Occult Crime Police

Occult Crime Police

Personally I don’t know the “Phoenix Wright” game(s) that many reviewers are referring to.

I just think that this game was fun. It has amusing animations, some good dialogue and funny moments.

This game’s basically a visual novel-type with a few “puzzles” that involve presenting evidence to contradict vitness statements.

Playing time’s around 5 hours.

It’s a free game, try it!

Thanks devs!

It’s criminal that this game is free. It’s basically an indie take on Phoenix Wright, done really well. It took me 5 hours to play (and I was streaming and reading the dialogue aloud, so a normal play would probably be shorter), but it was a memorable experience. Great writing, interesting characters, notable plot twists, and great animation and sound.

It’s clearly the setup for a full-length series, so I am eager to see that manifest. I’ll happily toss a few dollars to the devs via their optional cosmetic DLC too; they earned it with this.

Aberration Analyst

You are an analyst in a very secretive, underground organization. Scour tabloid headlines, police reports and other sources in order to locate supernatural threats to the safety and sanity of your fellow citizens.

Players have various tools at their disposal in order to achieve their goal.

Tabloids are a great place to start looking for information about monster sightings and attacks. Unfortunately, the tabloids also have two major weaknesses. First, they are almost totally unreliable, and should not be trusted by themselves. Second, their availability is limited, only ten headlines are released per day. Still, they make a good place to start identifying possible monster activity.

More reliable than tabloids, reports come in two varieties, Police and Coroner. Reports are available for each city, but will cost money to access. They provide factual information, but will not mention monsters or anything that might threaten the reporter’s credibility.

Selecting your team is an important step in the process of monster research. Make sure you try to identify the type of monster you are going after, otherwise your team may not be properly prepared.

Lore is collected as a player progresses through the game. Each attempt to take down a monster will result in small, but helpful hints that will make it easier to identify possible monster activity.

🚪 Introduction

The way Murdered: Soul Suspect expounds the afterworld postulation is very aberrant. I don’t accept the idea of being stuck in limbo until I solve the mystery of my murder or know where my body was buried. What if I wasn’t a detective or was an innocent dumbass? Am I screwed then? Will I be forever roaming the streets as a freak? What about kids? All these unanswered questions flout the paramount aspect of the afterlife that is justice for everyone. I feel like the main concept of the game was built on the protagonist’s case, ignoring everyone around him.

They okayest okay game that ever okayed, and it took me 29 disappointing hours in two gos (played once and stopped halfway because of boredom). I’m kind of upset that they made it only okay, with the great ideas they were working with.

Jokes aside, it’s a lukewarm game made out of a great idea, but it misses the mark in basically every single aspect so much that it’s a perfect 6/10 game.

The basic issue with the game that they try to do everything with collectibles (There are 242 collectibles). To tell you creepypasta/camp fire stories, to solve investigations, to uncover ghost graffities because ghost kids gonna be ghost kids, and also to get information about your beloved past wife, the love of your life…wait what?

Blackwell Deception

Blackwell Deception

Rosangela Blackwell is a struggling author living in New York, and a medium. Enter Joey Mallone, a ghost and spirit guide tied to the female members of the Blackwell family. When Rosa’s aunt, Lauren Blackwell, passes after being in a coma for decades, Joey is ‘released’ from Lauren and enters Rosa’s life. Details are revealed throughout the five installments of the Blackwell series regarding the female members of the Blackwell family, how Joey came to be, what happened to Aunt Lauren to trap her in a comatose state, etc. Together, Rosa and Joey seek out and help tormented ghosts trapped in the physical world cross over to “the other side” throughout the series.

Blackwell Deception is the 4th game in the Blackwell Series and so far I think it’s actually my favorite! What really stands out to me is the story. I feel like the makers have begun to really hone their story telling abilities. This game feels like the climax of the overall story arc. It draws in elements from all the previous games and builds on them and though some parts were predictable (many P&C Adventure games are) it did manage provide some unpredictable moments that I didn’t see coming.

Blackwell Unbound

Blackwell Unbound

Blackwell Unbound is a second game in a Blackwell franchise, being yet another point-n-click adventure with pixel-art yet modern approach. This one is actually a budget prequel, starring Rosa’s auntie and jazzy setting of older New York.

The engine is quite old, but trusty and should work just fine, despite sometime being weird about using anti-aliasing over the pixel-art. Mostly when characters sprites are being scaled. It has a weird thing where all dialogue would be insta-skipped after pressing Shift+Tab, commonly used for Steam overlay. Pressing Tab will fix it.

I wish (like many others) that Steam gave ‘meh’ as a review option. I don’t want to say ‘not recommended’ as it’s not actively bad, but it’s not great either. So I’ll just summarise a few of the pros and cons and hopefully that will help you decide whether this game is for you or not. As context, I played Blackwell Legacy immediately before I played this, and I started off liking that, but by the end of the second game I think some of the mechanics are wearing a little thin.

Pros

  • Music much better than Blackwell Legacy (which was pretty irritating and there seemed to be no option to turn it off)

The Painscreek Killings

The Painscreek Killings

Summary

Fantastic adventure game with only minor flaws. Play time for me was around 15 hours or so plus another couple of hours for finding the last few items that I had missed originally.

You are playing a journalist who investigates a series of murders that happened a few years back and were never solved. The majority of the game consists of searching through various locations for letters, notes and other clues that allow you to piece together the events that led to the murders and identify the killer. The game is fairly non-linear, most locations are available right from the start although there are quite a few rooms and a handful of areas that you first have to unlock (literally, i.e. you need to find a key/code).

Walking simulator that quickly evolves from liesurely exploration of an abandoned gated community into a full-blown murder mystery adventure game.

Every place has its secrets. Every suspect is hiding something. Look through drawers, cupboards, the homes and belongings of the persons you are investigating to lead you closer to truth.

You play as an investigative reporter with one simple objective: Solve a cold case file by determining who killed wealthy socialite philanthropist Vivian Roberts and provide a front page photo. Can you find the murder weapon? Can you learn the whole truth about what happened in the now vacant Painscreek?

Ghost Hunters Corp

Ghost Hunters Corp

This Game is a Gem. It sets itself apart from phasmo in many ways. It’a way more interactive than phasmo.

I love that we can buy/bring as many items as we want. We are not limited in this game.

You can pick up items around the map and throw them about and make the ghosts mad. Or even take some of the cursed map assets back to base for more money. The Ghost can follow you back to the Van, and even break the door off. House doors also get yeeted.

I’m used to give a chance to early access games, even if it means I could encounter bugs, crashes and lags (I’ve been playing ARK survival since the start in june 2015 !) But Ghost Hunters Corp is not an alpha game, it’s very well made and simply needs a few more contents to be released.

Don’t trust those raging players that yell it’s a copy of Phasmo. I also play Phasmo and it’s absolutly not the same game. Of course, the idea is the same, but the gameplay is slightly different: in GHC, you need to find which entity you seek before exorcism it. And AI’s behavior and reaction are different. The fear it gives you is also not the same. I like jumping on one and the other as if I did different missions, as being another kind of hunter 😊 It’s a real pleasure, except when I go to bed after that!

The Blackwell Legacy

The Blackwell Legacy

Beautiful. Even after playing it 3 times in a row (gameplay, classic commentary, then both commentary for final achievement) I’m still fascinated by this game.

Blackwell Legacy is the first game of the Blackwell series, first game (for a long time, if I remember well from the commentary) of Dave Gilbert. It’s a supernatural mystery-detective story (Ghosts!) and gameplay-wise it’s a mix of visual novel (Quite a lot of talking, big amounts of info, cutscenes) and point-and-click adventure games. These genres mix really well the solid story - there is always something to pay attention for, or something to do.

Every once in a while you accidentally stumble upon a game, may it be because you got it in a bundle or because you thought it looked nice. Mostly the series are good, or good enough, decent at best in other cases. However, there are rare cases where you’d actually become hooked to a series.

The first time I began playing this game I only did so because of the Steam icon. I already had the game on a bundle at some point in time, but like most games I got in indie bundles I never touched it. That was, until I was going through my Steam library, looking for a game to play. The one thing that caught my eyes though was the aforementioned game icon, which was basically an icon of Rosangela Blackwell. As the screenshots already show, it’s the redhead woman who wears glasses, two of my favorite things when it comes to women. But, okay, it did pique my interest a bit, would it manage to keep me interested?

The Darkside Detective

The Darkside Detective

The Darkside Detective revolves around Detective McQueen and his slightly thick-headed sidekick Officer Dooley, who together form the Darkside Division of the Twin Lakes Police Department. Twin Lakes is a city which has a long history with cults, monsters and other spooky things but thanks to McQueen and Dooley its citizens have nothing to worry about, most of the time at least.

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes.

Now, tell me about the game.

It’s a pretty simplistic point-and-click comedy adventure game, simplistic in graphics as well as interface and gameplay but more on that later.

Real player with 9.5 hrs in game

The Darkside Detective is an enjoyable point-and-click game which has it all - humour, toilet humour, wise references, interesting characters, sound research and a lovely attitude towards life as a whole.

Disclaimer: I will say “Yes, recommended”, but be warned that there is lots to improve in this project.

However, I did find it too easy. Obviously, by the humour and topics discussed in the game, it’s not made for 13 y.o. people, however, most of the puzzles were so easy! As soon as you’re done with each, you’d feel as though you’re yet to start. It’s classic puzzles in a traditional setup. We’ve been going at them for at least 25 years (happy birthday, Myst!!), and I am bored of having to solve the same-ol-same-ol.
