Edit: No word on the Oculus exclusive content, but English subtitles have been added! Hope to see the Oculus stuff brought to this version soon!

Newly released Oculus version contains more content and English subtitles. Steam version has not received an update since June of last year. The Oculus version is not available in my region, (UK). Until either the Steam version is updated, or the Quest version is released in UK, I will leave a negative review to express my dissatisfaction.

Little Brother Jim

Little Brother Jim

Little Brother Jim is an interesting game that is a bit of a departure from Mr. Bodur’s previous titles. The story begins with a taxi/parking simulator that is colorful, fun, and challenging at times. I had little previous experience with driving games so I crashed into cones, left and right, as I built my skills up. By the end, I was speeding through turns and jumping over obstacles!

In between the parking levels, there is a beautiful story about family, love, and the brevity of life. The scenery is gorgeous and I enjoyed reading the letters left by Jim.

Overall good game depending on price paid - it’s worth noting that I received this for free via a competition and though I would pay for this game I wouldn’t pay more than £3. This is due to the fact that it is a very short game and there is a statement in the credits which undermines the whole perception of the story

! as you are lead to believe it is a true story but it is in fact fiction which really ruined it for me

At first, I felt like I was reading someones diary or invading someones personal life in some way. However, after playing for a short while I found the story intriguing and continued to complete the game. The driving game is easy and basic but surprisingly fun if your looking for a chilled play. The walking sim is beautiful and accompanied by a peaceful, pretty soundtrack.

The Dead Tree of Ranchiuna

The Dead Tree of Ranchiuna

Overall: 8/10 (With caveats)

This is a visually fantastic game, packaged with an excellent, atmospheric soundtrack. But, let down by very mediocre game-play, puzzles and poor voice acting and script writing. It attempts to explore the topics of guilt, revenge, jealousy and greed but approaches them with the subtlety of a 12 year old.

The first hour or so was a really great experience, very calming and simple. But, when the game started to introduce a plot and very, very limited ‘puzzle’ use, that tranquillity fell apart quite quickly. The feeling of peaceful relaxation and leisurely enjoyment was replaced with frustration, as the puzzles are little more than clicking objects until you have either clicked them in the correct order, or enough times. Otherwise, it is simply as it says, a walking simulator.

I consider “The Dead Tree of Ranchiuna” to be a really decent game for my taste, which is to say, I am a fan of story-driven slow moving games of poetry and mystery.

Imagery, sound and music are fine. Voiceovers are good in general, though the narrator’s performance lacks a bit in nuance - but this might be due to the script, that suffers from the same problem.

The scenery is beautiful and rich in detail, a variety of animals announce their presence, water gurgles, wind rushes, rocks fall.

The music emphasises the poetry and solitary harshness of the landscape.

Bottle: Pilgrim Redux

Bottle: Pilgrim Redux

Updated for Redux: 6.5/10 (Original was 4.5/10)

TLDR: The visuals are beautiful, the story is interesting. The pacing is still funky, and the audio needs one more good polish. Still only worth it if you’re willing to wave off a lot of wonkiness, or, like me, you’re hoping for that one last update to pull it all together into the great game it could be.

The good and improved: The scenery and level design has improved on the beauty that was already there. The collectables are relevant and add to the story. The new voice actor is able to carry the ending better than the original (I miss the “posh Australian” accent, but I understand the creators' decision to use an American accent) I actually enjoyed the snow chapter this time. That’s the same level that almost caused me to rage-quit the original, so good improvement there.

Bottle: Pilgrim is the latest creation from solo developer Tonguc Bodur. Anyone familiar with his previous work knows that they wear the “walking simulator” tag proudly. They are generally brief, averaging a few hours to complete, usually narrated, and with a background soundtrack. I think most gamers are clearly divided on walking sims, either you enjoy them or you don’t. I find them to be a welcome diversion from the mainstream releases, an occasional oasis of contemplation, reflection and tranquility amidst all the shooting and blowing things up.

WHY DO I HAVE TO DO MATH IN THIS GAME!?

! There should be a prize for getting the question right, though. New dialogue, y’know? That would’ve been funny.

Oh my, this was such a good experience. I loved the SFX and soundtracks played throughout the game. I personally really enjoyed the change of pace with the perspective swaps alongside the story, specially how dynamic it was, making everything more interesting to read.

Also, this story gives me a feeling of nostalgia that I don’t seem to find very often while reading. I don’t know why though, it might be just a me thing, but the plot felt really relatable. Not only this, but I loved how it kept going. Most stories just go to a certain point then just sums what happens after. This actually shows you, it’s SO interesting, I loved the interactions between the characters, felt so much real and wholesome, while sometimes intense. This was such a fresh experience, I wasn’t expecting a free visual novel to be this good.

This is a very interesting visual novel game, good story, good graphics, not much interaction, barely any to be honest. I will finish tomorrow, possibly. This is actually a pretty good length, pretty long visual novel game.
