DarkEnd

DarkEnd

I own about 300 games, of which 30+ of them are RPG Maker games. I happen to like the RPG Maker genre.

DarkEnd is among the very best RPG Maker games that I have played.

I spend more than 100+ hours playing this game, and enjoyed it tremendously, and that is why I decide to write a review of DarkEnd to share my experiences.

In DarkEnd you can play as one of 4 different Primary Characters, and each of these 4 character has a very unique and intriguing storyline. You can also select a Secondary Character from the remaining 3 characters. The storyline is quite complex and convoluted and you normally would not know who is good or bad until the very end. Each of the character has their own unique reasons to go into the DarkEnd, and the outcome is also different and unique. Playing this game is like reading a detective novel for me, and each stage of the game give me a better glimpse of the story.

First off, i wanted to try out this game to see how it is. Sadly, i did not find the game that good. First off, i will post my pro’s for this game:

ONE OTHER NOTE: This is a rpg-maker game. These don’t bother me, but if they bother you, the reader, feel free to pass on this game. Graphic style also does not bother me. Also, i was not paid to make an review. I don’t believe in that method either. Even if i was given a free one, i would use my unbiased review to either give it positive or negative.

Lord of the Seal

Lord of the Seal

8 hours in, and I’m not planning on stopping.

After thoroughly searching through all of the options in the game menu, I can finally change my review verdict from “Not Recommend” to “Recommend”.

Lord of the Seal isn’t for players who are looking for great graphics or immersive worlds.

This game is more geared towards players looking for a basic, simple, and fun RPG grind.

Pros:

  • Classic dungeon-crawler (kill, farm, sleep at inn, repeat)

  • Simple combat

  • Fast gameplay (no flashy effects, quick animations)

Eternal Realm

From start to finish this game had no plot. It pretended to have a plot but instead it had disappointment. And a sequel hook.

The combat system was at least interesting; you have turns equal to your alive and aware party members, and can dole them out as you please. Stamina prevents you (in theory) from just having Berserkergang von Killstick from just going four times every time and chopping everything.

Unfortunately there was a lot of grinding. A lot of grinding!! I admit to cheating to get past the grinding at the very end of the game. The interesting and strategy-changing accessories and equips didn’t unlock soon enough either.

This JRPG is a dumpster fire. It has a potentially interesting base for the combat system, which it calls a “Free-turn Stamina Battle System.” Basically, you get turns equal to the number of alive and action-capable party members you have in the battle, and may distribute them freely among your characters. This is balanced by everything, even basic attacks, costing SP.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t a big fan of the game balance or how the system worked even so, being as how it generally broke down to playing as normal (or just ignoring one character) in most cases, but ultimately even if it was better, this game would have squandered it both by not having many options available for your characters until late in the game (like, until almost the end game, characters will only be able to wield one physical element, or one magical element and suck at one physical element… and enemies have varied resistances that it is useful to overcome), the game being horrifically grindy, and how it basically doesn’t have a story at all, except for a vague sequel hook.

Decent rpgmaker game with a surprising amount of class choices, not only for the companions, but for the main character as well. All with different skills. The maps are large and filled with secrets.

But the whole game is being dragged down by 2 major pains in the ass. The ridiculous frequency of the random encounters and limited line of sight. Exploring everything, trying to do all the quests and finding all the secrets is a huge chore. Even though most of the time you can reliably skip encounters sometimes you get them literally every 3 steps. The game constantly wastes your time. As for the line of sight there are a lot of areas where you can see in a small radius around you and that’s only if you have a torch. Trying to navigated labyrinths when you can’t see shit only leads to unnecessary back tracking and constant encounters. There are items to prevent encounters, but along side torches you will have to keep opening and navigating through the menu. Either way it’s constant interruptions and pointless hindrances. The game is so much better in well lit areas or in areas without random encounters. I know I’ve missed 2 bosses and an important quest, but I can’t possibly be arsed to go again through previous areas.

The Summoner

The Summoner

This game was okay. It scratches an itch of needing a basic old school rpg experience. One thing I will give it is that you could go places out of order and see how well you fare. Everything is totally simplistic but, sometimes that is just what you need. I would recommend just because I want to support more people making these and, although simple, it was solid.

Now to give this game credit is real hard for me.

There is nothing and I mean absolut nothing special speaking for this game.

They sell it as an classic JRPG…..that is right if you turn back the time to Final Fantasy I (of course with higher resolutions).

The world is dull, towns consists of a few buildings. Everything looks just dull. The dungeons are populated with up to 2 different enemy mobs. No random encounters, non fighting outside of dungeons, enemies are visible and don’t respawn.

Leveling up is nearly useless because your party only gets 1-2 points in attributs and it looks like the enemies are leveling up too.

Daedalic Complex

Rpg game quite generic and in my view does not bring anything new to what is seen in similar rpgmaker games, in general it is not bad, I recommend it on offer or come in some economic bundle.

Overview

The story is about heroine trying to find a cure for an unknown disease. This game was made with RMXP. It has J-RPG Turn-Based Battle with unique Custom Script. Gameplay will mainly focus on battle enemy by using items.

Story

One upon a time there is an ever peaceful village. But one night, it’s been invaded by monsters. Bringing an unknown disease to the villager. The legend says “Meradic Herb” which growth far away can be used to cure this disease. Despise what seems to be dangerous, the heroine ultimately decides to go there to find a way to help everyone.

Features

  • Item Synergy – You need to rely on using items to perform any traditional command-based JRPG battle such as normal attack and skills. If you run out of certain items, you will be unable to perform certain actions. Twist it a bit with Tech Upgrade to come up with difference effects out of the same type of items.

  • Familiar Partner – In this game, you’re alone. But you can choose to have an A.I. Partner traveling with you. In which you can indirectly command it. You can also use cooperate action for a greater damage or ask it to stay in defend stance.

  • Defend Break – You convert half of your receiving damage to your defend command. Which you can unleash it back to your enemy while performing defend (defend quarter damage received). Your limit depends on your DEF value.

  • Guarantee Escape – Escape command in this game is guaranteed to have 100% success rate. You can opt out of battle anytime you desire.

  • Aggressive Ailment – When you use your ailment, it will always have a high success rate at 95%. While if the enemy uses it, the success rate is kept at a lower, default rate. So understanding each ailment, stocking item and using it. At the right enemy and at the right time is also an important aspect of the game. Especially in later area.

  • Difficulty Selection – Aside from Hard Mode is harder. Hard Mode requires a different approach in order to win. Due to certain structures of the game, you can’t rely on what’s work in Normal Mode.

Catacombs 1: Demon War

Catacombs 1: Demon War

Just finished the game.

It is short as is stated and contains around 15 screens in total. I thought the story was totally ok and the writing was surprisingly good. There is a lot of variety in monster types and combats are quite nicely executed. The game - while not hard when I discovered I can flee from combats - was hardest in the beginning and I ended tha game at level 5.

The only thing which got more frustrating was that the further you got the further you had to retrace your steps back to town to heal and buy spells. But that was somewhat mitigated by the fact that you could pick up town portal scrolls and also carry a lot of healing potions but most importantly escape combats with good success.

UPDATE: After this review and the following discussion, the developer quickly released an update to fix the balancing problems. So essentially, I’ve been paying 5 bucks to be his beta tester, thank you very much. The update fixes some of the problems, but not all of them; at least, you can’t get through the game by simply spamming the same two attacks forever. We’ll see what the future holds.

=========================================================================

TL;DR: Don’t spend money on this. It has like 2 hours of playtime, most of it boring grind.
