Pug With Bomb

Pug With Bomb

This game is tagged as a procedurally-generated.

This is not true.

Each map is custom-made and not generated.

I don’t think it had even 10 levels total.

It’s also tagged as cute and family friendly.

Unless you find dog poop cute and family friendly.

After playing the very few maps, the game ends abruptly on a black and white screen filled even more poop, which you cannot exit from.

You will be repeatedly killed before the enemy even touches you.

Enemies move fast and unpredictably, so there’s no way to even plan a strategy.

It’s alright for the price it’s easy to 100% and get all the achievements on the first stage I will say the zombies spooped me a few times while misjudging how far they were/lighting my lantern. The game is incredibly repetitive though and my crippled mans decided to bring a lantern to what should have been a flash light fight. I’m not even sure how he’s holding the lantern with both hands and wheeling the wheel chair at break neck speeds breaking zombie legs like Allen Iverson wheel chair edition. I would have liked the game a whole lot more if the final level gave my dude a weapon of some sort i.e. mobilized rocket wheel chair and I got to fight a boss, but I digress it’s aiight.

Sudden Darkness is another GameMaker Studio asset flip from serial copy+paste infringers, GreatHopeStudio. All these guys do is rip off game templates and projects from the Yoyogames/GameMaker Studio store, change the name and a few cosmetic details, and try to scam people into paying for someone else’s work on Steam. They have run asset flip scams dozens of times, and this is no exception. It’s nothing but a cash grab.

This time they’ve ripped off a basic template for a 2D retro pixel top down stealth/action game where you must avoid monsters and keep a lantern lit so you can see. Asset flips and other “Fake games” (as Valve calls them) are harmful to the industry, because they pollute the marketplace and reduce the visibility and exposure needed by genuine indie developers.

MetaMorph: Dungeon Creatures

MetaMorph: Dungeon Creatures

Truth in reviewing: I was a late addition to the beta team and got a copy for free.

I’ve enjoyed my time with MetaMorph. It’s a good, solid dungeon crawler with some fine carnage and tight, well-paced levels. It doesn’t do anything particularly revolutionary with the Gauntlet template, but it has a samurai bunny rabbit and flying buzzsaws. It’s the little things.

The gimmick of the game is simple enough: you play a fantasy critter that can (eventually) morph between three forms. You’ve got your sword-wielding rabbit (fast and deadly), your ogre (big and smashy), and a fire nymph that can toast enemies at range. Your job is to obliterate all the monsters in each level and scoot to the exit. Each form has its own stengths and special attacks, so the trick is to use the right Morph at the right time for maximum effectiveness, and also to not die so much. Enemies tend to bunch up and march as a horde, which CAN lead to some need for kiting (that’s bad!), but can also lead to situations where you obliterate a zillion guys at once with good timing. (That’s good!)

One of the most fun ARPGs I’ve played. Each level is less than 4 minutes long and works like a puzzle. There are no useless loot drops every couple of minutes like some other ARPGs and the progression is simple but very satsifying. unlocking new spirit forms and unlocking abilites for them is always exciting.

Each of the forms work VERY differently from the others and you will HAVE to shuffle between them dr=uring gameplay because of their abilites. Add to that the excellent level design and you have yourself a VERY enjoyable and simplified arpg where the only thing that matters is gameplay.

The Caretaker - Dungeon Nightshift

The Caretaker - Dungeon Nightshift

Sprinting around sprucing up a traditional RPG dungeon is the objective that The Caretaker - Dungeon Nightshift offers you, much in the spirit of other post-carnage housekeeping simulators such as Viscera Cleanup Detail. You’ve got garbage to throw in the incinerator (the game’s insensitive term for the remains of murdered adventurers), treasure chests to restock and spike traps to reset, all before the sun comes up and another day of bowel-rupturing terror commences.

However, the stringent time limit is the least of your worries here as you work against both a noise meter, easily raised by a combination of constant sprinting and the howling of the resident monsters that you must keep quiet with regular feedings, and the giant spiders that crawl along the dungeon ceiling who will insta-kill you should you make the mistake of jogging under them.

Attack of the Labyrinth +

Attack of the Labyrinth +

Overall, I’ve enjoyed this game. I don’t exactly remember when/how I got it, but I wanted to play a dungeon crawler, popped this one in, and was surprised by it.

From what I’ve collected, this game seems to have had a rocky history/start, but I can’t really find anything major to gripe about it. I’d imagine major issues have since been patched by the time I played this game.

Attack of the Labyrinth is pretty basic and it can be beaten in about 80 minutes if you’re experienced with the genre, slightly longer if not. It’s hard to get a game over in this game because if you’re decent at it and like to explore you’ll either find a ton of 1UP’s or be able to buy lots of them from the store. There are two endings that I’m aware of and the requirements to get the “good” ending aren’t that hard.

Times like this I wish there was a “neutral” option other than yes/no.

As a fan of twin stick shooters, and old-school arcade games, this was right up my alley. After spending far too much time trying to reach the ending, the time has come to give up and write my 2 cents:

Like Gauntlet? This is similar in some ways, though it does make for a better single-player experience. You start out weak, and there are 2 levels of power up to help you along, along with scrolls that offer 1-use boost (destroy everything on-screen, make you invincible for a short period, etc). Things start out promising for the first few levels, but around level 6 or so it becomes quite unbalanced and very grindy. By the end, although I wanted to finish it, I had to eventually give up having reached the end-boss once only. Maybe I’m playing it wrong.

Lovely game with very solid central concepts and a nice balance of strategy and luck! Music is upbeat and avoids being repetitive. Game dev is very responsive and involved in updating the game for quality of life suggestions, and I’m very interested to see how it develops from here!

I absolutely recommend giving this game a try!
