All Ashes and Illusions

All Ashes and Illusions

“Women are snakes and liars, all of them: the more beautiful, the more conniving. Don’t let your guard down, or they will ruin you.”

Yuel was only six years old when he witnessed his mother being put to death, for the heinous crime of daring to have an affair. For other women, such a folly mightn’t have been so lethal, but for Yuel’s ill-fated mother – the wife and queen of Indra’s tyrannical king, Khalil – it spelt her doom.

As he witnesses his mother’s corpse decomposing beneath the intense sunlight, Yuel’s father offers him some sage words of wisdom: namely, not to trust women. They are, in Khalil’s words, wicked and deceitful, and becoming too attached can end in nothing save disaster.

Outwardly, Yuel must swallow his sorrow, for fear of earning his father’s ire. Kings are not, after all, supposed to cry; even future kings such as him. In private, however, Yuel turns to his nursemaid, the kindly Safiya, for succour. Safiya is Yuel’s only ally in the palace: his father cold and distant; the servants deferential, brow-beaten, and kept silent through fear. Without Safiya, Yuel would be all alone…

Yet she, too, abandons him, when Yuel grows old enough to no longer need a nursemaid to tend to him.

Bereft and embittered, Yuel has nothing to look forward to, until – after a prolonged illness – his father eventually dies, and Yuel inherits the throne and the crown in his stead.

No longer a young boy – Safiya’s ‘little prince’ – but a grown man, Yuel plots to win Safiya over once more. Unable to forget about her, and unable to trust any other woman, Yuel cannot conceive of a life without her. She did promise to stay with him, after all - and, single-minded to a fault, Yuel is determined to see this promise fulfilled at any cost.

7/10. A push for gameplay in a medium largely bereft of it and a story with interesting lore and surprising twists are thwarted by a poor translation and uncertainty on where perception ends and reality begins.

First: There’s some post-story content that is currently untranslated. I made a machine translation for it, which you can find if you check the Steam guides for the game. I strongly recommend not looking at it until after you’ve completed the full story (it won’t make a lick of sense otherwise), but it should be mentioned.

7 Lives

A game with a very complex story.

I really liked the plot it aproaches , leaves you with a lot of think about.

Also it’s multiple endings , which will change the experience.

And understanding that every choice has a consequence , a tragic one more often than not in this game , the concept of time and alternate realities is very interesting and 7 Lives aproaches it wonderfully , putting you in the skin of a character carrying a lot of tragedy in his shoulders and with the huge task of stopping the time flux before it ends him.

I have a hard time recommending this VN, although the price is not high it just does not seem worth it in the end. I played through both timelines and I had such a hard time following what exactly was going on due to the poor grammar.

I did enjoy the art in the game as well as the music though by the second playthrough I was kind of tired of it. I think if this game were given a proper translation it might be ok, but as it is I can’t recommend it.

Frequent Flyer: A Long Distance Love Story

Frequent Flyer: A Long Distance Love Story

I’m a bit surprised by the negativity in the other reviews, especially when it goes to writing - I think this game presents a very fine and believable story, even if it has some issues endemic to NWG titles (like unnecessary, mundane descriptions and scenes that clog much of the first 20-30 minutes of the VN). It’s also particularly simple when it goes to the visual side of things and the voice acting feels a tiny bit off (especially for James, mostly because of the recording quality), but never to the point of being actually off-putting and considering what kind of plot it tries to communicate, I didn’t mind it being a bit clunky.

Frequent Flier: A Long Distance Love Story is a short (about 2-3 hours) yuri visual novel. It’s a story about kinda complicated relationship. It’s never too easy but what was going on in this game made me rather curious. I have a number of yuri games in my steam library but…not my cup of tea at all. As this game is quite short I thought I could give it a try. And soon enough I realized I don’t mind. Love is love no matter the gender, the story was interesting to keep me going.

At the beginning we see that the game is based on a true story and it was very intriguing. There’s sexual content here but luckily for me no explicit art or detailed text description, so even I was ok with only general stuff. At first it was nice to read about MC, her feelings to that pretty girl, then things escalated quite unexpectedly… I was surprised, worried, annoyed but still intrigued. You know I finished the game minutes ago but I’m kinda frustrated. What was really going on? I expected the true ending route to show the other girl perspective or reveal the truth about everything but what was that? Is it open-ended? Should I think for myself? Is it obvious enough and it’s me who is not getting anything?

! Why was she even lying all the time? Aahhhh frustrated!

Trinoline All Ages Version

Trinoline All Ages Version

BOTTOM LINE: I felt betrayed, but I still recommend it for SHIRONE and what Sara could have been.

(Meta)spoilers ahead.

SHIRONE is a brilliant, passionate pianist android imouto with a tragic fate, thus the ultimate heroine. Or so I thought, when Sara, the scientific genius who created her, totally stole the show: she was logic and reason embodied, embedded with brutal honesty and a desperate need of love. Her arc was a fierce advance into her every spot, until reaching her innermost and becoming one by the means of a final transhuman leap… Or so I thought, before the last sprint when both Sara and SARA gave it all up to an improvised Sein-zum-Tode speech. Yuuri is barely worth mentioning; YUURI’s lesson was spot on but immediately disregarded as a mistake.

I like this, I really do. I really want to recommend this highly, but I can’t.

A lot of it is excellent; the stories, the morals, the thought provoking situations where I genuinely was struggling to decide what I would do in such a situation. However, some things I can’t really forgive that easily really do let it down.

  • Ambiguity. Two of the three routes leave off with several loose ends and unanswered questions.

  • Massive amounts of build up towards particular plot points that then end blandly and minimal fanfare.

There really is no strategy involved. You just keep replaying until the RNG lets you win when where are no good card combinations and the enemy can just keep spamming 50 damage a turn.

So I found this on Itchio a while back and when I saw it was on Steam, I gave it a whirl.

Only took two hours, RNG being RNG.

So, pros:

VA, I swear I heard her from another character. Liked the VA, the voice fit the face.

The, “art”. Was to the point, did what it made to do.

The patch being being on Steam was very convenient, not having to go through this or that site was nice.

Mission 4 and 6 bad end, scratched an itch.

So, cons.

Well, not a con really. RNG is the real boss here, but thankfully you can stack the odds in your favor.

Sweet Volley High

Sweet Volley High

Well, Google corrected me redirecting to a TV series called “Sweet Valley High”, so this game probably takes its name from that thing.. you know, never watched it, never even heard about it although we had it in Italy in the same years it was aired in the States..

Actually I watched only a single TV series in my entire 30+ life.. which was Stargate SG1 by the way.

Apart from the word play, this visual novel of course focuses on other themes - the main character, Aya, is in fact a volleyball player and we’re gonna follow her through her high school days and her sports dream.

=SPOILERS=

I underestimated the story telling of this game, I thought I seen everything with Yuri Romance Visual Novels.

But this game slapped me in the face and told me I was dead wrong. And it was right!

This game has 5 endings,

Yuka ( BAD Ending, She’s a B I T C H! )

Eri ( BAD Ending but understandable )

Yuichi ( SEEMINGLY a Good Ending at first But this is by far the WORST bad ending in game. You’ll understand why after seeing Yuichi’s trueself in Eri’s Route )

Nanami ( BAD ending, This is on you! )
