SUPER CHICKEN JUMPER

SUPER CHICKEN JUMPER

A charming short game that has fun, fast paced gameplay, well-made pixel art and OST, a cute story and exciting challenges, but a terrible endless mode.

The gameplay is pretty simple. you avoid/destroy objects in your way to reach the end of the level, you’ll find more weapons and accessories to help you avoid the obstacles as you progress. The game is pretty RNG dependant in nature, so sometimes you’ll find yourself in situations that are barely manageable, but that doesn’t matter that much, if you die you’ll not lose significant progress and you’ll respawn pretty quickly, that keeps the gameplay fast paced and dynamic. There’s also the eventual boss, while some of them suffer some problems regarding attack patterns and janky hitboxes, they’re fun overall.

BE-A Walker

BE-A Walker

Be warned, im gonna include a few spoilers here and there in the review, if you dont want to see them, skip this review

I saw some gameplay from a youtuber and i was immediatly attached to this game, i played the demo and had a ton of fun, even just being 2 missions, it was still very fun (but i did have my problems with the overheating, however it has been fixed with the patch so i guess it can slide) i did have my problems with the walking since it had a QWOP feeling but i learned it after a bit and slowly started to master it and it wasnt that bad to learn.

BE-A Walker is a sidescrolling re-enactment of the plot of James Cameron’s Avatar. You pilot a bipedal mech across the surface of an alien planet blasting and stomping on the natives as you go. Except you do that exact same thing…. repeatedly. For the whole game.

This game is definitely fun for a bit, but every mission is pretty much the same, broken up occasionally with a ‘walk through the base without stepping on the blind scientists’ mission or ‘walk through a minefield’ mission, which mostly just slow the game down, without improving it much.

La-Mulana 2

La-Mulana 2

9/10. Very solid. Highly recommended. But it’s not as good as La-Mulana 1. Let’s look at it, shall we?

First thing you should know is that there is exactly one other game like La-Mulana (and the original freeware La-Mulana, but we’re talking about the remake), and that game is La-Mulana 2. So there’s no alternative, really. La-Mulana is a brutal puzzle-metroidvania, and until La-Mulana 2 came along, La-Mulana was the only brutal puzzle-metroidvania. La-Mulana 2 features easily 100 hours of exploration and puzzle-solving. My in-game completion time was over 106 hours, which is a lot. I like to describe La-Mulana 1 as a cross between a puzzle hunt and a kick to the face. La-Mulana 2 is somewhat less dependent on masochism, which is why 1 was better.

La-Mulana 2 is a worthy sucessor to the first game, but it shows some rough edges that will hopefully be adressed in future updates. It does improve some areas, but in others falls short.

+ Positives:

  • Platforming and contronl over your character is much better than La-Mulana 1. You have much more control mid air and level design takes this in consideration. You can also grab from stairs during a jump. Can also crouch to evade stuff and use in puzzles. This is a big improvement over the rigid controls of the original.

Ruby & Majesty: Treasure Team

Ruby & Majesty: Treasure Team

Ruby & Majesty is a fantastic puzzle-based action-exploration game. It was designed with solo play in mind, hence the extremely simple controls (one joystick per character, no buttons needed outside of menus), but the puzzles are compelling and creative enough that playing with a friend is still a rich and satisfying experience. Plus, as the characters each have their own unique roles to play in every puzzle, playing with a friend essentially nets you two games in one– just switch controllers and start a new game, perhaps in Flipped mode for an even fresher experience.

Here are my two cents about this game, it starts out great as a mix between early Wario titles on gameboy, Knytt series and Chip’s challenge, not sure if a lot of people played it, but you can throw Nub’s Adventure style wise into the list too.

It doesn’t take long to be dragged into this strange world, where puzzles are part of everything including gameplay, story, characters.. the world itself.

-Story- 7/10

Unfortunately despite how much I liked the concept, it doesn’t explain much or work well towards giving you more sensical clues about what is going on, a lot of npcs you find have only few dialog lines, upon completing a big chunk of puzzles and challenges sometimes you feel like going back to the hub area and finding something new, some kind of subtle rewards for your exploration and adventures. But everything stays the same. You can listen to the tracks that you found, or speak to the npcs that you rescued, they will stay in their tiny rooms, and it can be a bit frustrating to visit the new rooms upon each new rescue, because it won’t show which rooms you already visited and their door portals have identical indications. Even though the interaction with these npcs is pointless, you still feel like you want to get some kind of reward for your troubles, and tick those boxes. Story wise it really got me excited but unfortunately I felt like it gassed out by the end. I personally wasn’t satisfied with the endings that I got. I understand the idea behind interpreting things, but I didn’t get enough material to work with. But I can give a big plus for all those moments where Ruby and Majesty interacted with each other, it was a nice touch to keep things fresh and had a nice charm to it. I don’t know what was the vision and philosophy behind how the story should be delivered to the player, but it left me disappointed. Sorry.

Wonhon: A Vengeful Spirit

Wonhon: A Vengeful Spirit

After playing the demo I waited for this for so long…. and the full game surpasses my expectations. More enemy types and mechanisms and more brain racking to finish a mission. Also if you played the demo, the full game lets you CARRY OVER YOUR SAVE FILE. Awesome.

So what’s this game? Well in addition to the descriptions above I must say, the AIs can be pretty aggressive… not knowing the map fully on first tries, you are prone to die a lot. (remember: your hon gauge fills up when newly possessing someone and use a bit of that to dash through walls at the end of the gauge to get away) The game does let you play with fewer enemies if you die too many times or are having trouble but no real manual difficulty setting which I like. It’s immersive. You can’t choose the difficulty in life. It was nightmare mode for the Koreans in 1920 every day.

I was captivated by the E3 presentation so much that I had to play. I love horror, especially eastern stuff like Fatal Frame, so I might be a bit biased.

It’s a fun game, but quite repetitive. There are a lot of bumps that I’ll explain, but nothing to serious to stop you from playing. It’s significantly easier than it looks, even offering to replay missions with fewer enemies when you die often, and never (visibly) penalizing you for it.

Much of the game consists of three different types of missions; slaying, in which you’ll kill everyone in sight, fetch quests, where you’ll sneak around to get something for some spirits eternal rest, and the unfortunate bulk of them, will be rescue missions (escorts). The Ai can only really get stuck in the same places you would, which you will likely memorize and avoid, which is bearable, it’s okay as they follow you quite closely at an inconsistent speed. Most of Challenge mode consists of escorts, which is off putting, but the main game is enjoyable enough for 4-5 hours, especially in terms of rich atmosphere, and locations through different seasons, the best part.
