I have found a hidden gem. If you like Portal or any puzzle game like it, you’ll like this one.

The Game Itself?

Pretty good. Rarely did I find any glitches or bugs.

Difficulty is pretty good, though the game does get BLOODY hard in some puzzles (I’m looking at you, Battlefield)

Well-designed puzzles that are interesting, unique, and just downright fun (Pinball machine, sneaking mission, etc…)

Puzzles actually require thinking and effort to finish, which is nice to see.

The puzzles and gameplay are pretty good, I’d say!

In my reviews I often talk about just how many developers treat their games like products. Well, technically, those are the products, of course, but… you can’t create anything really beautiful just by doing your job. If you’ll do your job good enough, you may come up with a really good product, but that’ll be just that. A product. While we all know that video games can be… something more than that. Much more. When Miller brothers started creating their MYST? It wasn’t because they wanted to make a popular game. Heck, they weren’t even gamers. They just had that certain vision and they really wanted to turn it into reality. To share it with the others. To let the others dive into it and experience it together. And it’s not just words. You can clearly feel such things. From Westwood Studious' magical worlds of The Legend of Kyrandia and Lands of Lore to Cyberdreams’s I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, based on Harlan Ellison’s short story. That certain artistic touch? That special something that makes a game more than just a game? As long as you treasure it as much as I do, I want to introduce you to one of my most favorite independent developers. Please, welcome – Supergiant Games.

Bastion 2012

When Bastion came out it was at the beginning of the Indie craze. People were first starting to realize that amazingly fun games could come from tiny studios with no budget. Well now in 2017 the term Indie game has all but lost its meaning both financially, and terms of team size. But at the time, a game with such deep combat, definitive flavor, and overall polish was a treat.

Bastion does a good job of grabbing you with the colorful paint-style world that appears beneath your feet as you move forward. Every action you do is narrated by a grandfatherly voice that explains the story and smaller moments. There was a time early in the game when I walked off the edge of the platforms and the narrator said “And that’s the end of the Kid’s story….I’m just kidding.” And I respawn and he says “The kid goes back for another round.” It was a charming break of the 3rd wall.

Lightmatter

Lightmatter

Lightmatter took me 9 hours to complete both endings and while I wasn’t really satisfied with either ending, the journey to get there was a lot of fun. Lightmatter isn’t shy when it shows its love for Portal but it is really heavy on the mechanics from The Talos Principle. Instead of jammers, you’ve got spotlights and instead of connectors you’ve got photon connectors.

PROS

  • great antagonist. Virgil is no Cave Johnson or GlaDos but he is suitably condescending and megalomaniacal. I hated him but in a good way.

Lightmatter is a first person ‘escape the facility’ exercise that uses light to create pathways through dark places. You play from a 1st person perspective as a journalist who is visiting the company headquarters for a publicity event. Evidently, a system failure has occurred and the building has been evacuated, leaving you behind. The CEO provides guidance and instruction (via an announcement system) to help you exit through 38 chapters. The music and voice overs are engaging and the landscape is your basic industrial complex with lots of moving parts, buttons, levers, etc.

ELEA

ELEA

I went around all the locations, looked at all the objects, read the text in the form of notes, books, tablets, the calculation is exactly for this. I can say: really beautiful graphics and room design from the point of view of the interior. Good work with light and bloom and light dispersion effects, the emphasis is on creating darkness in rooms, but at the same time it does not seem like it is not enough. As for the music, it is a masterpiece, the author of the music perfectly conveyed the atmosphere of a melancholic space travel. And an important part is the plot, which creates the right mood, perhaps it is typical for this kind of games, but it is not repulsive, but rather intriguing. All of the above creates an emotional and memorable atmosphere. A question for the developers: how could you f*ck up such a project and not complete the plot in the second part, or at least in this part? I’m really sorry.

Death Squared

Death Squared

I freaking love this game. Writing a review partially because this game deserves an “overwhelmingly positive” and I’d like to help take it there. I’ve played with 4-5 people in the party mode for a dozen or so levels, and done half the main levels so far playin' with my dad. In terms of a puzzle game, yes, does the job, makes you think, then makes you think in a completely different way, very satisfying.

I think what most makes this game stand out for me is the fun in the actual death and failure, especially playing with someone else. Sometimes you get some deaths in just for fun and to see the animation and dialogue…and to annoy your partner, of course….

Real player with 18.6 hrs in game

A simple idea well executed, a funny co-op puzzle experience.

Co-op puzzle

In Death Squared you must cooperatively solve puzzles. Each player has a cube-character that can only move, there is no other function. Each player has to move to their respective endpoint to solve the puzzle. Along the way you have to stand on switches to change the level, dodge lasers tied to one character, stand on each other’s head to serve as bridge, not die, and most importantly not kill the other! This is a typical game to just start playing! Play only co-op though. You can control two characters with a keyboard, so a perfect snuggle game! Although… it will most probably start a fight…

Going the Distance

Going the Distance

This is a fun launcher game that is super relaxing and has nothing bad going on at all. Good gameplay, very nice story and characters as well.

I would suggest playing this game if your into horror or launcing games. Though to be aware does start slow, though it picks up super quickly in later levels.

FULL playthrough here (not on story(easy) mode once it uploads): https://youtu.be/SpLKHxlZ4Kc

This game is hard, but the story is amazing and it’s a ton of fun. I definitely didn’t see the game going how it did, but I loved every second of the main story. I will say I believe some of the items on the 2nd stage are impossible to get (mainly pothole 7, possibly 8 I couldn’t even find the thing in pothole 8 7 I just couldn’t possibly get to the left far enough while falling unless there’s a mechanic with the rover that’s not explained. Honestly this was worth every cent of $4.99 The visuals are amazing the play is fun even though grindy as a mf and i hate the blimp stage they’re so long. ACHIEVEMENTS DO NOT WORK AT ALL I beat the whole game and I’m 0 out of 35 which is a complete shame. If you want an amazing game though buy this. Now I have to go take my exam after playing this game for 13 hours straight and not studying adult choices xD. It was a struggle, but I went the distance (insert Cake song).
