Core Defense

Core Defense

Very well-designed Tower Defense game that also incorporates active elements (abilities which you can “cast” after a cooldown) and a random reward mechanism (“choose 1 out of 3”) after each wave of enemies.

This means that all upgrades and additional abilities/towers are basically randomized but you get to choose one out of a random selection (which still allows for a lot of choice), and the randomness is also tailored to what you already have,

so there won’t ever be a completely useless upgrade up for selection.

So adding a review after testing a bit of the new DLC.

The game is difficult, punishes small mistakes immediately and is addictive to a point. The amount of hours I have despite the lack of content beyond “now do it again but slightly harder” speaks to how quick it is to fire up a new game and carry on.

Prior to the DLC an update added a feature I’d been looking for to speed up to 5x so I could quickly go through waves where I don’t have to take an active part, but along with this patch the game has started to run very slowly. Not something I’d expect from something that looks like a decade old flash game.

Fury Unleashed

Fury Unleashed

I don’t do a lot of reviews, but I felt compelled to a proper one because this game is really, really fun.

Action/platformer/roguelite/RPG

First of all, I’m on the wrong side of 45 and still gaming strong, but it presents a quandry: I love “old school” games, but - I am too old and can’t game as well as I used too. The secondary problem I run into is “loving the idea” of old school games but after the novelty of pixilated graphics wears off, I can’t see them as anything but ugly. Fury Unleashed effectively beat the hell out of those problems. It has an AMAZING amount of customization of difficulty allowing for old people like myself to really enjoy it as well as the crazy kids hat love games being 25 viagra hard. The graphics are really sharp and not extravagant, in short it’s pretty and runs butter smooth. It really seems like they thought of everything up to and including a pet peeve of mine where games that use the Steam Workshop make you download the workshop stuff outside of the game, but this integrates it into the character select screen so you literally see the cosmetics you can dl from the workshop and simply select it in-game.

TL;DR 10/10 Xom howls with laughter!

What would the product be if you mixed together the creativity of Comix Zone, the unrelenting action of Metal Slug, and the audacity of action flicks from the 80’s? Probably this. Fury Unleashed is the first game I want to review, and rightly so.

To begin with, the Hero starts off with one SMG, one choppy blade, grenades, and boots of stomping. Throughout the course of the story, you get all the silly loot you could want and more. Freezing shrapnel grenades? Got ‘em. Rocket launcher with poison warheads? Sure! Unholy blade? No problem. Triple jump boots? Go wild! In addition to this arsenal of fun, the enemies you face are varied and challenging in distinctive ways. In fact, the same deadly shenanigans you pull on them can just as easily apply to you. This is most noticeable in the second comic book, where enemy soldiers can (and will) use the same weapons you do.

Goat over it

Goat over it

After finishing the game I can finally rage about this damn game. It is definitely unpolished. If, for example, you do a Backflip, your legs turn into cooked noodles and just flip away even though you are landing on your feet and therefore lose. If You do the exact same action twice, you may get different outcomes. For example pressing “E” until the goat can’t turn any higher may result in the goat just standing there(which isfine), or in flipping over(which tilts alot), at the exact same spot(like Starting points). Furthemore the “Hitbox” when you hit your Body on something and you lose sometimes feels just off. Sometimes it doesnt count even though you are clearly hitting it, and sometimes you just die standing close to an object and you guess you hit your head.

Barbara-ian

Barbara-ian

Game Details

Published by: Owlbear Ltd.

Developed by: Owlbear Ltd.

Genre: Action/Indie/Early Access

Release Date: 17 Jul, 2015

Completionist Gameplay: Endless

“Barbara-ian, a mythical badass with perma-rage & a penchant for smashing. “

The Gameplay

Barbara-ian is a top-down run and gun action game with a female protagonist. This should already make you want to play the game. If you need further convincing, read on.

With only one hit point standing between you and certain death (and the loss of your beloved Tome of Laser Vision), Barbara-ian is the true definition of exciting. If you liked Hotline Miami, I would absolutely recommend buying this. The game being in Early Access shouldn’t deter you. Barbara-ian is fully playable and is not missing any key components. The only reason it is still in Early Access is because the developers want to continue adding more content for us to enjoy.

This game will anger you.

This game will kill you… a lot.

But all the deaths and quick restarts

make completing a level so satisfying!

Pros:

  • Wonderful soundtrack

  • Fast-paced combat

  • Nice voxel graphics

Cons:

  • Can’t switch the weapon

  • Sometime is too dark

This is a good indie game!

Patterna

Patterna

An enjoyable puzzle game, Patterna kept my attention for dozens and dozens of hours. You need to determine which cells are or are not marked as part of ‘the pattern’ based on given distribution/adjacency information, somewhat akin to Minesweeper or Hexcells. Like the latter of those, all puzzles are set up in a way that you never strictly need to make a random guess.

The thing that’s really singular about Patterna in my view is the robustness of the random level generator. I was able to find settings that generated interesting random puzzles more often than not. The only issue is that sometimes the chain of reasoning was difficult enough that I needed to break out pen and paper and brute force the next move, which generally felt more like bookkeeping than entertainment. On the whole, though, the game did a good job of hitting a reasonable middle ground of difficulty.

Real player with 97.6 hrs in game

In short: Patterna is a challenging hard-logic puzzle game with a steep learning curve. The mechanics are varied and the replayability infinite, but it is very rough around the edges with poor and sometimes frustrating implementation. If you have a low tolerance for bad UI, stay away. If you can stomach that and are a seasoned veteran of logic games, Patterna is well worth buying at full price.

In long: The developer himself compares Patterna’s mechanics to Hexcells, and one can immediately see the inspiration. But Patterna is far from a knock-off, does its own thing and expands gameplay well beyond the scope of Hexcells. Nodes may be revealed or not, may be part of a pattern or not, may carry information about nodes around them up to a distance of 3, may describe the length of the chain they are part of, may have up to 4 colors, may be unlinked, linked or directionally linked, etc. The complexity is smart and truly awe-inspiring, but comes at a cost:

Virus Blast

This game has infected me like a Virus.

I love it. It’s incredibly addicting. I purchased it two seconds after Shattered Rift’s stream. We’ve been competing for the leader board. I can’t get enough, and I’m pretty sure I robbed the developers and need to buy more copies for people or find a donate button.

All of my thanks for such an addicting game. Props to y’all.

June 21st Edit. Virus Blast is a strong candidate for my choice of Indie Game of the Year 2020. If you enjoy non-traditional games, it’s fantastic. The learning curve is a bit steep, but every upgrade you unlock feels incredibly satisfying.

I’m currently ranked 3rd on the Leader Boards, and the video above shows why Virus Blast is as satisfying to play as it is to watch.
