Race The Sun

Race The Sun

You have probably heard the expression “Less is more”. And it pretty much applies here because this game is quite simple with minimalistic design. But just because it is that way doesn’t mean that you will be able to complete it in few hours or feel that there’s something missing. Let me tell you more about it.

Let’s start with the story. There is not other way to put it but to say that there isn’t one. Yep, it is simple as that. Basically you are piloting a spacecraft fueled by solar energy and the sun is your death timer. And for this game it couldn’t have been better. On the bright side you don’t need to worry about the story being to complex, bad or uninteresting. This game is more about highest scores and tense gameplay.

Do I recommend this game? YES!

Here’s why:

The game starts off slow… and you progressively learn to dodge random obsticles along the way. However the further into the game you get, the more hectic it becomes, the more intense the dodging becomes and the more… freedom. You feel genuine freedom when playing this game when you reach good speed and is able to turn on a dime.

Each day you get a new set of semi-randomly generated levels to play through and the leaderboards exists only map-per-map so they reset the global leaderboards every few days. Whether you have played this game for a few hours or hundreds of hours, you can not only feel the achivement of getting better … but you can also see a tangiable achivement of getting better as you end up on the leaderboards.

Eh. The game isn’t much fun in it’s current state. I doubt the state will ever change though, given that It’s not marked as early access, and since devs are Russian (I know just how we work, in general, i barely have any hopes).

So, the goods.

  • Vehicles, they’re legendary indeed, and LUAZ i’ve never driven before in any other game, they’re all glorious.

  • Looting is most satisfying! You drive to some pilles of barrels or boxes or stops close by a cargo container and you just syphon stuff out. Yay!

I have to say, this is one of the worst games I have ever played in terms of controls and in-game physics. I have had to restart this game multiple times after getting my vehicle stuck at the very beginning either from clipping into the environment or just not traction or power to get out of a small rut. The slightest incline, you’re vehicle isn’t getting up without mashing the Q button repeatedly. It’s so frustrating that I just turn off the game.

There’s no in-game map which is fine, but the devs need to at least fix the programming for in-game pathing during missions so you don’t just randomly end up at the bottom of the large mountain or hill with no way of figuring out how to get up it.

My Summer Car

My Summer Car

This game is among one of my all-time favorites; over 1,000 hours played and counting, I just love it!

This game is so packed with realism, like paying bills, electrical safety, and car inspections, that the realism is the real draw here. It’s the realism that motivates you to keep playing, it’s the realism that makes the game a large puzzle to navigate, it’s the realism that gives you a relatable connection.

The amount of work, stress, and wide variety of fluids* you’ll put into the car will add to your fondness for the car. Yes, this low-powered, aging, and dripping one-of-a-kind Satsuma will become a genuine beauty in your eyes, I guarantee it.

Fixed up the Satsuma, passed inspection, slapped plates on it, got pulled over, and gave a breathalyzer test. To just then have the checkpoint, my Satsuma, and me plowed through by the green car with booming subwoofer; killing all of us. 10/10 would play again!

Yo, I don’t know why I like this game. I really do. If more things meld towards my interests, i.e. online multiplayer with VAC support, trading cards, some sort of digital storage space for multiple vehicles…

There’s a heavy emphasis on going high speed & listening to loud music, which I think misses the point of modern capabilities in its search to be a retroactively retro hit. Y’know? I sort of, for lack of a better term, picked up speed, right uh, away. But I still can’t drift, and that’s like, the basis of the game?

Unlike the traditional “Infinito Dream Mode”, if you run slowly you will catch up with the face and it will be a game over.

In other words, it is something like a time limit, and it has a strong content of the race game colors.)

A fantastic arcade shooter!

Pros

-Great gameplay

-Creative enemy/faction variety

-Awesome bosses

-Enjoyable progression

Cons

-Starting a boss fight with half or lower health could be an absolute drag.

-Difficult bosses/sections can have you repeating the same levels far too many times to be enjoyable.

Thoughts

-I feel like the bosses would have been much more enjoyable if you always entered the fight with full health. Perhaps after successfully reaching the boss and dying the amount of levels you have to repeat should only be one instead of two.

This game is Fantastic!

I played the demo before and loved it, so I knew the full game was going to be a treat. I know roguelite is becoming quite a common genre now, but it works perfectly with this game. It is so much fun having to play and earn the upgrades which then in turn make the game that little bit easier each time you play. That for me is the perfect way to get you playing and keep you engaged.

This game is a perfect mix of a classic shoot em up while driving a car and dodging bullets, so a car/shoot em up/bullet hell dodging. There are some great bosses to take down as well which are a lot of fun, working out their patterns and ways to take them down. For me its a perfect mix and it works beautifully!

Update Mar 2021 - The sole developer of the game, according to

his statement, has been (quite unexpectedly, judging by the tone

of his message) drafted into the Russian Armed Forces. My guess

as a former Soviet would be him suddenly dropping out of college

as a most likely reason. But I am not here to speculate.

Here is his message.

–——————————

An important announcement that you should know about. I, the developer of this game, was taken into the army until November 2021. Based on this, you have already realized that at this time I will not be able to continue development, and of course I will continue development with tripled strength when I return.

Might as well just be called “Hold Right Arrow to Win”. This was a complete chore to play. The courses are practically the same, just varying how high and low the hills and valleys are. Z/X is used to rotate your vehicle (and perform tricks, of which there are only 2) but it seemed random at best whether they actually helped me to win or not. The music stops playing when you’ve played a track to long without completing it and sometimes you will lose randomly (only seen 3x in the last 5 levels of the race portion). A complete ripoff at the full price of $10 and pretty much still a ripoff on a deep sale.

It does what it says it does.

It is cheap and worth the current price for a brief fling with hellish boats.

The game is VERY simple. Drive your boat around obstacles, Oregon Trail styles.

It’s fine.

Darkwind: War on Wheels

Darkwind: War on Wheels

So much time wasted on this game.

I regret most of it.

I remember installing this game for the first time years ago. I didn’t know about Mad Max, nor did I even try to get informations on Car Wars. I have now played a couple of single-player campaigns of Car Wars, mostly for getting the hang of the game. I’m an Interceptor/Road Warrior/Fury Road fangirl, so I thought this game would be cool.

The only way I can describe this is: it will get worse the more you play it, in every literal way possible. I take breaks, but I end up returning here, mostly because there is no other Wasteland RPG about car combat worth of playing (they’re mostly all about stupid trashy races and senseless pewpew, nothing near Interstate 82, and we all know that game is old and hard to get working on today’s systems) and so I come back here from time to time.

Real player with 734.5 hrs in game

All in all, Darkwind can be very fun to play but without any future content or bug fixes, I can’t recommend the time investment or to invest any money into the game. Don’t expect to just hop into the game and understand the lobby or interface without asking questions in lobby chat or researching. Most of the veteran players are very friendly and helpful so don’t be afraid to chat them up if you do decide to give it a shot.

If you just want to play for free, you have nothing to lose. Only real limitation on free to play is you are stuck in Somerset, the beginning town. My guess is you will find this game entertaining for about a month or two of daily gaming if it is your cup of tea. If it isn’t, you won’t make it much farther than the tutorial before you uninstall.
