Cave Nightmare

Cave Nightmare

Hello!

Thank you for sharing your game for us to play on Steam!

I had a lot of fun playing your game and finished all 10 levels in 43 minutes as well as grabbing all 5 of those achievements. The game is small but very complete and definitely worth it for the price. The character art and animations are smooth and each level has its own clear increase in difficulty, building in complexity as you progress through them. I didn’t encounter any bugs or issues whilst navigating levels, and even checked corners, walls and anything I thought would potentially trigger a problem. The controls are easy to understand and simple which makes the game play accessible to people of all ages or experience. This game can be enjoyed on both Controller and keyboard depending on the individuals preference.

Cave Nightmare is another asset flip from ImperiumGame. This time they took a template for a 2D retro pixel top down stealth game from Yoyogames/GameMaker Studio 2, changed a couple of things, and dumped it on Steam as if they wrote it themselves. Copying someone else’s work and calling it your own is a real nasty, morally void cash grab.

They did this before when they asset flipped Mad Bus, also known as ZigZag Infinite Runner Game by yönetici. And they’ve done it several other times as well.

One Deck Dungeon

One Deck Dungeon

One Deck Dungeon is a lot of fun! You play an adventurer who decends into a dungeon made up of randomly drawn cards that you must overcome (or run away from). Fighting and disabling traps is resolved via dice rolls which are mitigated by your Skills. The number of dice is determined by your equipment. It’s a very clever and pretty game.

However, 13 hours in, I just stomped all the Fearless (hardest) mode dungeons with my Healing Spec Paladin. I mean, it wasn’t even close, even when she got completely unlucky. (for proof, feel free to check the screenshots on my profile) Perhaps Healadins are just overpowered once you know what’s going on.

One deck dungeon is a very faithful interpretation of the board game, and this translates into a very fun, albeit slightly repetitive experience.

At its heart, one deck dungeon is a simple dice game where you roll dice of 4 different colours in an attempt to overcome enemy encounters by using the dice to fill in the boxes on the enemy card. Dice can only be used to fill boxes of the same colour as the die and if the number on the die is higher than the value on the box. Any unfilled boxes then apply penalties in the form of damage or wasted time at the end of the round. At the end of each encounter you can then choose an additional die for future encounters, a skill which can be used to manipulate your dice in various ways, or experience towards your character level. This process then repeats until you eventually reach the boss or perish in the attempt.

Oneiro

Oneiro

Disclaimer: My actual play time is about 15 hours and I have only seen half the game. Yes it’s difficult but in a great way.

Oneiro is perhaps the very definition of “greater than the sum of its parts.” On the surface, it may look like something you’ve seen or played before, but underneath… Ah… Underneath…

There is something beautiful to the “nightmare” of the labyrinth: a transcendent quality to the game wherein its dimensions coalesce into something more. You might say, “What TF is this dude on?” Well sit down and let me tell it to ya mostly straight because this game hooked my apathetic @ss like a grappling hook in a flying spear.

Oneiro is a first-person roguelike action RPG featuring rock-solid gameplay, dead-serious challenge, and a shocking amount of extremely clever and effective design decisions. It’s honestly one of the best games I’ve played in years. If you love roguelikes, King’s Field, Morrowind, or just good action games, at this price it’s an absolute must-buy.

Its core combat is fundamentally well-designed because all damage can be avoided through skill, although doing so is easier said than done. There are several weapon types, each of which features primary and alternate (usually charge-up) attacks. Special mention goes to the default fist weapon, which has several alternate attacks depending on when you right-click during your auto-combo.

MANY OF THE CRASHES HAVE BEEN FIXED.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE OLDER REVIEWS.

The developer of the game actually tries to fix the bugs and crashes in this game (check the games update history). If your game crashes it (usually) sends a crash report to the developer automatically or you can simply make a post about it and you’ll likely get a response.

Anyways, actual review.

It’s a fun game. It’s a pretty simple rogue-like that is easy to get into but difficult enough that it’s actually fun. It doesn’t have tons of game mechanics you need to learn to enjoy it (I beat the game on my second try). It’s basically just your HP, Mana and positioning. No need to worry about breaking all your bones and being hungry or tired every 5 minutes. :) It’s actually pretty fair to the player and doesn’t feel like constant waves of RNG trying to make you lose. You get quite a bit of content for the price. There are a lot of spells/items to try and the enemies actually feel unique (they each have different spells/speeds/resistances). It takes about 1-3 hours to complete a run.

I totally adore this game, but the crashes! Still very painful, even after the various updates. I don’t mind having paid for this game, even if I may end up shelving it, because it has the potential to become unplayable. I’d just consider the payment a charitable donation to the devs. They deserve it, regardless. This is a super fun little game. I can see myself putting in over 100 hours into it. I grew up on ASCII rpgs. I said, ASCII, y’all. Haha. This game scratches that itch for me. I really do love it, but the crashes coupled with the current save mechanism makes for some very painful experiences.

To begin with, I’ll mention that the base game without dlc is available for free at te4.org, so you can always just take a look at it and decide later if you want to pay for it because it’s one of the best games you’ve ever seen.

I’m the kind of person who leaves a game on while I’m doing other things (in fact I have another game open right now), but nonetheless, my 3k hours in this game is a fair indication of how much I love it. I’m not blind to its faults, so I will mention them later, but first I’m going to talk about what makes this game worth all the time I’ve spent in it.

I 100% recommend this game and I feel like I am still not giving it enough praise in that statement. BEST. GAME. EVER.

Not a whole lot I can say that hasn’t been said before over the 20 or so years this game has been around. I didn’t start playing it until last year and the first dozen or so runs I thought this game was ‘overhyped garbo’. It took many deaths and about 60-80 hours of ‘off & on’ play (mainly when buzzed) before I was able to begin seeing the sheer beauty this game has to offer, hidden behind it’s incredibly retro graphics and at times obtuse UI/stat boxes.

HyperParasite

HyperParasite

Been following this game since it was first showcased at Milan Games Week back in 2018. All I can say is…WOW. The game was very different back then, now it feels and play really smooth and polished for an Early Access game. I’m a sucker for everything 80s, and this game has it all: tons of cameos/references/quotes from 80s movies, cartoons and games, a very cool synthwave OST and a great atmosphere.

It can be HARD at the beginning, but believe me, give it some time and you will unlock new stuff, characters, weapons, etc., and it will be amazing. Every run feels different, it’s incredible how much stuff there’s to it. You won’t regret it.

Quite possibly the best modern rogue-lite on steam

Hyperparasite’s formula for designing a richly crafted love letter to the 80s certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. The entire game itself is filled with cheeky references to 80s pop culture. From the outset, the combat & gameplay loop is what you should expect from a well designed twin stick rogue-lite; tight, fluid controls, procedurally generated level pathways & randomized upgrades that are never the same during your next play thorough. Permadeath is a factor that shouldn’t put you off as the gameplay loop is designed to keep you replaying the core concept until you completely finish it. From start to finish the complete experience should take you around 2-3 hours, providing you have all the sub-levels unlocked. Which i might add are fully accessible in the wrong millennium update.

VERLIES II

VERLIES II

When you rage quit from a game and you immediately want to give it another try, you know you’ve got something special.

Verlies II is a first person dungeon crawler, with real-time combat and grid based deplacement.

And it wants you dead.

Yep, according to the Master, death is the only thing you rightly deserve.

Let’s prove him wrong, shall we?

In order to do that, you’ll have to master combat precision, actively aiming at the monsters, and timing, to block with your shield and manage breath/endurance. It’s a fun and solid system and you may soon try to block “frame perfect” in the vain hope it will mitigate more damage :p or you will die miserably for it was obvious this 5th strike in a row was dumb.

Real player with 41.5 hrs in game

Punishing, wicked roguelike gridbased dungeon crawler with active combat that requires timing, strategy and actually landing your mouse cursor on the enemies as you swing. Lots of ways to combine your skills and create the build you want. Has a few interesting puzzles, one at the end of each level. This game does all it can to work against you, so that you really do feel you accomplish something every time you make it just a little further. But there are many ways to die, and permadeath is what’s at stake if you fail.

ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery)

ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery)

Ancient Domains of Mystery… what a name. Truth be told, of all games I have played on my PC in the last 15 years, ADOM has surely been the one I keep returning to most often. And if there’s anything that hasn’t changed since the first time is that, whenever I do start up a new character, I can hardly keep myself off the game until the character dies… or until I win. Today the game is officially released on Steam, and the least I can do to repay ADOM and its team for hundreds upon hundreds of hours of fun is to review it.

Real player with 1030.1 hrs in game

There’s a lot I could say about ADOM but I’ll try to keep this brief:

Positives

  • The fact that the base ASCII game is, and always will be, free (it’s included in the Steam version, but you can download it stand-alone from the official website)

  • The new graphics update makes it much easier to see what’s going on and control your movements compared to the base game (i.e. if a monster is hostile to you, health bars, dots above sprites denoting status effects, the ability to click on things is especially helpful in your inventory,

Crypt of the NecroDancer

Crypt of the NecroDancer

Over the past several months, I’ve had the pleasure of testing an alpha of Crypt of the NecroDancer , a retro styled rhythm based roguelike.

A what?

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a procedural dungeon crawler where the player and enemies movie on the beats of the game’s music tracks. That may sound like an eclectic mix, but it works. It works really well.

You play as Cadence, a firey young woman who, against the better judgement of her elders, descends into the NecoDancer’s crypt in search of answers. The intro cinematic shows Cadence prone, her head against a blood smeared rock whilst her narration says, “I don’t know how I survived that fall.”

Real player with 415.3 hrs in game

Crypt of the Necrodancer is a timeless masterpiece of an Indie game that never seems to bore me. I have bought this game on 3 separate platforms, and I don’t believe that I wasted a single bit of time spent in it.

Crypt is a very interesting and fun fusion of both rhythm and puzzle, while presenting itself as a dungeon-crawler. The controls are simple, but the skill ceiling is so insanely high for something so surface-level in appearance. Missing a button press on a note resets a stacking “Coin Multiplier” which rewards you for treating this game with precision, taking damage also does this. There is no such thing as “Mandatory Damage” in this game, you are perfectly able to control yourself in order to avoid haphazard conditions, and every single enemy has a pattern or “Tell” that indicates their movements, attack patterns, and the sort.
