Sherlock Holmes Chapter One

Sherlock Holmes Chapter One

-Story is quite poor, from the pacing, and the direction of this so called origin story, it mostly makes more holes in Sherlock’s story than it does filling in the questions we expected to have answered in a Sherlock Holmes Origin Story. Then if you expect to have at least a decent ending for this story, then you might be sadly mistaken, it will not be a satisfying taste you’ll have when you finish the story, you also outta save files that you like or want to replay again, because this game doesn’t have any NG+ for you to replay a new game with your progress in hand. The scenes are also van be very off at times, where it feels like you’re seeing an illusion, but it was just in Sherlock’s odd imagination in the weirdest time possible or in a serious situation.

Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One, Is it that Elementary dear Watson?

Written by Happymartin

SPOILER FREE

Sherlock’s Childhood. A rarely touched on subject matter as most would prefer to think of Sherlock as a Victorian Batman; a perfect detective and badass that’s better then everyone and has practically zero flaws outside of the occasional drug habit or being eccentric. Why is Sherlock who he is? What makes him so much of a investigative genius while doing insane things like shooting up his suite or nearly dying of self posioning?

L.A. Noire

Great game with a unique premise. The facial animation is used to determine if a witness/suspect is telling the truth or lying. The voice acting is solid and the cases are based on real life cases of the era. The developers researched how police investigations were done in the 40s and it shows.

Sadly, I can’t recommend this game as you require a connection to RockStar’s Social Club. After 30+ hours of playing the game stops connecting to the SC. That means it wont' launch. I’ve reinstalled the game but still I can’t connect to the SC. Such a shame too. It was good while it lasted. I’d avoid this entirely.

Buyer beware.

I have bought the Complete edition and it did indeed have all the content and DLC. However in 2019 I had to uninstall to make room for other games, and here I am in 2021 trying to reinstall it, only to find that it only gives me some of the content.

It only gives me a couple of the patrol cases and the DLC that didn’t come with the original game and I found none of the regular game levels are there at all, which is odd as I had done most of them before I had to uninstall and still have trophies for them.

Kona

Kona

An interactive story/adventure that has a touch of puzzles, free roam exploration, and mild survival mechanics. It excells with its story-telling, its atmosphere, and its straight forward mechanics. It’s not for everyone, as it’s a bit short, mildly challenging, and not overly scary or exciting.

This is an interactive story first and foremost. The survival and puzzle elements take a back seat, and are more supplementary to the atmosphere than actual gameplay. The difficulty of the game across the board is mild, something more accessible to non-gamers or low-octane adventurers.

Welcome To Kona

This is where adventure takes Carl, our hero, who is entrusted with finding out who and why vandalises the properties of the local industrialist called Hamilton. Not long after the first couple of minutes of driving Carl has an accident and he is knocked out for a short while. As he regains consciousness behind the wheel he notices how the environment suddenly turned to white from green - snow quickly arrived in the form of a blizzard.

Now, reaching the general store will be our initial main objective. We find out more once we are there and we can also refuel our vehicle as the store also acts as a gas station. As we look at our map we can see there are a lot of houses and cabins we can visit so we can immediately get back behind the wheel and start our investigation in a town where residents is what’s very difficult to come by.

EDIT:

Flipping this to a positive as I’ve resolved my main issue, and it was a bit of an outlier. (Joystick peripheral starting to interfere with play out of nowhere).

–-

It’s great that Rockstar made this port, and obviously had fun experimenting with appropriate VR interactions. Unfortunately its skunkworky roots show through, and ultimately hamstring what could be, and tantalisingly is, a great experience.

Thankfully, what is great about it is still great:

@First:

Holy crap, LA Noire is both the most amazing thing, and the hokiest game ever, all at once :D

This title has, as of now, set a new bar on how developers should approach to remaking their games to VR.

Lets get the bad news out: yes there’s only 7 cases, and the cases are streamlined.

the game has been restructured, and now you get a new “Phelp’s office” that serves as a hub where you can choose which cases to play. In this small office, you can select your outfit and interact with various items.

Now the changes:

  • the cases has been thoroughly remake for VR. The cutscenes are now play out in real time through Phelp’s eyes.

Paradise Killer

Paradise Killer

An absolute MUST play for any fan of exploration, deduction, investigating and vaporwave games.

Paradise Island 24 is a joy to explore, especially when accompanied with the game’s amazing soundtrack.

Its characters are complex and straight out of a Metal Gear Solid meets SUDA51 marriage.

Finding the truth about what certain characters did/didn’t do made me feel bad, if I’m being honest.

Paradise Killer was such a refreshing experience amid bloated AAA grindathons and I think everyone should try it.

The basis of the game is a murder mystery and finding the culprits is what you will spend most of your time on Paradise Island 24 doing. I won’t talk too much about the background of the story or the world-building because finding these things for myself was very enjoyable, but I will say that the world you inhabit is wonderfully crafted and a joy to find out about.

Paradise Killer has an 80’s Vaporwave aesthetic, which some people may not like, however I believe that even if you don’t it will start growing on you after playing this game. The music is really good, and the way you enable new tracks in the game is great, finding them as you explore the world. Overall the audio design is good, but not brilliant. As I said the music is great, but some sounds quickly got annoying especially the player characters voice lines, as the doesn’t have many so they start to repeat quickly, but the frequency of voice lines can be changed in the settings if it annoys you as well.

The Good Life

The Good Life

Just to play through and do the main quest… eh it’s alright. Quirky but it’s fine, just play it then go do another game and forget it ever existed.

To get invested in and mess around? Hell no lol.

From release this was a janky mess of game-breakers and softlocks. The biggest of which was at least patched out (storage).

The content of the game is entirely just “go get this” with everything a convoluted web of ingredients upon ingredients of which everything is a rare drop except meat. Little to no emphasis nor encouragement when it comes being a photographer. Even with thousands of followers, keeping up with the trends on Flamingo barely gives you a few hundred a week so it’s not worth the effort when you could be running around hitting rocks or getting your daily time trial allowance.

Kickstarter backer here, so my review shows as a CD Key review, and will not count towards the overall review score.

That out of the way…

recommending with some serious caveats.

It’s a SWERY game, but not a ‘typical" SWERY game.

Weird, messy, a bit sloppy, a more Eastern POV and stereotype of life in the UK and the West.

Kb/m controls are quite clunky. Controller is better, if the game and Steam recognize your controller (PS4/PS5 recommended- the game seems to reuse towork properly with my XBox One controller).

Batman™: Arkham Knight

Batman™: Arkham Knight

MAN HALF THE GAME, I SPENT INSIDE BATMOBILE!!

Arguably the best game in Arkham series. There were obvious improvements in almost every department, be it gameplay, graphics or stealth compared to the previous Arkham titles. The best way to describe this game is that it is a mixture of both City and Origins. Story is decent, Combat system was definitely improved. They added the fear takedowns but I personally liked the double takedowns which were removed in the Knight.

The most annoying part was blowing tanks literally half of the time. But they did introduce Batmobile for the first time in Arkham series so the experience wasn’t too bad. Its definitely overused though.

Plus:

  • Decent storyline / plot, nothing too cliche

  • Combat system - hit, dodge, counter, parry, chain combos, just like your DS / Sekiros

  • Different kills ( takedowns ) / variety of gadgets that can be used. If you want to compare to other games, the tools / gadgets available is pretty decent, perfectly balanced, nothing too OP

  • Playing on hard difficulty, AIs are not dumb, they are well coded, however AI is still suffering from minor cases of ‘lack of peripheral vision’

  • Minimal to none grinding involved

The Painscreek Killings

The Painscreek Killings

Summary

Fantastic adventure game with only minor flaws. Play time for me was around 15 hours or so plus another couple of hours for finding the last few items that I had missed originally.

You are playing a journalist who investigates a series of murders that happened a few years back and were never solved. The majority of the game consists of searching through various locations for letters, notes and other clues that allow you to piece together the events that led to the murders and identify the killer. The game is fairly non-linear, most locations are available right from the start although there are quite a few rooms and a handful of areas that you first have to unlock (literally, i.e. you need to find a key/code).

You play as an investigative reporter with one simple objective: Solve a cold case file by determining who killed wealthy socialite philanthropist Vivian Roberts and provide a front page photo. Now remember, things look bad and it looks like you’re not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. ‘Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That’s just the way it is.”

~The Outlaw Josey Wales

Back in the days, Taito’s Gun Fight was one of the very first arcades I’ve ever seen (aside from some weird local stuff that is) and Atari’s OUTLAWAtari 2600. The idea of both games was pretty simple (well, those were simple times) – player moved his character up and down, while the goal of the game was to shoot the opponent, who was doing the same thing on the opposite side of the screen. There were some obstacles like cacti, trees and even moving wagon, but all in all, it was just that – two players (or one player and the computer) were moving their heroes up and down while trying to eventually shoot each other. The Gun Fight was the very first game to depict human-to-human combat (we’re talking seventies here), while having something like that at home in OUTLAW (the arcade version of OUTLAW was a completely different game) felt… well, it’s hard to describe, really. I mean, for modern kids it feels like video games were always around. Like sun above their heads, cereals in their breakfast bowls and annoying adults everywhere. But the thing is – there were times when such entertainment was fresh and new. And let’s just say that playing a game with a friend on your TV… it felt beyond awesome. Sure, gameplay was way too basic, but come on! We were trying to kill each other! On a freakin’ TV screen! And we were bloody cowboys! Even today, I consider OUTLAW as one of my brightest video game memories. Never had a chance to play Gun Fight long enough, but man, I can’t even count for how long I’ve played OUTLAW. But enough with nostalgia. Why am I even telling you all that? Well, there’s actually a reason for that. That’s right, kids, this old geezer ain’t babbling crap for nothing. The thing is – what we have here is a game that was heavily inspired by Gun Fight and OUTLAW. An open world one too. Because the guys from Ostrich Banditos decided that it’ll be a fun thing to combine both old and new school.

Westerado is most definitely a fun game, but it’s far from being perfect.

You live in the West with your mother and older brother. One day, a buffalo escapes from your family ranch. You decide to go after it to catch and bring it back, but at return, you see the ranch burning down, your mother dead and your brother as good as dead. He makes you swear for revenge after he asks you to put him out of his misery. With nowhere to stay, you meet up with your uncle.

And now you do whatever you want.
