Fidel Dungeon Rescue

Fidel Dungeon Rescue

Fidel Dungeon Rescue is to puzzle games what Spelunky is to platformers. (To clarify, this is a very high compliment, as Spelunky is probably my favourite video game of all time.)

Truthfully though, both games really do share some familiar elements and design decisions. In this game, you play a cute little dog having to rescue Grandma from a dungeon filled with all sorts of baddies. You navigate through multiple, tile-based floors, killing enemies as you go, and leaving your leash trailing behind you, blocking you from ever stepping on the same tile twice. Where the similarities to Spelunky begin are in familiar enemy motifs such as spiders, snakes or flesh-eating plants. Further similiarity arises in a time-based ghost, the randomized rogue-lite nature of the game and the strategic, yet fast-paced gameplay that Fidel’s mechanics enable.

I like Fidel Dungeon Rescue a lot. I revisit it once in a while to complete the daily challenge or beat the main game. It never goes on too long and is always fun.

One of it’s strengths is definitely it’s great replayability. Since puzzles are randomly generated, two dungeons are never the same, and it has a real impact on the gameplay. Due to the various rules of each different tiles and creatures, a slight position offset may drastically change the best path to an exit. There’s also many possible solutions to most puzzles, so some thought is always required even with “obvious” situations.

All That Glitters is Gold!

In this mining platformer, traverse your underground mine shafts to retrieve gold! Team up or compete against your friends or go solo into the mines and extract as much gold as you can. Setup your operation and reinvest your earnings into better gear and equipment. This line of work not only separates the gold from the dirt, but the pups from the dogs. With danger lurking in the ancient grounds, hungry Dinos awaken, searching for prey and loot. The wise miner doesn’t fear the Dino but sees it’s flesh and bones as a potential fuel source for their operations. Gold mining is a treasure hunt, so open your miner’s map, test some dirt, and find that stash of gold!

Mine to Save the Town from Fat Cat

Each unique map has new environmental hazards like forest fires, earthquakes, lava and new machines like helicopters and excavators! Every speck of gold you collect gets you closer to prevent Fat Cat from building his Cat-sino next door and paving over the town!

Beware of Dinos

  • Dinos cause cave-ins when they get grumpy and stomp their feet

  • Dinos eat all of the gold out of your bags of dirt.

  • Dinos steal gold coins when they bite you!

I love this game. The art and music come together to make a really fun and enjoyable aesthetic. Unlike most other clicker games I’ve played this one actually has some difficulty in it, so that’s another plus. Since its release, TV Kid has been getting multiple updates, adding convenient and noticeable features. The creator has said they would continue to work on and update the game at a slower and steady pace, which is most likely going to make any new additions even higher quality. This is a great thing because that will hopefully mean this game will have an increasing replay value over time.

Fantastic game. I was stunned by how realistic the game is. The Attenborough-like narrator and the documentary setting make the game quite educative.

Bullsharks [Carcharhinus leucas] give live birth, which makes the enforced caesarean section at the beginning of the game totally believable. They are found in sweet and salt water alike, which totally explains how the shark can intrude that many lakes and rivers. They are also big on energy conservation. For example, they react to external factors and can decrease energy required for osmoregulation. That totally explains how the shark can eat an entire bbq society while crawling and jumping for several kilometres over a golf lawn. Arguably, bio-electricity and grenade-resistance are rather atypical mutations of bull sharks, but hey, who can really claim to understand nature? Similarly, the shark possesses an active sonar which seems unlikely given that it’s only to be found in marine mammals, but it’s totally possible that her father was a humpback whale (also given the incredible size that this specimen reaches).

Space Hack

Space Hack

Overall, after spending 45 hours grinding through this game and going through all 15 BioSpheres and all 45 levels, I can say for sure that Space Hack isn’t worth the experience in present times or at least has aged horribly.

TL;DR: This game is extremely tedious and repetitive and although I had fun in a few places I can’t really recommend this to anyone unless they are looking to complete a random game and they are willing to spend hours and hours battling with the same stuff. Even for a 2005 game it suffers from horrible pacing which shows the lack of interesting mechanics to play with.

I’ve been playing ARPGs for a long time. This sucks as an ARPG.

These are my problems with it:

  • No chest system. Biggest problem in my case. I like to save items I might or not use in the future in some place. This game didn’t have that. I ended up using my base to save good gear, by the end I had over 50 items laying around.

  • A lot back-tracking. Get this: the inventory is 10x5. A bit tiny except some items can be 2x4 in size, and as mentioned before, no chest system. So let’s say you find 5 items with size 2x4, and then a 2x2 item. You’re done, you can’t pick up the 2x2 one. You have to go back to your base (for which you have a thing called “hi-techs”, which are basically spells; most are good and useful, some don’t use your energy), deal with items however you want to deal them (again, no chest system), go back to the quest, rinse and repeat. I think at the fourth or fifth time it happens in the same map, you’re allowed to swear at the devs.

Dig Dog

Dig Dog

One of my absolute contenders to the game of the year in this 2018, and one of the most perfect arcade experiences that I have found in Steam since ‘Switch ‘N’ Shoot’.

Basically, ‘Dig Dog’ is ‘Spelunky’ at the speed of cocaine. It uses a procedural algorithm for the construction of a descendant layout that is as fine tuned and well balanced as in Derek Yu’s influential classic.

But in its main mechanic it looks to the sheer arcade intensity of drilling Japanese arcade games, feeling like a much more intense and less cerebral version of ‘Mr. Driller,’ that instead in the use of logic or puzzle elements, it relies in your ninja skills.

It is rare to find such simple mechanics, graphics and music done so well. This game is a love letter to games of yore that if released decades ago would be considered a classic. The controls are extremely responsive and tight making it so that each risky situation you get out of and each death you suffer feels completely responsible to your actions, and your actions alone.

The graphics while primarily black, white and two shades of a background color convey all the information you need to know about the game: White means its an entity of some sort, yellow means it harbors a coin, red means it harbors a heart. The only downside I have found when it comes to the mechanics being a bit of difficulty in figuring out exactly what the power-ups actually do, however with some quick experimentation it becomes clear.
