, for years! Ever since I played Streets of Chaos (it’s a game where you run a criminal origination. You send out gang members to do crime all over a fictional city) and another hidden gem called Black Closet (in the game you’re like the president of boarding school, and you send out your team to investigate students; to avoid scandals from destroying the school).  I thought to myself, both of these games have great micromanagement mechanics and they’re not very graphic heavy, it would be great to have a spy game that played a lot like those 2 games, and now that game is here!

I wanted to and tried to like this game and I found much to like. Firstly it is probably my favourite genre (modern geo-politics) and there is alot unique and cool about it. That said there is just too many things that are either tedious, too ill-explained (even with the GodsNspy addon) or just don’t work like they should either by design or not. Lastly there are some things that just should be available to everyone and not as DLC. The modding tool paid DLC is inadequete considering it cost money. Furthermore, given the inept explanitions of game mechanics, the GodNspy addon should also be part of the package, aswell as offer more information.

This is a very difficult game to evaluate. First - it’s very deep and complex. They aren’t kidding when they say “Geo-Political Simulator”. It goes much deeper into politics and economic simulation than even paradox games. This game will only be of interest to you if you’re interested in politics, and know at least a little bit about macroeconomics. This isn’t Tropico, Democracy or Hearts of Iron. All of those games are great, but they simply don’t compare to this by sheer depth.

This game doesn’t pussy-foot around, it treats you like an adult. There are hundreds of different laws and taxes you can change, thosuands of characters you can interact with, and enough graphs to satisfy even the stingiest statistics professor. You can play as any nation in the world (besides a handful of micronations like the Vatican), as opposition political parties, or even as an illegal groupр, such as the Kurds in Syria or the rebels in Donbass (although the meat of the game is when you play as a head of state). Your actions affect not just your popularity and budget, but also many macroeconomic factors. Factors such as inflation, unemployment and crime are all inter-related, and you’ll often times find yourself trying to reach a happy compromise. There really isn’t any other game like this. This is due to the fact that Eversim is a company that creates simulation games for intl' organizations and their mindset is very clear with even their consumer-level products, such as P&R.

The Year is 2015.

I am the new Prince of Monaco.

Little do they know that I am a semi-GOD who has the gift of Immortality.

From day one I start my rule by granting all rights like Poligamy, Same Sex Marriage and Legalising Drugs; soon, hedonistic parties and drug filled orgies would be a common thing to find in the streets of Larvotto and in the high-rises of Fontvieille.

I banned all the heretic foreign languages and forced everyone to speak the divine Monegasque.

But it wasn’t enough, I needed to expand my faith despite having only 30000 loyal servants to my cause.

This game is fun. HOWEVER it’s got issues that become hard to ignore the more you play. Especailly if you know anything about developmental economics.

1. The vanilla game doesn’t handle population very well. The population of any country will continue to grow untill the game crashes. Some mods (Human develoment for example) try to address this issue but end up with the opposite problem where countries will decrease in population untill their economy breaks down and they fall into anarchy. There’s basically nothing you can do to prevent either of these fates.

Sound Strategy game and brings me enjoyment. There are some bugs but hope they will be fixed soon. This game is worth the money.

I like the game, I am having fun playing it. I think it has one main problem, the production process could be better. Once you choose a city for production you no longer know how many production points are available. It would be nice to have production points shown so you can figure out how many of a particular item can be produced and also a max button would be good, just press max for an item and the max amount will be set to production of that city. And also since the last update the game is hard to start, have to press start three or four times before it will load. Get these fixed and I’m sure I will give it a thumbs up!

Stronghold: Warlords

Stronghold: Warlords

i love this. i want all of your other games to be like this but there are a few things i would like. the fire lances i think is the best unit. put 4 of them into a siege tower and walk it through an army of axe men. i would like to see them in difrent clothing though. they give me some sort of native american vibe with the leather and hair going down to the shoulders. i think they would look good in the bow men uniform or as the guy with the fire grenades. they just dont fit i think with the games look but they are so good i use them all the time. in stronghold crusader 2 there is a unit called the ranger. they have bows as thier main attack but can switch to a sword. in japan there were sameri that used a long bow as thier primary but also had a katana because of how iconic it was. i would like to see a unit that is this games ranger like counterpart. i think if you ised orange sameri armor and gave them the ability to call horses to ride like the templars from crusader, that would be realy cool to see! it would also be accurate to ancient japan warfare.

Warlords system is shit. If you take into account that on some maps you are playing against 3 or more opponents that means that you can be facing up to X times troops count, so if the limit is 150, then the computer can attack with 450 troops. Add the warlords into the mix and that number goes up to 600 or 700 to 150 of your own. It is frustrating to even move out at this point because the computer also reinforces at higher rates. Add the constant saving lags, the crashes after loading saved game and the constant messages from the warlords that keep jumping out at the worst possible moment and you have a game which is far from polished. To the developers at Firefly Studios, if anyone is reading this, consider adding like a timer delay before the AI can retake a warlord via diplomatic points in case of capture by force or a condition that if there are player troops in the keep then diplomatic option should be disabled for other players. For this last one I had troops in the keep, babysitting warlord and the AI claimed him with diplomacy points. I mean WTF.

Stronghold Legends: Steam Edition

Stronghold Legends: Steam Edition

Stronghold Legends is kind of the the odd child of the entire Stronghold franchise, being the only title featuring fantasy elements.

Arbitrarily, it is also the title which divided people the most in regard whether to like it or not in the past.

Personally, I believe it to be one of the most innovative Stronghold games due to the very fact that a lot of different new mechanics and also tactics were introduced with the likes of giants or dragons as well as magic. Granted, it didn’t look great back then and even remastered it still doesn’t, but gameplay wise it has more than enough depth to make up for it, even although that depth is more shallow than with other Stronghold games due to the fact that the devs tried to open the target audience a little with those fantasy elements.

So if Steam logged all the time I had playing this game on the Disc, I would legit have over a couple thousand hours. This game was my childhood, and a few years ago I convinced my friends to play the multiplayer with me. Once we were finally all into it and knew the mechanics, they closed the multiplayer servers not two months later. Devestated, I still played through all the single player modes, but I did so long for the multiplayer back. But, Steam delivered, and upgraded the game to the Steam edition, reviving the community for the game and allowing us to play multiplayer again (While adding a few new cool features! Workshop is so nice). While my friends and I (Sadly) don’t play this game as much currently, as League of Legends has consumed our lives, whenever we get bored, or when I’m feeling in a particularly mediaval mood, this is always the first game I turn to, as every time I play it I am filled with that sense of nastolgia, and am able to relax to the nice sounds of my catapults tearing down my enemy’s walls.
