Black Closet

Black Closet

Are you good enough to get into a prestigious college?

Well, you better hope you are, because that’s your ultimate goal as Black Closet’s main character Elsa Jackson. Actually achieving that goal requires a successful term as president of your school’s student council, and achieving that goal requires putting the lid on several potential scandals without damaging your own credibility too badly. Let me tell you, there are a lot of potential scandals, and other forces at work may end up making your life more difficult. But first you need to identify and neutralize the traitor within your ranks…

Black Closet is one of my favorite games. The characters are interesting and sometimes complex, the story is entertaining and contains some interesting branches, and the gameplay is a really fun application of resource management to solve mysteries.

Elsa, the player character, is the president of the student council and must strategically deploy her “minions” (the other student council members) to resolve various crises so that their fancy private school remains respected while also trying not to ruin the student council’s reputation with the rest of the student body. These crises vary from mundane (the daughter of someone important might be failing a class) to serious (a student has gone missing). You need to assign the right minion for various investigative tasks that match their personal skills (for example, you don’t want to send the nice friendly girl to yell at a culprit or send the introvert to gather info via a friendly chat with a suspect) while also balancing your minions' needs because they will be temporarily unavailable if their workload causes too much stress. The cases are randomized, so this is great for replayability!

Chicken Holmes - Chanislavski Whispers

Chicken Holmes - Chanislavski Whispers

i have played an incredible number of games in my life and this is the one with the single worst case of localization i have ever come across. surely it has been translated from spanish by an online translator like google translate, but even then i’d expect something better than this. other than that, you just click around, try to make sure you click on everything clickable, or you’ll get stuck, solve a couple stupid puzzles and try to find some semblance of sense in the story. even the cutesy characters don’t evoke anything positive, when you can make little sense of what the hell is going on. something with english that bad shouldn’t be offered in english to the public. avoid this mess at all costs, including the prequel.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

Exactly how you remembered the game from childhood. Objectively the best Carmen SanDiego installment. Has the most plot and character development. I have experienced a major issue with saving my game though. The game is supposed to automatically save and in my case it just does not work properly. Really hope this can get fixed soon because essentially all progress is lost and it’s super annoying. Worth the $9.99 price if you really want that nostalgia but if you’ve never played before, consider holding off for a discount or look for an indication that the save feature has been repaired.

I played this repeatedly as a kid who owned the CD game and I’m glad I can get a chance to play again now. The characters and banter are just as charming as I remember and the puzzles are fun but simple enough for a child. And the game involves traveling and learning facts about locations all over the world while solving clues so it’s very educational, but not in a boring way. The secret agent/detective aspect of the game remains the focus and it’s well done in my opinion.

The save issue that was reported at release is also fixed. I was hesitant to buy earlier when I heard about it but I tried it out and I can save normally. Just exit the game normally (by clicking the green light on Hawkin’s vest) and there should be no issue. And press Space to skip the intro or outro cutscene.

SpyParty

SpyParty

Okay, so I never ever never write game reviews on steam. Until now, because SpyParty is such a great game, and I want to maybe get some people who treat the game like a party game to view it from a different angle, and to briefly sum up what the game is, and what it isn’t.

The gameplay/content:

The spy is hiding in the party, while the sniper tries to discern them from the innocent partygoers. So far, so easy; especially since when booting up the game for the first time, you will be presented with a severely simplified experience, as to not overwhelm a new player. Then new missions for the spy to complete, as well as fresh venues to play on will be unlocked after a certain number of wins, to gradually deepen the experience.

So I never really played video games until I found SpyParty. And what a challenge. At first glance, its EZPZ. You’ll jump into a mode where you learn 4 missions and play other people with just about the same number of games and play. You’ll play until you kind of figure out what you’re playing and then your world expands; A LOT. You get access to 4 other missions and the sniper has to look for more.

The more you play, the more you realize you need to be like the AI to succeed. Yes, you need to do missions but it takes SOOO much skill to know how to be an AI and not get shot by the top players of this game. I have 9000 games played and it still doesn’t cease to teach me new things about the game each time I die.

Who is the Liar?

Who is the Liar?

I loved the art direction chosen for this game. It combines pieces that look like they came out of the board game Clue with beautiful, more realistic 3D scenarios and comics iconographies. The game also has an engaging story and charming characters.

With all of these elements at the developer’s disposal, the game practically begs for more content. Since it is still in early access, it is sure to develop into a great game.

Very promising!

A fun game, very well produced. The visuals are incredible, combining cartoon 2D and stunning 3D. A humorous narrative, it reminds me of the movie Knives Out with its crazy eccentric family. Looking forward to play the next stories in the final version.

Gangsters 1920

Gangsters 1920

Gangsters 1920 is an interesting game that I received from a bundle. The game features an agent walking around through a labyrinth of connected rooms. After figuring out how the game should be played I had an enjoyable time exploiting many bugs and glitches and laughing at the absurdity of what was happening. At one point I was walking and there was a skeleton prop in the corner of the room, the item wasn’t green so I wasn’t sure if it would be interactive like other items in the game and upon touching it I instantly died. This was no problem evidently as I simply respawned in the room before the current room I was in. At another point there was a small ball rolling back and forth in a room, I accidentally touched it and it was like a scene out of Indiana Jones with a giant crushing ball instant killing me, except ball was tiny and not at all threatening yet still instantly killed me. At the near free cost I got this game at, it was definitely worth the 2.4 hours of fun I got out of it. You can also totally edit the XML save file and do so cool stuff like teleporting out of the bounds of the room, interestingly enough the game actually has a linear gravity implemented that causes you to slowly fall deeper and deeper into the void.

Real player with 2.4 hrs in game

“Gangsters 1920” should be classified as a “Walking Simulator” since that’s primarily what you will be doing. Walking through a maze of 215 rooms that all look the same without any map. So you are required to have graph paper and lots of free time on your hands.

The game is supposed to be randomly generated, but it is the same exact map layout each time you start a new game. The placement of the informant, gramophone and guard are always in the same locations every time you play. Even the password never changes. It’s always: “Gramophone”. So I don’t see any of the mentioned replay value. There’s some issues with grammar and a random problem where a saved game loads showing full health, but in reality the player only has half-health. But it doesn’t really matter, because even if you die, you can still Load or Continue where you left off and keep playing. There’s no penalty for dying. In fact I finished the game is one sitting. It’s very easy, simplistic, boring and repetitious. Not at all challenging as mentioned in the description. Just monotonous. For anyone who purchased this game and is stuck, I created a map below. You begin on the Yellow Square and end on the Brown Square.

KeyHero

KeyHero

Keyhero Is A Puzzle Game.

In the game, the Key is your only tool for getting through obstacles.

After your character is blocked by a wall, you can build a bridge with keys. Wherever there’s a Key, you can get through. Accordingly, you lose the ability to move in the Key direction. There are also impassable flames, and portals that help you move over long distances on the map.

The goal of the game is to collect keys in all directions.

There are 50 levels in total.

Murder Mystery Machine

Murder Mystery Machine

Edit upon completion: In spite of the issues with the game freezing, I powered through the remainder of the episodes, and the rest of my review holds: this game is slow, the internal logic is irritating to have to guess at, the character development is minimal, and the investigation gameplay is weak. However, I will say that the overarching mystery kept me intrigued and made me want to finish all the cases. A little more work on the storytelling and some variation and flexibility in gameplay would have made a huge difference. I also didn’t play this game for anywhere near the number of hours listed; I left it on for probably a full day without playing.

So I just finished the game and am wholly unsatisfied with it.

Murder Mystery Machine is a melodramatic diorama that challenges the player to become a REAL DETECTIVE, but has the same pitfalls as any other mystery game and then some. This is also the same studio that brought to you the mediocre title (but interesting and worth a few laughs) The Ship.

The Good

Let’s start with the only good thing about the game, the environments. The game went for a modern-noir vibe and it mostly hits the mark, the environments (when they are good) are suitable and even sets the mood right.

Save Koch

Save Koch

Full disclosure: I helped the developers with some testing throughout the process and therefore have a slightly different view on various background aspects of the game. Nevertheless, I still thoroughly enjoy having a go at it. The writing is very entertaining, the scenario off the beaten track and the humour is very … how to put it … Russian? A slightly more aggressive tone, raunchy characters, the occasional crass brutality, all fuelled by the author’s upbringing in the wild 1990s, where organized crime dominated Russia’s power structures. I might have some insight knowledge concerning that last point. As for the gameplay, it’s pretty much a detective game, but one that can be played over and over again. Send out your minions, retrieve information, reach conclusions and act accordingly. Crush your enemies before they crush you. If you are into that, I can wholeheartedly recommend the game.

Save Koch:

Well, your day started brilliantly! All your illegal operations are cranking up revenue like never before. On the other hand, the night was a bit of a let-down. Sure, it was like all the other evenings where you sit down on your expensive sofa with a glass of spirits in one hand and the best cigar in the other, smiling at the achievement of being the biggest and strongest kingpin in town. But that feeling evaporated quickly when several soldiers, sent by one of your associates, arrived and took you to a safe house. That’s right, mister Jeffrey Koch, the tough Kingpin in town has a contract on his head, and he has only seven days to find out who ordered this contract, and who within your organisation is helping him. It’s time to save Koch!
