Office Strike War - Multiplayer Battle Royale

Office Strike War - Multiplayer Battle Royale

This game is great! You can get to kick your office coleagues' asses and not get sued for that :)))

Jokes aside, the gameplay is dynamic, and the leveling up scheme makes you feel edgy, looking for hp and xp. Great idea! Enough of the AAA games crap, this is where gold lies. Can’t wait for it to get popular!

Age of Fear 3: The Legend

Age of Fear 3: The Legend

I might not have bothered with a review since I need to be either incredibly impressed or massively wound up by a game to do it, but some dwarves asked me to.

I’m not kidding. I finished the first expansion (which was dirt cheap, short, well made and pretty fun overall) and then my little dwarfy soldiers had a conversation where they talked about how reviews help indie games and asked me to post one. Normally this would really annoy me, but considering how much time I’ve put into the completely free ‘Age of Fear: The Free World’ and the fact it genuinely made me laugh I’ll go along with the beardy little gits and pen this. I’ll do the usual and write sections about the different bits of the game that jump out at me, but I will say that you can stop reading, go download the absolutely free ‘Age of Fear: The Free World’, play that and decide if you’ll like this game based on your experience there. It’s free, which I might have mentioned already, has everything but a main story arc and is constantly being updated, which is crazy. Free game, yet still gets big updates? Yeah. Anyways, back to AoF 3.

Very good games and I played for 60+ hours now in this series. ThoughI have some feelings and suggestions:

First I go with some defaults and potential improvement in my opinion.

1. Difference race is not very well balanced.

1.1 Death power is too OP in general because the catapult of death is the only accessible one to capture, and super OP and can be resurrected. In late game you can even set up a catapult legion. Also. a legion of Lich is also OP because they can resurrect each other. No mentioning wights can be the solution to almost all hard fights. Basically a legion made up of death hydra, catapult and lich is way powerful than any combination in other races: high aoe damage with morale decrease for all, all-resurrect-able and not influenced by morale. Even units as dark knights which would be quite popular units in other races but it is off the top 3 OP list in Death units.

Very well crafted game, especially for a small indie dev. While this has elements of a fantasy rpg (spellcasting units, magical items, fighting “monsters”, etc.) it is an excellent turn-based tactics game. Each of the factions that you can play feels unique and requires different tactics to win battles. The stories can be hit and miss, sometimes they are funny and compelling, other times just ho-hum, but that is par for the course in even AAA games from my experience. Possibly the most impressive thing of all is the prompt, thoughtful replies that the dev, Les, provides to questions and comments on the discussion board. I bought the whole works in their “Stay at Home” bundle for about $20 and I have had more fun with this game than many titles I have bought for 2-3X as much and I still have plenty of content left to explore. GREAT WORK!!! Support indie games–buy this now!

Never judge a book by its cover. I was very surprised when found this diamond among many of indie-games. Nice design is pleasing to the eyes, great music, very nice story line, which is voiced in the form of a fantasy story - all that are creates the atmosphere of the game, that very addictive and don’t let you go. Very nice Turn-based fights like Heroes or Kings Bounty series. You can proceed main story or play random fights to raise your hero and troops. HUGE amount of artifacts and items. Random encounters with rewards and traps. If you like hardcore you can choose “Death Seeker” difficulty, that gives a huge challenge to every experienced player. You even can choose option “Items for troops” and gear them with artefacts, that can break difficulty but also can give a new experience for playing.

Magi

Magi

This is an old and fun game that used to be sold by the standalone developer. It’s a shame strategies are not still posted, for it can really be challenging to win. Music soundtrack is pretty iconic… I don’t think the developer supports it anymore but if you’re into magic duels then you’ve probably spent worse money than this.

It’s “TUG-OF-WAR” with fireballs and techno-liches.

Other games come to mind, like

“Aeon Command” (space battles)

“Samurai vs Zombies Defense” (goofy samurai warfare)

and

“Puzzle Chronicles” (the illegitimate child of Tetris and Mortal Kombat)

These game elements are constant:

  • try to hold the line

  • manage your defences

  • beef-up your attacks

  • spam your enemies to death

In Magi, you start by opening magical “channels.” These channels enable your spells and strengthen them. Then, it’s a real-time battle as you queue-up spells for casting. It’s like the building queue in Starcraft or Civ… only it’s your shield spell, or a magic missile, or summoning an imp. As your mage is casting one spell, you have time to set up the next. And the next. You can plan a bit… or panic. Apparently, I’m still fond of panicking.

Templar Battleforce

Templar Battleforce

I was in a mood for strategy and blowing things up one day. I found this game while I was cruising through my queue and pretty much bought it impulsively. How’d that turn out? Surprisingly well. While I haven’t gotten too far into the game yet, it did provide me with some inspiration to start a Let’s Play of something that wasn’t a dating sim. (And the dating sim Let’s Play didn’t even begin that long ago either.)

Before I get to the review, this is important to note. The thing about this game that may either attract or repel you is that it is heavily reliant on dice rolls.

Templar Battleforce is a sci-fi turn-based strategy game played on square grid maps with a focus on squad tactics. While it does have a story that accompanies the campaign, it is the gameplay, post-combat unit development, and a surprising amount of polish that makes this game so enjoyable. It doesn’t re-invent anything within the genre, but the mechanics are tight and well-explained, and the unit progression will hook players who, like me, love to work towards a better and better team.

TL;DR at the end.

Defend the Rook

Defend the Rook

Great game, highly recommend trying it out. It might seem a little easy at first for this type of game where often you are meant to die a bunch and slowly become stronger with upgrades. You have 1-10 ascension levels, but the first 4 are super easy and then 7+ becomes pretty tough. I’m not super excited about how it scales at 7+ because it feels like artificial difficulty, everything starts to cost twice as much so you can’t upgrade everything. I would prefer the enemies becoming more challenging rather than having less upgrades.

Neat roguelite strategy game. Beat it on the highest difficulty, enjoyed figuring it out. I had fun with it and recommend it, but I’ll list stuff that bothered me:

-Your core loadout before any towers/traps are your castle and three heroes (warrior/rogue/mage) by default. You unlock variants of these classes as you play. It quickly became apparent to me that the easiest way to win was “buff the ranged characters” and turtle in the corner with defensive buffs. It’d be nice if the upgrades supported different goals. I believe I had one playthrough where my warrior carried me, and it’s because he had full map range, so he was basically a third ranged character.

Heroes of Steel RPG

Heroes of Steel RPG

All I can say is, “Wow”! What a great game! This is a must-have if you like these types of games. Heroes of Steel puts the Tactical in tactical turn-based RPGs. With constant developer support and responsiveness, bugs are non-existent and the gameplay experience keeps getting better and better with more content and constant user-suggested improvements. Refreshing to say the least.

As for the gameplay….outstanding. I love these types of old school games. Graphics and soundwise, that’s what this feels like. Almost nostalgic. However, don’t let that fool you, this game is very current and plenty sophisticated in its combat-oriented content. You truly are the difference in winning and losing battles. Your positioning, movement, order of attack, buffs, de-buffs, spells, etc…make all the difference in almost every battle. If you get careless, you get hurt. If you pay attention, you can still get hurt but you should be able to implement a strategy to win and advance and it’s very satisfying.

Picked up Heroes of Steel during Xmas sale when it was going for 60% off (that’s cheaper than the cost of a movie here and hundreds more hours of entertaining tactical fun) and have had a blast with it so far. Came into this game blind, after seeing that a friend had played it quite a bit during the holiday season and will have to say that it is one of the most memorable turn based experiences I’ve had. So here’s a fervent thank you from me to the developers for making a very engaging turn based tactics game with good depth and options!

The game portrays an aesthetic I have a massive soft spot for - Post-apocalyptic colonial Roman Empire. The environment art is well polished and beautiful, and the art style is self-consistent and immersive. I really feel like I’m somewhere in Carthage. The cities feel appropriate for their size – Maadoran feels like a dirty, bustling metropolis down on its luck. The design of the armours and weapons are all era-appropriate, with proper, real-life names (e.g. Lorica Segmentata).

Real player with 391.5 hrs in game

In brief: AoD ditches many of the genre long established staples to focus on the roleplaying, and this it does amazingly well; there really is nothing quite like it out there. The EA version is very much playable (there are less bugs than in many releases). The combat, which has been much the focus of attention due to its difficulty, is not awesome, but it gets the job done and it is optional.

***Since for some reason Steam has decided to implement a character limit to user reviews (what’s up with that Gabe?), you can read my whole review here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/230070/discussions/0/666827315713399977/ , but below is a very long extract:

Volseons

Volseons

Volseons is an RPG/turn-based combat type of game set in a land-locked country called Dynanzium. Take the role of Lerdstrat, one of king’s most loyal servants, as an opposing faction sets him up for the assassination attempt at king’s life. Use powerful monsters known as “Volseons” and venture around the world in search of redemption and truth.

Being creatures of immense power over the elements of the world, Humanity has found many ways to manipulate and control them in order to build up their civilisations and advance technology, while also using their power to wage war with other human factions.

Features:

  • Journey through a prologue story arc which sets the tone and backstory of the main game (planned for release in 2019).

  • Fight and Capture multiple unique Volseons, all with their own traits. (With a lot more Volseons to come!)

  • Challenge powerful opponents as you take on a slew of difficult enemy teams where your strategy will be awarded.

Our story

We are proud to be here with our first major game that we want to continue developing. Currently, we made this prologue as a proving grounds of our idea as a side project in our free time. Next up, we want to get to the next level: going full-time developers, and for that, we need help!

For our planned developments for Volseons, please see below.

Planned features for Volseons:

  • Detailed character arcs over six story epics. Following a number of characters across the world of Dynanzium, in Volseons you are not simply playing one character or one party of characters, you will instead experience intricate stories of multiple characters from different civilisations and factions as they interact and wage war with each other, seeing the good and bad in every major character instead of seeing characters as one note heroes and villains.

  • Five epic regions to explore and beyond… in ONE game! In 2000, Pokemon Gold featured two existing regions to explore which certainly made the game feel really epic. Unfortunately, as Pokemon games expanded and spread across multiple cartridges and games consoles, players cannot visit these old areas on the later versions of the game. We have built a structure which will allow us to release new regions, areas, Volseons etc into the base game, allowing players the freedom to go back to the old regions and as well as to allow us to update the old regions with new content, allowing us to make a true expansive and epic world.

  • Six years of planned content. Volseons, by nature are adaptive, growing beasts. Our game will reflect this as we release a steady flow of content over the next six years. We plan to release each story epic around a year apart from the last one, each epic will come with a new region to explore with the exception of the last one… which will be something truly special. In addition, we will release additional features and balance adjustments to the game periodically.

  • The progress of this prologue will transfer to the main game, this prologue will give players an early opportunity to give us feedback for improvements of the main game as well as allowing early adopters to capture some rare Volseons for later use!

  • A whole encyclopedia of monsters (that we call the “Necromonium”), with around 30 Volseons already in game with their own unique passive ability and typing combinations which gives each Volseon it’s own unique flavour. In addition, each Volseon has their own expansive moves pool. Volseons will be released regularly in each major update and may also be released in events.

  • Truly challenging content. We are creating a strategy RPG that will have meaningful difficulty settings and optional challenge modes. For an example of this difficulty, a boss fight on a higher difficulty setting will use drastically different Volseon team compositions that are made to challenge the player much more than the normal difficulty, no inflated stats rubbish here!

  • Challenge modes will introduce additional challenges such as introducing permanent death to your Volseons if they are defeated or restricting the amount of Volseons you can capture and use like a “Nuzlocke”. Many more challenge modes will also be included that will give hardcore players very meaningful feats to accomplish.

It’s good! Already worth playing in its current state early access state, if you’re fine with no ending.

Gets a great amount of mileage out of just reducing RPG combat down to essentials and making sure you have to weigh each option available in combat. Kinda like Into the Breach in that regard, both very elegant designs that are more interesting than the majority of their larger competitors.

Real player with 42.6 hrs in game

Game is fun, fully playable even with some endgame stuff (although more content to come) and the devs are great and responsive. If you like hard games, the hard mode seems pretty reasonable about very hard but not unfair. the easier difficulty felt right too, not effortless and boring but much less likely to lose a fight. (I recommend the hard difficulty the game is not possible to game over, and failures are always a learning situation but its nice when that you can swap between them if you are feeling particularly demoralized). I highly suggest checking this one out if you like some party based turn based rpg goodness on the harder side.
