Generals. Positional Warfare

Generals. Positional Warfare

You are a general. The war has begun, and your country expects only victory from you. The action takes place in the headquarters. Here are schematic images of battlefields. You place figures of your soldiers on the field and give them orders for the day. Test the strategist within yourself. Waiting for you:

  • Simultaneous moves - You don’t know your opponent’s intentions until you make a move. You will need to consider all the possibilities of the enemy before you give the final orders for the day. Only at night will you get a complete picture of what happened during the day. And you have to adapt to the changes.

  • Multiple battlefields at the same time - you must control the situation on all front lines. Develop the attack in all directions, or concentrate your forces on one-it’s up to you.

  • Addictive gameplay - you control a huge army. You will have to correctly allocate the reserve. Choose a convenient direction to attack, or an excellent position for a blind defense.

  • Various types of units - soldiers, engineers, tanks, artillery and aircraft. Each has its own distinctive features. And they also interact with each other in different ways.

  • Unique countries - Bluelands, Kingdom of Greendagar, Kredsanokia, Zoldania and Perputsk Republic. Each has its own specialization, landscape, and history.

Guide your country to victory in a turn-based strategy game Generals. Position Warfare.

The game was developed by one person.

Radio Commander

Radio Commander

Overview

Set during the Vietnam War, Radio Commander is a realtime strategy game in which the player assumes the role of a company commander known by the radio handle of Papa Bear who has to accomplish military objectives by ordering two platoons via radio. Alpha Platoon is lead by a proud Texan named Kovacs and Bravo Platoon is lead by a black officer named Coleman with some prior combat experience. Unlike any other military strategy game, Radio Commander expects the player to keep track of platoons and enemy units by marking them on a map and radioing (frequently if desired) to the platoons to pinpoint their coordinates on the map in addition to locations of enemy units in which the platoons may be engaged in battle with.

After roughly 20 hours and earning all the achievements, I feel it’s time to put my look on this game into perspective.

The game is fun if you’re into pseudo-realistic military strategy games, in saying that it’s probably not for everyone, but it is fun.

Imagine a Vietnam era Tom Clancy’s Endwar, with a twist, you can’t see your units.

The three difficulty settings in the game are Story, Commander, and Veteran. The first 2 are fairly easy with the amount of micro and enemy difficulty, and the third kicks it up a notch, which is a very good thing for a game like this. It increases the difficulty to the point where you can’t just skip through radio communications all willy nilly. The combat your troops will get into is much more difficult for them to win on this difficulty mode, and you’re more likely to suffer casualties. Your troops can get lost if you keep them in a sticky situation too long before they pull out of combat. You have to keep your choppers and vehicles fueled up, or risk them crashing and losing the valuable crew they have, and the valuable asset they provide.

Frontline: Panzer Blitzkrieg!

Simple little simulation. NOT going to test an Avalon Hill fan. Wait for it to be on sale, as it has no scenario designer so you only get what it comes with. Limited replayability. A few minor glitches where the game wont let you attack or even move into a grid that you should be able to. So sometimes, you cant eliminate an enemy unit.

just got the 4 game bundle was looking for a break from high stress turn base games the bigger devs make .

wow was this a surprise a lot is packed into the game some is not , so will not be for everyone .

but looking for a good shot out game with minimal supply planning this can be it .

One thing I like is no max turns just objectives But you have to keep going since you will run out of supply but collecting objectives or Parachute drops gets you more . I played on normal and a few battles had to restart .

WARSAW

WARSAW

Some words to describe this game in the first place: dark, difficult, sad, beautiful and mind-blowing.

-As a history fan myself, I love this game; it contains beautiful artworks and a sad background, characters and encounters' artworks are worth collecting. You can see those faded historical moment vividly, while not as grand as those moments of Normandy, Pacific or Stalingrad, it gives people that feeling.

-As for the gameplay, not only the combat is difficult, player also has to manage the resources and ammunition they’ve got (yes, there’s an independent “supply” consumable item for purchasing stuff); unlike other games, this one is based on a true history event, with the ending of the story set, a heavy-hearted player must try to help those men and women to survive longer before they meet their ultimate destiny of doom. For me, it is like a mixture of darkest dungeon, this war of mine and valiant heart.

(Hopefully) FINAL UPDATE:

One month ago I said that I would keep my WARSAW review negative until more changes for the better were made to the game. I saw changes being made, MANY changes, so here I am again. So, with that being said, let’s (again) get to the bulk of it now (this time trying to not let emotions get too in the way of things like in my original review).

WARSAW had a VERY rocky launch but now it has been polished and updated so much that it can barely be compared to the way that it launched in. Game became better in basically every department, along with getting more content too.

Strategic Mind: Blitzkrieg

Strategic Mind: Blitzkrieg

Before I start I should say I really like this series of games. I played Strategic Mind: Pacific for over 500 hours and finished both the US and Japanese campaigns on “Reasonable” level and I have over 600 hours playing Strategic Mind: Blitzkrieg (haven’t finished it yet, stuck at Moscow) and I am pretty certain I will be buying Specter of Communism.

I definitely recommend this game for hard core tactical / strategy players.

That said there are several things I find frustrating and or illogical, some things I would like to see and some hints for players. Which is where I start.

In short - This game is for you, if:

  • You’re open minded to or simply enjoy alternate history scenarios.

  • You’re looking for a micro management strategy game within the WW2 era.

  • You’re into hexagon strategy. Everything in here is about it.

  • You’re not expecting a Company of Heroes 2 like experience graphical/gameplay-wise. ;)

  • You’re not a slave to german/western schools' history-propaganda lesson*

(- You’re having the non-german version or are not disturbed by censored cutscenes (ongoing Status-quo Q4 2021, still WIP)

Command: Modern Operations

Command: Modern Operations

This is basically an heavily updated and improved version of Command Modern Air / Naval Operation (CMANO)- but don’t think that’s a bad thing, in fact it’s a very good thing.

That sentence above might make someone who is unfamiliar with the game think: But why should I then buy CMO (Command Modern Operations) instead of CMANO when the latter is cheaper?

The simple answer to that is that almost all important aspects of the game has been improved, a lot of irritating limitations due to the state of computer hardware when CMANO was released in 2013 has been removed and a lot of new features which not only increases realism, but also makes the game more accessible for newcomers to the operationel level military ops simulation world has been introduced.

If you read some of the reviews here (or watched LPs), you will have a good idea what this game is about.

I want to adress here just some points critizesed quite often in reviews: the missing campaign and/or the lack of scenarios, leading to the impression one would be forced to buy DLCs to actually do something with this game.

If you buy C:MO you get of course quite some turorials to learn the basics. Given the mass of the simulated systems and the different time frames of these systems it is impossible to teach you every detail in these turorials. When you start a scenario and are not familiar with the weapons used in it, you will have to learn what they do and don´t do. The database gives you everything you need, but you have to read it. If you start a scenario and are not familiar with the weapons, aircraft, ships and so on you might spent some time just to get an understanding of you forces before doing you first moves. This game requires patience.

Control Craft 2

Control Craft 2

This is a enjoyable, addictive and challenging game which you can play for hours. I lik’d 95% of the game due some facts that’s a great potential about very well concept of fast thinking style game. The art, music, voice acting and graphics, gameplay are great and plus 10/10 though. On the other hand in some cases the gameplay feels unbalanced in some missions that makes harder(last levels only) even with the upgrades. Only thing i may suggest if apply is a reset upgrades/stats button if it’s possible.

Very fun RTS game, similar to Mushroom Wars, Galcon etc.

Essentially each map is built as a number of resource generators. Whoever controls the generator gets the units it creates. You send those units out to capture other generators. The AI is decent - there’s a challenge here and you’ll have to use the powerups wisely on some levels to give yourself an edge (especially early on to deny the computer rapid resource capture as you tend to start levels with less resource than the computer)

Dev has recently updated the game to fix the achievement bugs.

At one point during play a gamebreaking bug happens in the design screen. It states that I need to add the engine gun and suspension and yet have all three, still the game won’t let new designs get built for this arbitrary stupidity, dear dev, I have no idea where exactly the code is wrong for this but please fix because it’s easily the best 5ish bucks I’ve spent

A small 5 dollar (or regional equivilant) game that has the player conquer every city on the map using researched and developed tanks and varying levels of trained infantry.

Building up your armies with the right equipment and soldier/tank ratio is important; large numbers of tanks are good for deserts, planes, and quick movement across the map, but will be slaughtered in cities. Large numbers of infantry and a tank battalion or two is great for assaulting and holding cities, but are slower to move on the map. Reasonably equal ratios of tank and infantry battalions are well-rounded, able to take on just about every environment, but won’t be as good as more specialised army groups.

Beyond Enemy Lines

Beyond Enemy Lines

I’m a fan of Project I.G.I. and already liked this game very much when it just came out, because of the similarities in the core gameplay, and I missed this feeling a lot. BEL fullfilled my expectations and is still getting better with every update.

Going completely stealth is hard to master. In case of failing to stay undetected - which you should try as long as you can - you really need to aim precisely, otherwise you’re a dead man if you have no cover nearby. This should be a tough walkthrough challenge for Centerstrain01, who knows his videos ;)

Word Tactical is recently thrown around a lot and it usually refers to games like Operation Flashpoint, Armed Assault, Ghost Recon, Swat etc. Despite their history, many tactical shooters have being changed over the years and they are going further and further from their origins with each new entry.

Among the good old games there was a small first person shooter developed by Innerloop studios called Project IGI.

IGI series was not very popular and was killed after the release of a second game, IGI 2 Covert Strike. Despite that the series is unfairly underrated, both games are very enjoyable to play even today.

Unity of Command: Stalingrad Campaign

Unity of Command: Stalingrad Campaign

TL;DR: It’s awesome if you know what you’re getting and if you’re into this kind of game. To know what you get I guess you have to read the rest of this wall of text. I promise it will be a nice and informative read while covering most of what you’d want to know before you buy the game or one of the two DLC’s.

–——

Unity of Command is an excellent game that manages to achieve a thing rarely achieved by wargames that deal with WWII on the operational level: It’s accessible to newcomers and easy to learn, it’s simple on the surface and in its gameplay but it still has enough depth and complexity to offer interesting decisions for veteran wargamers, because almost every decision you make carries some weight when it comes to the end result. There are other wargames comparably excellent to this one, but they make most newcomers want to vomit blood out of their eyes - because the developers place their confidence in you being willing to read a 100 page manual alongside playing their game and they assume you will look past the hideous and needlessly overcomplicated user interface. (I’m looking at you Korsun Pocket - excellent game, terrible learning experience).

Before I say every positive things about this game, I have to say one thing:

The game’s tutorial and manuals are fucking LAZY. They never tell you enough about the mechanics, they never specify how each mechanics would affect the units. So many things are untold abou this game in tutorial and manual that it makes player to give up the game entirely before they get the hang of it. The Devs should’ve included more thoughtful introduction to this game for sure. While the ones who developed might see it as “obvious,” to people who are going into this game the shits that computer throws at the player is infuriating to say the least.
