Monsterland

Monsterland

Don’t be fooled by the graphics: This isn’t a Roguelike, it’s a top-view Doom! I had a copy of this way back in the early 00s and loved it, and was thrilled to see it’s on Steam. It’s heavy on the atmosphere, despite being just ASCII graphics. It uses sound effects, story cues, and fading colors in a surprisingly moody way, and is a lot of fun to boot. I’ve got Doom 2016 in the other room, but have been playing this instead. Now, the bad points: I do think it’s a little too easy to kick the bucket sometimes– it would be improved if there were less need for level memorization. I also wish the enemies didn’t score damage when they are simply adjacent to you. They should have to be adjacent for a short period of time (like the pink demons in Doom)– otherwise they’ll score hits instantly when you open the door, even though you can minimize it by getting ready to back up fast. But despite the few issues it’s a compelling play and well worth the 99 cents. I hope they make another or maybe re-release the original version for fans (since it’s impossible to find now!).

When I first saw that Monsterland, formerly Dead Colony in its lesser version (on Desura), was released a little over a month ago I was more than a little surprised. Don’t get me wrong I understand that there has been a revival of classic era-style gaming. Atari recently announced that they were bringing back 100 of their classic games in the spring with multiplayer support to Steam in the northern hemisphere Spring and Sanctuary RPG has been relatively successful on Steam as an ASCII adventure but a text shooter? How was that going to work? Surprisingly well and very playable as it turns out.

This game is incredibly interesting. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who doesn’t mind the whole command prompt thing.

I am having fun so far. You can use physical attacks, spells, or blessings (based on the god you choose). If you like turn-based combat and ASCII graphics, I recommend you try this game out.

Hacker Evolution

Hacker Evolution

Simply surprising, great music… I may not become an hacker but I can play as one without special stuff.

You’re a renowned IT specialist that retired as an ermit on an isolated island following your family’s death. However, you’re asked to investigate on 4 different problems, that seemed tied. What will you discover?

Hacker Evolution is perhaps a writing simulator, as you need to type the command but you need your brains to avoid to be traced and to have a game over. Sometimes, you’ll need to begin a new campaign because you can’t do anything but try a different manner to avoid spending too much money you’ve “stolen” or to add to your trace level. That’s perhaps the most frustrating thing in HE.

My playtime: 18.6h (based on steam, main story + all extra levels are completed).

Developer Response: ~1 month.

Intro

Hacker Evolution is a hacking simulation game which is played in terminal. You’ll use several commands to do the “hacking” and some of them are real terminal commands. This game might look similar to Uplink in the shell, although the execution is quite different.

Music

There are some soothing musics played in the background. You can also change the music selection by pressing F4.

Idle Adventure

Idle Adventure

Well, all good things come to an End eventually.

//TL;DR It’s a fun little time sink early on with a lot of potential, but it suffers from the devs decission making regarding balance, and game mechanics. Dev’s would rather turn it into a money sink than make it enjoyable.

I’ve been activly following this game for the last couple weeks since it was launched on Steam.

I’ve been there at the beginning when about 80% was still in chinese.

I’ve seen the Devs work hard to translated everything (even tho the outcome is still mostly chinglish).

Idle Adventure isn’t coming back, kids…

He doesn’t love us anymore. We don’t speak Chinese, and he never changes. I was surprised he overlooked our differences for so long. Shh, no more tears; only happiness. All good things must go, children.

In all seriousness, truly a sad sight to see a game like this up and die this way. English servers have finally been disregarded for so long that they no longer respond. The dev team that ‘helps’ consumers with this issue tried to get malware installation on our computers, the game hasn’t been updated since March (2018), and a quarter of the game was still in Chinese despite the language preference being English. Up until the negligence for the ENG:Servers, it was still an amazing time sink. Your party were just a bunch names and labels with no faces, so growing to endear your self-inserts is inevitable. It was just a bunch of numbers that you get a little too attached to.

CRYPTIC

Great game I’ve been enjoying and replaying ! After playing “Stories Untold” and “Open Sorcery”, I was looking for another game that would allow me to “type in” my way through the story ! It uses all your imagination to find your way, find the clues and avoid the “Game Over” traps. Original and excellent kind of game !

Very intriguing, solid, old-shool IF. This is only my first impression after 1h of gaming but my opinion is at moment very good. If you are a enthusiast of the text adventure genre like me this is a mandatory purchase. Thanks to Shoho Games to keep alive this type of games, I’ll buy all your next games!

Silmaris: Dice Kingdom

Silmaris: Dice Kingdom

Silmaris meets the bare minimum for me to recommend it; it took me about 12 hours to beat the game, then another 5 hours to exhaust all the various outcomes, or at least as many as I cared to see. After that, in my opinion, there is little to no replayability.

It was fun and an interesting story, with plenty of choice. I love the idea of dice rolls; its a good strategy and resource management game with (lite) elements of city/kingdom-building as well as the thrill of RNG. And yes, you will die plenty of times before figuring out how to best navigate the decision-making. For me, that adds to the joy of the eventual triumph. However, once you beat the game, you’ve probably seen all the events, and for me, the game is not enjoyable enough to replay after there’s no new surprises.

I played this game for a time and for me it was enjoyable. You play a ruler in a city surrounded by five other cities. Two of them are hostile towards you at the beginning. The rest is neutral. Trying to either subjugate or befriend them is your main goal then. For this goal you have a pick out of a varity of advisors at your disposal. Additional to this politic part you can solve missions on the map, which can provide you with artifacts making your advisors stronger.

Everything works via dices you use in the game. You gain them by either letting your advisors collect more or earn them in missions.

WAVER: A Typing Adventure

WAVER: A Typing Adventure

OMG I am already in love with this game!

Can type 100wpm. Cannot remember where keys are while playing. (Had fun anyway.)

Refreshing and unique, Waver definitely feels worth the purchase if you enjoy something both straightforward in concept and infuriatingly difficult to perfect. The rhythm of the “waves” will take some getting used to, however once you find it it makes sense (I found this difficult to admit, as my first instinct was to just be mad at the game). The learning curve is not the smoothest, but as you start to improve, receiving better scores/perfect waves is very satisfying. This game definitely feels more like it’s made for an experienced typist looking to test and refine skills/dexterity, as there are little to no practical educational aspects for younger learners (outside of typist mode, which is just your basic WPM typing test).

My Typing Skill

This game is very well made. The graphics are smooth and the music is great. It would be lovely if the Training Mode had a way to measure your WPM. The Asteroid Mode is perfect, and the increasing speed makes for a great challenge. The Alien Mode is fun, but way too short–multiple levels would have been nice, or perhaps each time you play, the map layout and enemies change. All in all, it’s fun and has the potential to be even moreso.

Excellent game to type with ten fingers and smash things at the same time.

For the first time in human history, you can use this skill for the good of mankind.

With the strange scenarios there is much motivation to become a typing expert.

One of the games I would recommend even my own children, if I had any =D

Thanks Mr. RewindApp :) You got interesting little games.

The prisoner of the Night

The prisoner of the Night

Certainly an interesting experience, feels almost like something I would’ve found on the Xbox or PS2, has a nice surrealist art style, solid level design, and although the platforming has a few issues it usually feels tightly controlled. If you like the demo, the full title is absolutely packed with content, definitely worth the asking price. I wouldn’t play this with a controller though, the control scheme is absolutely foul for controllers.

8/10

I haven’t finished the game yet, but I don’t know how long it is so I’ll give a quick untidy review now (I think I must be halfway through)

-The theme is very charming. The closest thing I could compare it to is a brazilian version of Little Nemo. But beware of the childish look. The game is rather gory so I wouldn’t actually recomend it for children.

The story and ambiance are very poetic. But I have a little problem with the music that is simplistic and repetitive. I discovered there’s a nice song in the credits but the devs didn’t use it in the rest of the game. They should have used some royalty free music to complement the rest of the music that seems to be original production.

e-River Cabin Journal

e-River Cabin Journal

Once upon a time, I got fed up with city life and decided to move to Alaska, live in the middle of no where and get away from it all.

I didn’t know jack and froze to death the first night.

Twice upon a time, I got fed up with the city and left for a cabin in the middle of Alaska.

I still didn’t know jack, (and didn’t really know that I didn’t know jack) and died two days later.

Thrice upon a time, … yeah I got fed up with the city and bought a cabin in the middle of Denali National Park in Alaska.

This game 100% is not for everyone.. The Devs have made this prettty ckear,, I did some homework on this one.. It’s not an easy game..At times I am left scratching my head.. Getting started (In my case in the Oct) is tougher then any game I’ve ever played…. you log into a cold cabin with no firewood.. you can’t even read as it’s just too cold.. meaning you have to go try to chop wood first.. I got hammered by a bear,,, managed to kill him then simply walked away from the tree I dropped…. (why not just go back and finis?) so you lose the energy.. have to try again and hope to God you can just manage to get enough wood to warm light the fire and get the cabin warm enough to read……
